  1. The article on the poor smoking more is interesting, but for this discussion a bit misleading since it's taking the entire world into account. The whole thing is not very definitive, but the statement that 84 percent of smokers living in developing countries leads me to believe they aren't financing US sports stadiums. The lottery article is pointless, since that's not the discussion. At any rate, I don't see where sin taxes unfairly affect the poor. Again, if you have money to spend on these items, tough luck where it goes. I think sin taxes are more of a corporate-welfare issue anyway.
  2. I would say yes, based on it being a QB. A good QB can sure cover a lot of weaknesses. With McCray being official, hopefully momentum for the program keeps rolling.
  3. There are numerous studies that dispute this. Many would show that they drink less. But what's the difference? If you have money for beer and cigs, you have money to pay for a stadium. Tough luck.
  4. Lol. I really didn't know where to start. Diop was the third option on his HS team, so that was a solid lottery pick. Throw Luke Jackson in there too. The Eyenga one drove me nuts the most because DeJuan Blair was still on the board. He's been a nice role player for the Spurs, who always seem to find late round value.
  5. The NFL is a copycat league, like all leagues. But why not, if something works and your team is no good, why not try it. The west coast offense, zone blitz schemes, now the spread... these all started small then went across the league. Heck, even the run-and-shoot was popular for a while, and that was a complete mess. Teams get into trouble when they don't just stick to something though. The Browns may be the best example of that.
  6. I think the vast majority of Zips fans are hoping like hell that he gets drafted. We all want to continue to follow his career. But the NBA draft is just so maddening. Every year fans watch and scratch their heads over picks. We hear more about "upside" than we do actual production on the court. To me "upside" means, "this guy can't play basketball, but maybe someone can teach him." I'm still trying to recover from the Cavs drafting Christian Eyenga.
  7. Mike & Mike talked a good bit this morning about the Heat and how they have no one to match up with Roy Hibbert. So even if the Heat advance, they'll be addressing this issue in the offseason. As Hibbert is obviously getting a lot of attention and most leagues tend to be copycat, perhaps big men will get more attention in the coming draft. So hopefully this link works, but it's a comparison of Roy and Zeke's senior seasons. I'd say Zeke matches up very well. Roy / Zeke
  8. Well, I think if the next Dan Marino comes along and for some reason he wants to play for the Zips, I'd say let's take him. Now maybe I'm crazy, but I think he could win a few games in the MAC. Ok, sarcasm aside... 4th Quarter Comebacks
  9. I guess I would need some examples of great players who haven't come up big in the 4th quarter. I'd say our failings in the past few years in the 4th quarter are more the result of having DIII talent on the roster (thanks to coach Rob) that have simply wore down by that point in the game.
  10. I think the key is that every defense - and offense, special teams - needs one or two difference makers. You need that elite level talent to come up with big plays that most players can't make. I'm not sure if this is "clutch" as much as it is superior ability. In the case of Pittsburgh, when guys like Troy and James Harrison were fully healthy, they competed for and won Super Bowls. With them less than 100%, they struggle. I'd say this is true of any defense. Do the Zips have difference makers yet? Fingers crossed...
  11. He planned on going to Bowling Green, but was arrested this past weekend so they passed on him. He's from South Bend so I'd see him landing closer to home than Akron, but who knows with this knucklehead. He was never going to play at OSU so he's smart to transfer, but stupid to mess up the shot he had at BGSU. I hope he doesn't land at Toledo.
  12. Ok, CJ is from Canton, but this is an interesting interview. Akron was recruiting him and Zeke? Man, one more scholarship and we might have had both? Q+A: CJ McCollum
  13. Nice! I'm liking that idea - Damian Lillard is scary good so that's a team on the rise for sure.
  14. I just mean that given their history, I'm not confident they'll make the right decision. I could see Dalton doing well in camp and them cutting him anyway. But hey, got my fingers crossed for him. Would be great for recruiting to have a QB on an NFL roster.
  15. Nice summaries. With a senior laden roster, this coming season is big. There's certainly a chance that both the men and women could win conference titles. Would be great to see both in the NCAA tourney.
  16. A classy move by Central Michigan.... Central Michigan pledges to honor scholarship of recruit with leukemia
  17. I think that's what will be so tough about this team - most teams want a sixth man to help energize them, but Keith can trot out so many lineup combinations, it almost doesn't matter for him. Akron will run at least 10 deep again, and regardless of who the starting 5 are, many are going to get good minutes. Kind of like last year - someone is going to get hot but the other team has no idea who, so how do you gameplan for it?
  18. A little while back Blue & Gold wrote this about Jackson: "IMO Aaron Jackson also has to mature - mentally; I saw him play a few times this year & he's awfully cocky -nothing really wrong with that- but he also seems to take a lot of plays off. KD's gonna have to go all Drill Sergeant on AJ this first year" Someone sign that guy as a scout!
  19. You were trying to support the argument of who would win by the comment of one random fan. That's absurd.
  20. Good news for the Zipes. If Evans meets expectations, it looks like another huge season is in store.
  21. Well, I'm not sure about that argument. A random fan being "terrified" is meaningless. Look, we can talk about it all we want, but OSU is trying to crack "blue blood" territory, and we're trying to win our first tournament game. It's a pointless comparison. It's like saying we're better than Kentucky since they didn't make the tournament last year.
  22. Wow, epic post GameChngr44. I'm still holding out hope that Zeke lands with the Cavs, but who knows. To me it seems logical - they're interested in Oden so they obviously want a big man. Fan support would be there since he's from a local school. It's a young team he would have time to develop with. I'm not a Mike Brown fan, but he's defense first, and Zeke has a talent for blocking shots you can't teach. Unless they trade, they have plenty of picks, so why not give him a shot. I believe Ilgauskas has helped Tristan, so who better to work with Zeke than "Z". But I'm used to the Cavs letting me down so I'm not holding my breath.
  23. Look, I love the Zips, but beating OSU last year? Um, take VCU's guards, make them more athletic and aggressive on defense, and you have Aaron Craft and Shannon Scott. Alex would have struggled, and everyone else would have been decimated. Again, I love the Zips, but we had a pretty good team the year before, and lost to Northwestern. Still a lot of growing to do.
  24. Maybe I'll be in the minority here, but I don't like this kind of talk at all. If you want to say those are your goals, that's fine, but the program has been on quite a roll without this kid, so for him to say he's going to do it better is sort of insulting. Talk is cheap. Prove it on the court.
  25. This list is interesting to follow. They don't have Driskel yet though. Akron / 247
