Big East Quarterfinal @ Xavier, 11-4-2023 7pm
TennZip replied to Reslife4Life's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
In the last 7 games, the zips have scored 10 goals in the 2nd half and 1 goal in the first half. Totally agree with zippy-claws that an early goal.......would be huge for the zips. I think it was 2 games ago...that both Josh Hallenberger and Ashton Kamdem had great shot opportunities and they both passed the ball inside to Shooky. Shooky has been phenomenal this year but other zips have great scoring ability as well. I think that 72 Roo pointed out in a post that Ashton Kamdem has a super strong left footed shot. As we've seen this year, Shooky is great at creating his own shot and scoring. Shooky can also be a very good scorer on rebounds. I hope to see some zips taking strong shots and Shooky scoring at least 1 goal when the keeper can't control a strong zips shot. Let's go, Zips !!!! Looking forward to seeing a 10th win on Saturday the 4th. -
This is what the quarterfinals matchups look like....(when Sunday morning RPI's and records are included) Top Half of the Draw Georgetown vs. Seton Hall Georgetown is 6 in RPI overall record of 11-2-2 and 6-1-1 in leage Pirates are 63 in RPI Overall record of 8-5-3 and 3-4-1 in league St. John's vs. UConn Johnnies are 52 in RPI overall record of 8-3-5 and 3-1-4 in league UConn is 65 in RPI overall record of 8-7-1 and 4-4 in league Bottom Half of Draw Providence vs. Creighton Providence is 56 in RPI overall record of 7-5-3 and 4-2-2 in league Creighton is 99 in RPI ovcerall record of 4-6-6 and 3-3-2 in league Xavier vs. Akron Xavier is 62 in RPI overall record of 7-3-5 and 4-1-3 in league Akron is currently 35 in RPI overall record of 9-1-7 and 2-1-5 in league Akron was 27 in RPI before they tied a Butler team that had only won 2 games all year. Akron dropped 8 spots in RPI with a tie against #113 in RPI (Butler) If Akron loses in regulation or overtime at Xavier, I agree that they would probably drop to the mid 40's in RPI (Akron record would be 9-2-7) If the loss were to occur on PK's, Akron record would be 9-1-8...and the RPI drop would probably not be as steep as a straight out loss I view the game at Xavier as a must win for the Zips. If they lose in 90 minutes at Xavier, I do believe that the zips season is over. Georgetown is the only Big East team......that is certain of a spot in the NCAA tournament....even if they don't win the Big East tournament. The Big East is probably hoping for a Georgetown vs Akron final....as they are the 2 highest RPI teams. A Georgetown vs. Akron final would probably guarantee that the Big East would have 2 teams playing in the NCAA tournament. Practice your PK's this week, Zips. I have a feeling that PK's are in the future for the Zips in the Big East tournament.

https://gozips.com/news/2023/10/27/mens-soccer-big-east-championship-seeding-on-the-line-as-no-10-akron-battles-butler lots of info in press release....that I normally don't see....rankings for shots per game, corner kicks per game, shots on goal per contest, etal..... FINAL SEEDING ON THE LINE FOR BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP With the final weekend of BIG EAST Conference regular season action on tap on Saturday, Oct. 28, the stage has been set for a tightly contested battle to determine the final seeding for the upcoming BIG EAST Championship, Nov. 4-12. On the strength of a 2-1-4 league mark, Akron has claimed a berth in the tournament. With a victory at Butler on Saturday (Oct. 28), the Zips will be seeded No. 2, 5, 6 or 7 depending on the outcomes of the other five league contests. An Akron victory coupled with a Xavier loss at UConn and a Creighton setback or draw at St. John's will give the Zips the No. 2 tournament seed and an outright Midwest Divisional title. Akron can also share the divisional title and be the No. 6 seed with a win and a Xavier draw and Creighton loss, while a win coupled with a Xavier draw and Creighton victory will secure the No. 7 seed for the Zips and a divisional crown. A triumph by the Zips in other scenarios is expected to result in a No. 5 seed for Akron.

https://thethirdsub.ca/2023/10/23/report-card-decision-day-deadlock/ Very high game rating for former Zip Richie Laryea Richie Laryea: 8 There was a reason LAFC players kept dragging him down in dangerous areas, threatened by his quick feet and growing link-up play with his midfield partners. The flanks were always going to be important in this and Laryea shone bright, particularly in the second half. This was perhaps his best match as a Caps player and he is kicking on at just the right time.

I have looked very hard for the past 2 days......to find the press conference that occurred after the Marquette game. I have been unsuccessful in finding the Marquette press conference. The Beacon Journal has not been good this year in sending reporters to cover Akron U. Mens soccer games. Therefore, zips fans are forced to search for the press conferences on you tube. Normally, if a soccer game was played on Tuesday night, either Blue and Gold....or myself will find the press conference on the regular you tube web site (nomally found there around 2:00 or 3;00 on wednesday afternoon). As soon as Blue and Gold or myself or another zip fan finds the previous night's press conference on regular you tube, the zips nation soccer fan posts on this web site for other zip soccer fans so they can listen to comments from Coach Embick and 2 players. Normally, 5 to 6 days after the game has been played, someone in the Zips athletic department (I would assume that it is sports information director Sean Palchick) finally gets around to posting the press conference on the Zips Athletic page you tube channel. I am going to vent here. Zips soccer fans deserve much, much better. Zips soccer fans should not have to wait until 3 pm the next day for a zip soccer fan to find the press conference on regular You tube and then have that same zip soccer fan post on this site. Zip soccer fans sure as heck should not have to wait 5 to 6 days for the press conference to be posted on the zips You Tube channel. Thank you to Blue&Gold and other fans...that have posted press conferences on this web site. Let's compare the very poor performance.....by the Akron Mens soccer sports information director to what Creighton SID did last Wednesday night. Akron played at Creighton last Wednesday night from 7 pm eastern time to 9 pm eastern time. At 11:30 eastern time, I found this tweet from Creighton mens's soccer. It included a recap of the game, a 8.5 minute highlight video and the 6 minute press conference. All included in 1 tweet. Creighton Men's soccer fans are getting great timely information. Akron soccer fans are getting almost no information ....on a timely basis from our SID. Charles Guthrie, Markus Jennings, if you are reading this.....This one Akron Mens soccer fan says ....We deserve much better, more timely information.

this is all I could find....on big east conference tiebreakers it is dated 2016..... https://www.bigeast.com/news/2016/11/3/MSOC_1103161823.aspx If Creighton and Akron finish atop the Midwest with 13 points, Creighton would win the Midwest division and get overall number 2 seed (if this 2016 document is still the be all and end all for tie-breakers) If Xavier ties UConn and both Akron and Creighton win, there would be a 3 way tie with 13 points. If I am reading, the last sentence correctly, Xavier beat Creighton 1-0 , Xavier and Akron tied, Creighton defeated Akron Xavier is 1-0-1 ; Creighton is 1-1, Akron is 0-1-1 Xavier wins tiebreaker and wins midwest division if anyone can find a more current tiebreaker rules, please post .....and analyze for the other soccer fans.......on ZNO Head-to-head results is the first tie breaker, then the record versus the team occupying the highest position in the standings. The third tie breaker is each team’s total conference wins. The conference has seven total tie-breaker procedures for head-to-head ties. When more than two teams tie, they form a mini-conference, where the team/teams with the best combined record versus the other teams gains the advantage.

in tonight's games, Providence 3 Butler 0 Providence now has 14 points Butler stays at 6 points of course, Akron and Marquette play to 1-1 tie Akron now has 10 points Marquette has 5 points now Current Standings with all teams ...having played 7 games East Division Georgetown 16 points Providence 14 points St. Johns 12 points UConn 12 points Seton Hall 7 points Villanova 5 points MidWest Division Xavier 12 points Akron 10 points Creighton 10 points Butler 6 points DePaul 5 points Marquette 5 points with one game left, Villanova, Butler , DePaul and Marquette ....can not reach 10 points..... so, the Zips will be one of the 8 teams playing in the Big East tournament Georgetown, Providence, St. Johns, UConn, Xavier, Akron and Creighton have locked 7 of the 8 big east tournament slots. Akron can still win the Midwest and get the tournament overall number 2 seed..... if the following happens 1) Akron wins at Butler 2) Xavier must lose at U Conn 3) Creighton muse either lose or tie at St. Johns all games on Saturday start at 2 pm eastern https://www.bigeast.com/calendar.aspx?path=msoc I believe that this article confirms that the winner of the 2nd division (even if they have lower point total....than teams in other division)...will get number 2 overall seed The winner in the midwest...will not be able to top the 16 points that Georgetown currently has. Providence could end up with 17 points...but they will not be the overall number 2 seed...if Georgetown ends up with 19 points https://www.bigeast.com/tournaments/?id=160 Following the conclusion of league play on Saturday, Oct. 28 the tournament field will be set with the squad with the highest overall conference points securing the No. 1 seed, along with the team in the opposite division with the highest conference point total locking up the No. 2 seed. The remaining six seeds, regardless of division, will be determined by conference points. Quarterfinal action will get underway on Saturday, Nov. 4, with the top four seeds hosting matches.

Chad Welker thought that it was an own goal (off Will Jackson) replay made it look like the short Marquette guy did not touch the ball

In the 2:00 and 3:30 games... DePaul 3 Seton Hall 1 DePaul now has 5 points Seton Hall stays at 7 points credit to DePaul. They started the league campaign with an 0-4-0 mark. Marquette currently has 4 points. Akron currently has 9 points. Zips can move into a first place tie in the Midwest division with a win tonight. And no, I have no idea......what the tiebreaker(s) is if the Zips and Xavier finish in a tie for the Midwest Division. The winner of the Midwest division will be the #2 seed in the Big East Conference tournament. Let's get a win tonight, Zips !!!

If Creighton loses or ties against UConn, the Zips (with a win tonight)could be in a tie with Xavier (at the top of the Midwest) with 12 points after today;s game Let's get 3 points tonight, zippers !!!

When I compare the current Thursday afternoon RPI.......to the end of last week RPI, here are the major changes...that I see..... Unfortunately, the Zips are one of 2 teams.....that have seen a fairly significant drop Akron was #12 in RPI....at the completion of all games.....as of Sunday night 10/15 After last night's loss to #117 Creighton (RPI at time of the game), Akron has dropped to #25 in RPI North Carolina was #14 in RPI as of 10/15 North Carolina has dropped to #21 in RPI (North Carolina tied William and Mary in their 1 completed game this week) New Hampshire was #15 in RPI as of 10/15......On Tuesday night, New Hampshire had to play Hofstra (Hofstra was #17 as of 10/15) New Hampshire won the Tuesday night matchup....and New Hampshire is currently #8 in RPI West Virginia was #9 in RPI as of 10/15 Last night, West Virginia defeated Marshall 5-2 (Marshall was 12-0-0 before last night) West Virginis is now #5 in RPI Stanford was #19 in RPI as of 10/15 Stanford was probably helped by Creighton's win over Akron Stanford had wins over Georgetown and Creighton on their first weekend of the season. Stanford shows as #15 in current RPI Stanford plays Oregon State tonight (Oregon State is currently #32 in RPI)....so Stanford could move up a little bit more if they get a high quality win tonight
