I'd imagine it was done because Milwee wasn't officially the OC yet. Bowden probably wanted everything ran by him in case he didn't agree/wanted to override the call. I've posted it on here in the past and was told by a friend who was on the team at the time. Not sure there would be any reason to make that up. I mean surely you guys don't think he was promoted to OC without any experience whatsoever.

The good ol' boys club mentality very well could be his down fall. Not that it really matters 4 years later, but people love to rave about that offense when Dalton was here. Nobody realizes that Milwee was calling the plays from the press box and Bowden just signaled them in from the sideline.

I totally forgot about Snodgrass myself. I am talking about Bryce Dixon and Freddie Simmons Jr. http://247sports.com/Player/Bryce-Dixon-75675 http://247sports.com/Player/Freddie-Simmons-41113

It was all a little odd. To be fair, Woody did look pretty bad when he played against OU the year before. There were a lot on here talking up Chapman as well.

I do think play calling could improve. I can't stand stand the slow developing counter that gets stopped for a no gain at best. I think playcalling was a partial result of the defense. As for the talent, when healthy, we had a top 3-4 QB in the MAC, two of the best WRs in the MAC, a potential all conference RB, and potentially our best OLine yet, all of which were 1st year starters. I'm not sure there is any debating any of the above. Chapman, as good as some think he may or may not be, won 2/3 games he started this season. I think its pretty unfair to realistically expect a converted WR to win any games for you. I think we can assume Kato was a better option. Would it have been wise to burn his redshirt to potentially only play 1 game? I think most would agree that would have been an incredibly short sighted move. I'm not sure if I'm really seeing where point #3 is coming from. We literally played QB roulette every week from Kent St on. Both backups had severe limitations. The offense was constantly trying to play catch up because there was no confidence in the defense to stop anybody. I don't understand why Milwee is getting so much criticism. The defense is the one who under performed when healthy. Nobody was complaining when we dropped 65 on Marshall. I think clock management is more of a Bowden issue. That is one of my biggest issues with him. 2 minute drills never look good. I never see Milwee calling timeouts and I doubt he has the authority to determine if the offense should take a few shots or just kneel it to end the half. My opinion is that the biggest issues this season were lack of depth and injuries. I'd take a look at the recruiting coordinator and S&C coach before anybody. Probably moreseo the S&C coach as injuries seemed excessive. I would like to see recruiting improve, but also think lack of depth is somewhat understandable considering the program was essentially starting from scratch when TB took over. I think recruiting is improving. There are more and more young players every year who are contributing. We lose almost all of the D backfield next season, but have players like Davis, Brown, and Featherstone who look poised to step in. Jest might have been our 2nd best DT and he was a true freshman. There are some talented, young 3 star WRs becoming eligible next season. Should have the QB of the future already on the team. Finally looks like we are getting some nice RBs coming in. Wouldn't be shocked to see one of them take Edwards' spot as Ball's (praying he gets the medical redshirt) reliever next season. As low as I am on Edwards, I still think he's much better than a Hakeem Lawrence. The program has had 4 different OL coaches in 4 years. 2 of them left for promotions. The current one may be the best yet. We lost a DB coach to Louisville who took some decent recruits with him if my memory hasn't failed me. Otis Mounds has done a fine job replacing him. There are negatives, but there are also positives. I'm as disappointed on the season as anybody. I think I am pretty critical and have been pretty critical. I'm just trying to keep a level head, be patient, and look at the big picture but I'm sure it'll be written up as making excuses. Patience doesn't last forever though and next year this staff needs to deliver.

Before I answer that, why do you think he doesn't deserve another season?

I don't think anybody is disagreeing with you.

Herman's resume blows Fleck's out of the water and its not even close. Not sure how credit can be given to the latter but not the former. That isn't a knock on Fleck as I've tooted his horn on this board well before most. Not sure how one can not be impressed with him unless they have a preconceived bias because of where he came from.

Years mixed up. Forgot about Fleck's 1-11 year (crazy that such a good coach had a 1-11 season right?). Good thing WMU stuck with him. Ianello only had two years and was stuck with JD's recruits. Should he have been given more time? What about Herman, he won with mostly upper classman that he didn't recruit. Does he not get credit? Texas thinks he deserves plenty.

Agree, but thats not what you said above. Agree. However, the pathetic history of the program needs to be taken into account when evaluating. We've been the joke of D-1 football the majority of the time we've been here. Decades of suck doesn't change in a year or two. I've said it before, but its conveniently ignored....Bowden's first recruiting class is just now graduating. This is the recruiting class when he had a month to scrap together everybody else's leftovers. He didn't have much to sell the year after either coming off the 3rd straight 1-11 season. Some call it an excuse, I call it reality. These were the upper classman on our team this year. App State was a more decorated program than Akron probably ever will be while they were still in FCS. Not exactly comparing apples to apples. Agree about top 3-4 in the MAC. If its not there next year, it is probably time to move on. Coaches definitely hold some of the blame, but the cards were stacked against them this year. No excuses next season with what is returning.

I'd personally take a look at the S&C coach before anybody. The large amount of injuries seemed to derailed the season more than any other factor. Not saying I don't have issues with Milwee. I have issues with everyone, but nobody was calling for his head when we dropped 65 on Marshall. Had a long post typed up but I deleted because its not worth the time. Go Zips.

He has trended up/has not regressed in every season before this one. You're right. Fire him. That way we can keep trying over and over, year after year and will finally strike lightning in a bottle before we die and have that 1 magical season that in reality is meaningless because nothing that will be won will mean crap to anybody on a national scale and then our coach will leave and then we will be back to square 1 again. Just look at Kent St. Look at WMU next season. We're all just wasting our time because we root for a program that plays meaningless football. Nobody will give a damn about WMU football next season. Our coaching blows but we've won a bowl game. Our recruiting sucks but we've set the record for most wins in school history. Hire Paul Winters right!! They guy who hasn't won more than 7 games in D2 since 2011!! You guys have it all figured out!
-
Who would you like to replace Bowden? Someone that gives us the same "floor" with a comparable salary (which is right at the bottom of the MAC)? Because you know, the school has no money. How about providing some substantial discussion rather than just bitching all the time? Down seasons happen and are allowed to happen. I can understand getting the pitchforks out if it becomes a trend. Its not like the program just came off of its most successful season in D1 history.
-
I mean..he did win a Heisman and shatter SEC records. It wasn't all Mike Evans.
-
Down goes Houston, even though they weren't near the threat that Boise St is. Boise currently tied with Air Force on CBSSports Network. Of course none of it matters if WMU doesn't take care of business at 5.
-
smh. Its darn near 2017. How is there not some form of livestream for every D1 football/basketball game.
-
That is awesome! Has an offer to Baylor per that article. I'm sure he's picked up others as well since August.

Not good when players are publicly showing displeasure to what can only be assumed the coaching staff. As I said in the game thread, Woody was dressed last night. I've also noticed other players "liking" critical tweets of the program on twitter as well. It truly may be next year or bust for Coach Bowden. Hopefully he can rally the troops and win some games.

It might have improved some over the past several years as the University has gone away from open admission, but aren't our graduation rates pretty horrible/transfer rates pretty high? IF (big if) this Freshman class is of better quality than the rest and sticks around/graduates, it should help lessen the blow.
