Games 4, 5 & 6- The Akron Basketball Classic
clarkwgriswold replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Alabama State opened with LSU and UNLV, losing 71-64 to the Tigers and 93-79 to the Rebels. They have a get well game against Virginia-Lynchburg tonight. Lamar is 1-2 having beaten Paul Quinn College (113-42) while losing to Texas A & M (97-71) and Sam Houston (85-72). They do not play again before coming to Akron. Nebraska-Omaha is 2-3 thus far with wins over Mid-America Christian (85-69) and Stetson (79-76) and losses to Minnesota (68-64), UNLV (80-79) and Southern Utah (79-73). They also do not play before coming to the JAR. -
Rivalry game week and we're talking about Jim Grobe and high school football teams. 🤔 I'm curious to see who PCCC trots out at QB. The Glenville walk on freshman is a hell of an athlete but doesn't look at all ready for the bright lights. Ulatowski was decent against the Zips last year but seems to be having issues this season, though those issues could be explained away in part by the fact that he's getting mauled every time he drops back.

Nice win for the Zips. -
Class of 2025 Offers & Commits

The Zips have cornered the Westerville recruiting market. -
Exactly. I can appreciate that with our recent history it may take a little time to start attracting talent equal to or better than the competition, but attention to detail and discipline shouldn't be an issue in the 3rd year of an HC's tenure. I'm not ready to start a "Joe's Next Endeavor" thread but when I see repeated instances of stuff like having 12 guys on the field I have to question what's going on behind the scenes.

Game 10 (Week 12) at NIU - 7pm EST (TV - CBSSN)

I agree Finley was playing under some pretty awful conditions and was given little help by his receivers. I just have to joke about it or I'd get really depressed by this team. -
Exactly. Seems like a great kid. I do wish him well.

I thought the 12 man defense was an interesting wrinkle. Unfortunately, the officials were not fond of it.

At 19 of 52 passing I would suggest that Finley is not even a single threat QB. -

They'll balance it out by 10 on offense before they're done. -
Nice to see Mike pick up with Marshall where he left off with the Zips!

I think the new offensive philosophy was brought into focus by an injured Evan Wilson on the bench in a boot during the Ohio Wesleyan. On more than one occasion I saw him up on his feet urging the team with his arm motions to get moving up the court after a defensive rebound!
-
I don't think they're playing faster than their abilities. I think they're just still adapting to a ton of new faces and a new offense. In simple terms, growing pains.

The Akron Basketball Classic comes to the JAR November November 22nd through the 24th. Nebraska-Omaha, Alabama State and Lamar are the other teams in the tournament. The Zips play Lamar on the 22nd (6:00 p.m.), Nebraska-Omaha on the 23rd (4:00 p.m.) and Alabama State on the 24th (3:00 p.m.). Here's some info on the Lamar Cardinals- https://www.beaumontenterprise.com/sports/lamar/article/lamar-men-s-basketball-team-starts-new-season-19893923.php Info on the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks- https://unomahanews.com/2024/11/06/uno-mens-basketball-season-preview-new-faces-same-spirit/ Info on the Alabama State Hornets- https://www.rockmnation.com/missouri-tigers-basketball/2024/10/8/24236000/non-con-preview-alabama-state-hornets-missouri-tigers-basketball

That's the best team the Zips will play in the regular season. Take their lumps, get back to it and move on.

Zips are getting 14.5 points on DraftKings!

It took them over 3 days to report on Guthrie moving on. They'll probably wait to just cut and paste the obit.
-
Gerry was not a great college head coach. He was a great guy in general. He was 43–53–3 at Akron. Sadly, that's pretty good in comparison to recent Akron football.
-
The donors are stalwarts like Wentz and Kaulig. Absent the AD making a deliberate attempt to run them off they were always going to be there. In fact, they could likely run an AD off quicker than an AD could run them off. We started Guthrie's tenure with good basketball, soccer, track and field, swimming and diving, rifle...and awful football, maybe the highest profile sport. None of that changed.
-
Agreed. I think: 1) this may be our strongest opponent of the season; and 2) he may be the key to the season.
-
PCCC is the only team in the nation to not lead a game this season.
-
No Enrique on the Mad Ants roster yesterday in Cleveland against the Charge.

I think Gray will be okay. He didn't turn the ball over a lot at Cornell. I suspect he's just been pressing. I predict he'll be a fan favorite by the end of the year.
