Most Beautiful Thing You Ever Saw?
RootforRoo44 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
very awesome picture vmd9!by the way, what font are you using? It's the custom akron font. You can try to get it from the athletics dept but most likely they won't let you have it (Many people have tried). Something about licenses, I don't even have the actual font anywhere, I had to get the letters from a logo sheet I got somewhere...it was a real PAIN but I think it turned out awesome! The closest font I have found is called "Impact" it's similar if you make it italic, but it doesn't have the sharp edges (if that makes sense).I was thinking about making a thread or a gallery that has all the Zips backgrounds and stuff I've made...would people be interested?and if I started a thread which section should I put it in?Who cares what thread you put it in, you should just start a thread for things like that. I'm sure others would have things to post as well. -

I sure hope this makes the front page tomorrow of the ABJ.

Thanks, i really think Du Hast would be perfect. It just sounds like something a marching band could do. I'm just worried that the fans might get too pumped and burn down our beautiful new stadium.

Not everybody.Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great HBCU bands out there... but it is a completely different style, and we will NEVER adopt that style here at Akron.2 things about HBCU bands, then Ill drop the subject.1: Keep in mind that they play for a much more homogeneous audience, thus playing music the audience likes is a bit less complicated.2: None of us band members are physically capable of producing the volume and endurance required for a HBCU gameday performance. Those bands draw from a pool of high schools that reinforce that style. From a young age those players are taught to be loud for a long time. And like it or not, those practices are against principles of music education in our region. Now, as far as song selection is concerned.... any suggestions? It is easy to pick apart what you don't like about our song selection... but nobody ever gives any actual suggestions of songs.Song Titles and Artists people. Because it would appear that we don't know what you mean when you say "pump up music"Also, as far as the "energy" level of our performance goes, we are not quite used to projecting our performance to an actual audience, also the acoustics of the stadium are severely different from those of the Rubber Bowl. So, if you want a better show, stay for our postgame performance, or show up at Guzzetta an hour before kickoff... or spring for better seats. But trust me when I say that we are really trying with the energy thing, its tricky.P.S. We are tweaking our run on for the next game (to generate more intensity) and the rest of our pregame performance will be slightly altered. After Saturday there will be quiz to see if you noticed what we changed.P.P.S. I just realized the absurdity of revamping our pregame mid-season because of fan feedback, you guys don't know how lucky you are.... (imagine OSU changing script Ohio because of one person's comment online)I dont see how it's so hard to learn new things, there are bands that do more than 1 thing a year. And hey, Believe it or not there are others on here not affiliated with UA's band that know a thing or two about college marching bands! Heck, some have been in others bands. BTW, i got a song for you... See, now i feel like breaking things and/or flipping cars over. I'm pumped up. See how easy that is? There are TONS of songs out there, find a good one.

Noted. We're doing a show to commemorate 50 years since the day the music died. American Pie will be performed right before the traditional America ending with all of the highschool bands playing too. It'll start slow just like the original (minus labout 5 verses) and then pick up from there.Well that makes it a bit more understandable. I just want ONE awesome loud/fast/pumpup song though.
-
Well let me "constructively criticize" the music selection i heard today from the bands practice. "American Pie" is not an energetic song. I seriously almost fell asleep sitting there listening. Why can't we play something more exciting and upbeat?
-
Well it must be the football gods because there is no way the real God is a fan of that mess that is Can't.

I've been in that band, you can't tell me Mr K hasn't told the brass to play softer so not it over power the woodwinds, because he has. This whole debate is ridiculous. I just stated it is my personal taste. I understand why the U doesn't do. But I'll explain it again, then maybe we can get back to productivity. Taking away the woodwinds means you are putting the melody they played and putting into a brass arrangement. Brass can play it louder. I've seen many good and great bands play side by side with OSU's, and OSU's almost always blows them away with sound production. Does that mean other band is not a good band, and that OSU's is so much better? No. They are just going up against a different band that can do things on a different scale. It's addition by subtraction. A 200 piece brass band is just going to be a lot louder than a 200 piece woodwind/brass band. Therefore a good, small, brass band can put out as much, and in some cases more volume than a mixed band.To address ziprowdy's comments. DCI isn't the only group that gets to pick from the cream of musicians. How many people go to OSU, Michigan, LSU, USC, Tennessee et al to be apart of their bands? There is no reason Akron cannot get this level of success. But they need to have something here that really draws in musicians. They are taking a step in the right direction, but they need to solve a few things. The entrance to pre-game really needs to be an attention getter. The energy comment is something that lots of people have noticed. It's something that has to be addressed with body language. I know the band was playing their hearts out, but when you're up top in the GA on the East side, it just doesn't come across. The sound production is another thing. Up close, the band sounds absolutely amazing. But when you're up top, or the band is facing the other stands, or endzones, the sound just disappears. It could be just an acoustic factor that the stadium brings, but it is a serious issue. I felt like I had to whisper to my friends during half time, or I would be talking over the band. But I was up top, in the East side.YOU should be the band director! I like your no excuses take on this whole thing. We need someone who doesn't just say "well this is alright" and instead makes it better because majority of us sure as hell know it could be.

I did see an ad on one of the video billboards off of 77. Had the Infocision Stadium-Summa Field logo on it with Indiana/Akron logos and said "saturday 3:30pm".caught my eye.

Is the GoZips.com store lame or what?
RootforRoo44 replied to RootforRoo44's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I honestly think the GoZips.com store is worse than before. No team shop at the game and still no real team shop online?! This is terrible. -
Funny story...I was down at Ohio University for the Can't/OU game in 2007 and I was sitting in that park area on the north side of the stadium with a megaphone just heckling any and all Can't fans(i was a big intoxicated). So this lady walks by with a few guys and she has a Jarvis jersey on. I yell at her "Eugene Jarvis SUCKS!" and she responds "Eugene Jarvis is my son!" So i came back with "well your son sucks!". And let's just say i almost had to run away from a mom because she started coming at me and i thought she was going to kill me.So it's no surprise that he's so tough because i know his mom sure is.

That is lot 34. The 20 ft. beer bong and beer relays were in that lot. The University should release a parking map that that can be read.35 foot beer bong now...it's being improved at this moment in my garage.

Why the hell would we play at "the house that losing built" when we have this brand new beautiful stadium to play at?Btw, i am a huge browns fan. I'm just depressed about Cleveland sports
-
It sure as hell aint for the fans. Btw, i'm not just all about OU. That style of band IS what football is about. The band isn't supposed to be putting on a boring concert. I could care less if you played Journey (who i hate) the whole night as long as it was energetic and not just crappy standing around and playing like i see every game. Cater to the fans and maybe you will have the tradition/equipment/supporrt of one of those 10 bands i mentioned because PEOPLE WILL DONATE MONEY!!!!

To be honest, i dont know where this "OSU's band is great" crap comes from. Ohio State's band doesn't even make my top 10 college bands list.Yes i'll even list it for you all.10) Michigan As much as i hate Michigan, they have a great fight song and do a great show.9) Stanford Always have great music selection8) Jackson State Most original band ever7) Florida A&M Love the monster size of the band, 2nd biggest in the world i think6) Texas A&M Another huge band, the largest military style marching band in the world. Talk about a band getting you pumped up5) Florida State Largest band in the world, great uniforms and tradition...i may be a little bias here as i have family in Tallahassee and FSU was right behind Akron in college choice4) Tennessee Been around since 1869, no wonder they have so much tradition3) Wisconsin Love the run on (and the hazing)2) USC Been to over 250 straight home and away games, they haven't missed a football game (home or away) in over 20 years!1) Ohio U If you've ever seen them in person, you'd know why i say they are #1. There is nothing better i could do to convince you other than tell you to see them live sometime.

This has been beaten to death before. The fact is, our band is not very loud, they are not entirely made up of people who truly want to be there, and basically they are not anywhere near the top half of bands in this country.BUT they are our band and we can only hope they eventually do get better.Let me say however, that you guys can at least try to play a bit louder though. Stop with the excuses and just do it. Also, we really could strive to be more like the 110 at OU because they are the real deal (i hate to admit it).

Is lot 34 the lot that i was in? I'm confused. I was in the lot at the corner of Grant and Carroll, the one right to the west of the computer science building.

Look at the picture from the Beacon. The ball popped out of his hand before his knee went down, and we lucked out that the he and the ball went out of bounds before the pylon or it would have been Bears ball. Not taking anything away from Rodgers, he is becoming a good athlete. But his pass decisioning still needs work. Almost threw a pick six because he didn't look at what was going on, he just made the fake and chucked to where the receiver should have been. They are trying to establish that Rodgers can indeed throw the ball. If they can do that, then they can run a "wild cat" style with Rodgers being in there. If it looks like they fear throwing the ball with him, then it takes away one the three factos he brings. They still need Jacq to manage the game.(only in NEO do we say the guy that went 3-6 and a combined 3-8 in two games should "be the starter" over the guy with 340 yards passing and 4 td's to 1 int)*edit* With all this said, Rodgers is too good of an athlete to not utilize him in some capacity. They need to find a way to have him and Jacq on the field at the same time.GENIUS! Play two QB's at the same time!! They wont know what hit them.

Wow, way to be a downer. FYI, it's not exactly a phenomenon unique to Akron. If a team goes up 41-0, people leave. It happens here, it happens in the majors, and *GASP* it even happens down in Columbus.I took pictures all game to prove it (took over 700 counting tailgating) and though it was a blowout, it was a pretty big rush to the exits for the east stands right when halftime hit. If you cant sit through an entire football game especially when it's the FIRST ONE at a new stadium then that's just lame. Not to mention it was an exciting game, who doesnt love when the home team throttles the visitor? I will agree with whoever said some people weren't very loud as well. However i'm not too worried there, as i think the people who come back for that second and third game will be more inclined to join in the cheering.

"Akron hosts Morgan State and will play a home game somewhere other than the Rubber Bowl for the first time since the program's inception in 1940"Weren't we playing football before 1940?Haha, yes i noticed this too. I have to think they meant "since the stadiums opening" or something.

no surprise, our own crowd didn't care too much about the game either considering 1/3 of them left by the middle of the third quarter.
