They are strong in that they have bigger, faster, stronger, etc. players at every position than we have at any position. I don't care if UM's entire roster was playing with horse tranquilizers in their system, our game against them was impressive. /endrant

Not attacking, just pointing out that by providing no real suggestions (other than "Hey! Copy something this other band does!"), you aren't really providing any constructive criticism. Also, if you're going to bring OSU's marching band into this now (in addition to the Marching 110), please, just continue to talk loudly during halftime like most of the other yokels.
-
Agreed. Can we delete this thread so it will stop being revived every time someone has OU Marching 110 envy?
-
Don't bad-mouth the band if you have no idea what you're talking about (which is something you make very apparent). Not every band is willing to dance and do all that OU does to get a crowd. There's a certain tradition with marching bands and I don't Ohio's Pride should be shamed for attempting to preserve a more traditional approach. I enjoy aspects of both, but one is not better than the other. If anything, I think UA's band members need to be more disciplined and quit playing generic 'latino rock' shows. They have a great director in Galen Karriker.
-
I mostly love OU's band, but I think this is a bit stupid. The dancing affects the sound quality for this show, which they normally handle better. I know it doesn't matter, they made SI, etc. but this seems sloppy for what is normally the most entertaining marching band in the state. Also, since when did meme songs become the subject for so many marching band shows? Gangnam Style was one thing, but come on...

Quality > quantity if you're talking about an academic institution that values education. UA primarily values profits. That's why adjuncts teach most of the classes taken by students in their first two years. Big $$$ in exploiting adjuncts.

New look for Zips to debut at home opener?
zestycoyote replied to g-mann17's topic in Akron Zips Football
Sure, words change meaning over time, but this isn't really one of those cases. Dictionary.com has a definition for the word irregardless even though it's just a nonstandard way of saying 'regardless.' That's a more apt comparison. Saying things like irregardless and 'very' unique is something called a buffer phrase. People use them when speaking and writing in a formal fashion. The speaker / writer is usually anxious about what they're saying / writing and want to add some extra words as a buffer. A lot of the time, however, people use buffer phrases out of habit, even when they're comfortable speaking / writing. Regardless, this is a nerdy way of saying that it's a mistake that the athletic department wouldn't make if they had a copy editor (or a good copy editor, depending on the case). Thanks for indulging me. -
New look for Zips to debut at home opener?

English graduate student here. There are no degrees of being unique. 'Zips' is a unique nickname, not a very unique nickname. -
He's a baby though. He was whining when things didn't go his way against ND. That said, it won't matter against the Zips.

If we had to change our nickname

Joke: Skidmarks. Real: Rangers. Explanation: Rangers for the Metro Parks/Cuyahoga Valley National Park connection. -
I only ask this: keep UM under 70.

Doesn't really matter. No one can see the text but the players. What's the point? -

I want to see what it looks like in person. I was hoping for a more matte look, which is hard to pull off with a gold base color. The zipper is kind of cool, though it doesn't look like a zipper immediately. The 'Zzzip Go the Zippers' text is incredibly stupid though. -
Not to mention they 'prefer' people with master's degrees for these 'encourager' positions. As someone working on a master's now, $8 per hour for an advanced degree is incredibly insulting, especially for a place of supposed higher learning. I could literally roll burritos at Chipotle for more than $8 per hour and receive enough hours to get health insurance. UA conveniently caps this position at 25 hours per week, just few enough so they can withhold benefits.

Game #2- James Madison Dukes @ Akron Zips
zestycoyote replied to LZIp's topic in Akron Zips Football
James Madison handled a bad Central Connecticut State team, but not as well as they should have if they expect to win against a FBS school, even if it is a questionably talented team like Akron. Birdsong's 10/18 passing performance won't get it done against Akron. The running game won't have as much production against a bigger defensive line. I think UA will keep the scoring down, but it'll be interesting to see how Pohl and the running backs work against JM compared to UCF. -
I think virtually no shot is about right. How many Butlers or equivalent do you see in the championship game over the past 20 years? 2013 - Louisville def. Michigan 2012 - Kentucky def. Kansas 2011 - Connecticut def. Butler 2010 - Duke def. Butler 2009 - North Carolina def. Michigan State 2008 - Kansas def. Memphis 2007 - Florida def. Ohio State 2006 - Florida def. UCLA 2005 - North Carolina def. Illinois 2004 - Connecticut def. Georgia Tech 2003 - Syracuse def. Kansas 2002 - Maryland def. Indiana 2001 - Duke def. Arizona 2000 - Michigan State def. Florida 1999 - Connecticut def. Duke 1998 - Kentucky def. Utah 1997 - Arizona def. Kentucky 1996 - Kentucky def. Syracuse 1995 - UCLA def. Arkansas 1994 - Arkansas def. Duke 1993 - North Carolina def Michigan 1992 - Duke def. Michigan

Back The Zips - New Basketball Marketing Theme
zestycoyote replied to Staton14's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Sometimes it helps to keep it simple. All MBB needs is to pack the JAR every time they play. An awesome home court advantage leads to a better team. A better team leads to bigger, nationally-recognized games/wins. National recognition leads to public support for a new arena. ^This might be a series of slightly-too-big leaps, but it's essentially the big picture plan. -
You have to look beyond the blowout headline. Did you honestly expect the Zips to compete in the UCF game? They lost 56-14 last year with similar talent, while UCF has as good or better this year. Blake Bortles is an experienced QB that will be playing NFL football in some capacity in a year or two. Overall, we allowed fewer points this season to a more experienced offense and were about as inept against their defense (325 yards with 4 turnovers in 2012, 250 yards with 2 turnovers in 2013). Add in the fact that the team had to travel to fairly hostile environment (heat and 35,115 fans) and I would say they fulfilled expectations. The Zips got pressure with their defensive line, something that will translate to MAC play. They didn't commit a million turnovers, so that on its own is an improvement. I think it is reasonable to expect 3-4 wins this season.

Kincade on Graduating Early

We don't need Tressel as president to get us money from the government. He can do that in his current position. Proenza raised money and rebuilt UA from the ground up. An infrastructure upgrade was necessary to make UA look like a university. Now UA needs an academic to focus on education so it can act like one. Different thinking about university leadership has already happened. That's why there are MBAs cutting staff and paying professional educators less than Chipotle pays burrito rollers. Different thinking never equals better education—just more profit. In case everyone has forgotten, the point of a university isn't to turn a profit—it is to educate. Tax payers can whine and whine and whine about funding higher education, but just remember: an uneducated society isn't worth anything.
-
If you're bringing in Canadian universities, perhaps you should try getting a degree from one and then try to get a job in the United States. Standards are not as high and the degrees are not as respected worldwide. If you want the university to hire a MBA and turn UA into a full-on community college, fine. But hire the MBA, not the coach with a useless MA and less than a year of higher education experience. Tressel's performance so far is irrelevant—he doesn't have enough regardless to take on such a high profile position.
-
ABJ is obviously rooting for Tressel with that lede. I'm glad Tressel is blue collar and doesn't spit on custodians, but that still doesn't make him a qualified candidate. The professors quoted in the story must need more material for their tenure application. What an embarrassment...
-
Not shooting the messenger. The information can be from high-up sources or not, but the concept is still no good. The idea of UA hiring Tressel, a football coach with a MA in education, as the next president of our university is ludicrous. Anyone entertaining that idea is also ludicrous. /endrant

Enough said.

Facts, meaning unpublicized, secondhand comments from 'administrative personnel' at UA? OK.
