  1. He already spent a semester in Arizona...he participated in their spring practices. It sounds like he is done with school and football however.
  2. That set off loony flags early on. Superb?
  3. No doubt, and thankfully soccer has the potential to grow plenty still. It was a tough spot to make that call but I still think it was the correct one. And the Florida kid made the mistake of biting in the first place, otherwise it wouldn't have even come down to a close one like that. That's always been part of the allure of baseball for me as well. The difference in styles in umpiring for each guy can surely impact a game, but in the end there were hundreds of pitches in that game, any of of which could have swung (pun intended) the game into Florida's favor. Also, I always say that there are three things that win a baseball game more than anything else. Can't did two of the three in that game: 1) Have the biggest inning (Can't 2nd inning- 3 runs) 2) Make the least errors (Can't-1, Florida-2) 3) Walk the least amount of opposing batters (Can't-6, Florida-1) Nothing describes how Can't won that game more than that. The two errors and that second inning KILLED Florida (4 unearned runs).
  4. EXACTLY. It's not even comparable...and it's understandable, but I HATE it. I'm still hoping Can't gets drubbed in the next one.
  5. You never "overrule" the home plate umpire. The umpire correctly got help on the call and it was made correctly, especially in the situation. Also, Henrichs (third base ump) was the crew chief and is a highly-respected umpire that has spent years in professional and college baseball. Point being, he was not in any way away from the play, as he had the best angle of the play. It's more comparable to a basketball official getting help from the clock official at the scorers table on a questionable shot clock reset. And as far as the rule goes, there is no official rule on what is and is not a "checked swing". Most umpires go by the "breaking of the wrists" rule rather than the "bat crossing the plate" line of thinking. Of course while some do use it to supplement the call, it's basically just a judgement call. Oh by the way, here's a nice article about that umpire and how he battled back from some health issues. *EDIT*...didn't see your post Dr. Z. Well said.
  6. Well apparently I'm solely in the lead...wow. This won't last for long though.
  7. All I know is that it was wonderful watching Can't get beat up in that game Saturday. I absolutely loved it. There's nothing better than seeing your rival get all of the bandwagon fans jumping aboard and talking, and then tanking it big time on national television and losing them all in one fell swoop. The next game should be entertaining as well.
  8. Well aren't you all forgetting that the old Zip Strip is turning into a pretty awesome bar scene now as well? The way things are going, in the next few years you'll be able to build in either place and still get a pretty hoppin' area nearby. Btw, i'm all for building in place of the current baseball field or on the corner of spicer and exchange. The latter is especially great because it's right next to the highway and would be an amazing sight driving down route 8 to see the huge football stadium and snazzy new arena side by side.
  9. That's not really the point. The point is college baseball is far more prestigious than college soccer. Can't is miserable at drawing fans to anything so that's not really a fair example. College baseball just isn't that popular up here for some reason, but I can bet you that if the Zips were in Can't's position right now they would sure as hell draw 1,000+ a game next spring. Especially playing most games at Canal Park.
  10. Alex Loftin was recently signed by the Lake Erie Crushers and he made his debut today going 5 innings and allowing only one run. Not a bad start to his professional career. Meanwhile 23rd round pick Andrew Brown just reported to short-season Rockies affiliate the Tri-City Dust Devils at the start of the week. Their opener is tomorrow (6/15) night.
  11. Impossible to root for Can't at this point. Also, them winning a national title in baseball is no doubt more important and prestigious than us winning in soccer. Baseball is vastly more popular at the college level than soccer, and if you need proof, just head to the south/southeast/southwest in the spring and see for yourself...it's unbelievable. Let's go Arkansas!
  12. Regardless of where he's at, his name is mentioned so that's always good!
  13. The facebook thread on the Aeros' page was far and away for Caleb Porter...very disappointing. I'll still be going to get that sleazeball's bobblehead though.
  14. A close friend who is with the team tells me that Oldham is transferring... More info
  15. That'll do it. Andrew Brown is the only Akron player drafted. 5 Can't Staters go however.
  16. How do you always beat me to these things?! lol Do you have a program scanning the internet for "Zips" and "Akron"?
  17. Murphy and Starn have the chance to be something special. Starn went low in my personal opinion and Murphy can absolutely SMASH the ball.
  18. And Brown finally goes in the 23rd round (708th overall) to the Rockies.
  19. Here are the MAC players who have been selected so far: 3rd round (105th) by Rockies: Buffalo C Tom Murphy 6th round (199) by A's: Ohio U RHP Seith Streich 7th round (239) by Braves: Can't State LHP David Starn 15th round (488) by Phillies: CMU RHP Zach Cooper 19th round (607) by Yankees: CMU LHP Dietrich Enns 20th round (609) by Astros: Can't State LHP Michael Clark 21st round (662) by Rays: CMU RHP Jonathan Weaver 23rd round (708) by Rockies: UA RHP Andrew Brown 26th round (796) by Pirates: Can't State 2B Jimmy Rider 34th round (1,056th) by Rangers: Can't State C David Lyon 35th round (1,073) by Indians: Can't State SS Nick Hamilton (son of Tribe broadcaster Tom Hamilton) 40th round (1,215) by Padres: Toledo LHP Terrance Owens 40th round (1,234) by Tigers: CMU LHP Ryan Longstreth
  20. While no one expected anyone to go in the first two days (rounds 1-15), the waiting game is on for several Zips hurlers. I would be VERY surprised if none of them go today. As far as my picks for who has a shot: Andrew Brown - No-brainer here. He's got a lot of things going for him with a good head on his shoulders, a good pitcher's build, and some nasty stuff. Hopefully he goes early today. Alex Loftin - Who knows with Loftin. He's not particularly impressive at any one thing but he has the makings of an adequate reliever. He could go late. Scott Foster - Outside chance here. He probably wont go but after his outstanding senior season and the fact that he's a lefty with decent velocity, you can't entirely count him out. I'd be surprised if he was drafted but I wouldn't be "shocked". Anyone else have any thoughts? (btw, went a little more in-depth here: LINK)
  21. Of all sports, I think football has to be the most fairly officiated. More often than not they get things right. It's basketball that the officiating is most suspect.
  22. Even more frightening is that the "good" MAC refs could be gone this fall!
  23. Whoops...thanks DiG!
