I was listening to the Cleveland Browns radio show on 92.3 earlier in the week and the player interview was T.J. Carrie. Zip alum Ken Carmen asked Ohio U alum Carrie what stadium he liked the most in his travels in college and he lauded Akron as having some of the nicest facilities of any school he had visited while playing for OU. Rather than enjoy the moment, it just made me mad. UA has spent tons to get these model football facilities. The stadium is fantastic, the fieldhouse great, the dorms outstanding and the workout facilities top notch. We have the 15th highest paid coach in the State of Ohio. Northeast Ohio is a hotbed of talent located in a state that produces the 5th largest pool of college football talent in the country. Despite all of these elements for success, we hope every year that our dear Zips will get to .500 to be bowl eligible while we watch them dwell in the mediocrity in the middle or bottom of the MAC. We get the occasional tease with something like the Northwestern win, but in the end we watch the endless train of directional schools eat our proverbial lunch. The school has to make a choice. If you’re going to commit to playing FBS football, commit to doing it well, not settling for mediocrity. If not, go play in some obscure conference and stop this damn charade.

Seems like Massinburg has been playing at Buffalo since the 90's.

In warmups, Riak was hitting more long range shots than Cheese. Banks and Cheese are similar size, but Banks is more of a pure 2 guard with a decent shot while Cheese can play the point in a pinch and is more aggressive off of the dribble as a penetrator, but doesn't have the outside shot of Banks. I've seen them both for about 25 minutes, so I am pretty confident in my assessments! LOL.

What is it that you are looking for? I've seen the kid play 29 minutes.

To your original question, I think Jackson could be very good, but it is early. I think he'll be a defensive liability due to his size. Teams with big guards like Buffalo has had in the past will take advantage of him. I see him being able to push the ball like Antino, much better than say Duvivier or Noah and his shot seems as good as any of those.

Jackson makes Antino look like Bob Lanier he's so small. Looks like all of the same lame timeout contests are back with the exception of the nearly impossible Pizza Fire 3 point thing. I want to sneak into the back and puncture those hippity hop balls. I think they plan to stick with that Dizzy Sping game until someone falls and spills their brains on the JAR court.

The Zips head into the Wolstein Center this Saturday to face YSU. Per an article in the Youngstown Vindicator, YSU's "offseason that saw five players leave the team after Jarrod Calhoun’s side went 8-24 in his first season in charge... All of the players from previous head coach Jerry Slocum are gone to either graduation or transfers. Leading the charge is a pair of sophomores: forward Naz Bohannon and guard Garrett Covington." I suspect the Penguins will be more talented than Cedarville and give the Zips a little more of a test. Hopefully, the Zips can improve on the Cedarville performance.

Pleasantly surprised by Scott Walter. I had assumed he was going to be more of a practice player.

Some notes/observations from Game 1, primarily for those who could not attend. The new intro video is not great. Starters- Banks, Ivey, Riak, Jackson and Utomi. Lots of new support people. Looked like about 10 managers and 24 cheerleaders. The new scoreboard looks great. Cheese was the first sub into the game. He is not much of a shooter but was the most aggressive Zip with the ball. Jackson is very fast. He can push the ball, has a decent shot and works hard on defense. His size will be exploited by big guards. Banks looked good. Decent shot. Seems to still be finding his way. Deng has very good feet on defense, is a nice defensive presence in the middle and is reasonable on offense. Much better on offense than expected. Scott Walter played much more than expected. Very heady and works hard. Groce had Poke and Riak and Sayles and Riak on the floor together. Lucas Smith and Toles in street clothes. Kostelac was the 4th big man in. Cheese ran point with Jackson out of the game. Ugly first half. 31-29. 39 percent from field, 24% on 3 pointers. Zips never got in the bonus, a sign of how passive they were on defense. At times, the boxing out was awful. In one stretch in the second half, Cedarville got 5 offensive rebounds in one possession. All in all, a typical first game. Lots of work yet to do. Players still gelling.

Took a look at last year's stats for the Yellow Jackets and they return 6 of the top 7 scorers from last season, led by senior 6 foot guard Grant Zawadzki at 12.6 ppg. They were 13-14 overall and 8-14 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. They've had the same coach since 2008 and have been under .500 every season since 2013.

Just received an email that the ticket office phones are down. What awful news with the huge demand for tickets to the Cedarville game/scrimmage.

Good for Noah. He was one of the most mature freshmen I've ever seen. It doesn't bode well for UNLV that they're being taken to the wire by Division II Montana State-Billings.
