  1. Good for him. Was a spark with the Zips last season.
  2. Was it 38-10 at the half?
  3. Obviously a lot of these folks were not around or have forgotten 2003-2005. Those were far better teams than this one. And, yes if there had been as many meaningless bowls then as there are now Akron would have been to at least 1 if not 2 more. Frankly, the 2008 team that lost to UB in multiple OT's at the last game at the Bowl was better than this one. UB had a RB that went to the Packers in the draft... Unfortunately,Akron was playing with a QB who had an incurable substance abuse addiction which affected him and the rest of the team. Lets hope the Zips rise above their ineptness and finally do something unexpected!
  4. Let NO ONE personally attack ANYONE on this site. Its happened all too often in the past!
  5. Looked at the stats from the OU/Toledo game. OU had 532 total yards; 393 rushing yards with two Brown(142) and Rourke, the QB(115). Ouellette' supposedly their best back 'only' had 70. A potent running game with a running QB who only has to throw sparingly is not a recipe for a ZIPS win. But,this is as close as as these guys have been to actually realistically being able to win the division. Sometimes teams can play out of their minds for one game like this. Lets play it and see.
  6. I hope what looks inevitable doesn't happen. But..... I still go back to the stretch of seasons 2003-2005. Those teams were 7-5(Owens), 6-5(Brookhart), 7-6(Brookhart,MAC Champs and Motor City Bowl). Akron got screwed out of other bowls because there weren't as many available. Surely at least one of those teams with Frye should have gotten a bid.
  7. I didn't watch the entire game. But,the last time I looked in OU was up I think, 38-10 on the team many believed to be the best in the MAC. Surprising as hell.
  8. Like I said I hoped I had been wrong! Thanks anyway.
  9. Nelson can't be judged on what happened last night. That would be blaming him for the lack of discipline the coaching staff has allowed to occur over the last 5 years. Nelson might be OK if there was anyone on the Akron staff who could 'coach up' QB's. But,there is not. Bowden has not shown any ability to bring in top quality MAC Qb's or improve the ones he has has brought in to any great extent. I actually think that Nelson has some real potential with a staff that that is skilled at play calling and improving offensive players. We don't have that now! I am watching the OU- Toledo game. Next week is going to be ugly in MHO!
  10. Unfortunately close but no cigar.
  11. When you just look at the numbers and didn't know who was suspended and who got hurt you would expect the outcome you got. Akron: Total yards-273 Miami: 420 Rush: 55 on 30 atts(1.8) 176 on 34(Young-14-100) Pass:218 on 19/38/0 244 on 19/32/2 Plays: 68 66 Pen: 5-57 4-40 Again,no significant running game. The caveat is the Sands injury ,obviously. And, a sputtering offense, again, the Woodson suspension. Again,a defense that can't stop the run consistently. Some more 'scratch your head' play calling at times. Look,Miami is not very good, period. They played with a hobbled QB but, one who actually wanted to play. Their defense did just enough to win the game. Its a shame, again that what happened with the suspension and the injuries happened when they did. This wasn't the fault of Nelson who apparently had little if any prep time. And, its not just the fault of the Sands injury. This team still has a lot of holes on both sides of the ball which get more exposed when these things happen. Unfortunately, the Zips play a far,far better OU team next week than they faced on last night. Its still possible but next week will have to be the BEST game that these guys have played and the coaches have coached this season. Damn!
  12. Can't say I have been a big Woodson fan the last two seasons. Thought maybe it was because he was 'hurt'. Give the guy a break. But,the more we saw of his antics on the field and the way the team never really rallied around him it made you wonder. Boy,on the verge and this happens. Hope its not ANOTHER wait until whatever season, again!
  13. I wanna see how OU plays Toledo. In MHO OU is still the 'best' team in the East until Akron beats them. It will take an extraordinary effort by the DEFENSE this week and against OU to win the division. As I did with the Miami stats(take a look) I will glean out the OU stats later. The 'stats' point to a Miami win tonite. HOPE I AM WRONG!
  14. At this point 'bowl eligible' is frankly meaningless. Sorry, if they don't beat OU, finally, next week the season is a disappointment in MHO. Sorry, but when Bowden has it right in front of him I hope he gets it done. Can't let this slip away.!
  15. Southern Comfort worked well also.
  16. Teams passed with the O-line in the 3-point for decades. The 2-point became more popular with the advent of spread offenses. You don't have to run every time out of the 3. BUT,and this is a big 'but' so to speak, this is where your OC and HC have to be more creative than we have seen most of the time from Milwee and Bowden. Give the O-Line a chance. Personally I would like to see more real play action with Woodson under center. But,thats not gonna happen at this point with these two calling plays. At least give the O-Line some advantage when you want to run. They need to concentrate on the run more especially to give the D a blow.
  17. I'm gonna go back to something Detweiler said after the UB game. His observation was that when the coaches had the O-Line down in the 3-point stance (instead up in the 2-point) the running game with Sands carrying got better. He said the O-Line was getting a better initial surge into the D-Line than when they were standing up. I didn't really notice. But,if that was accurate you have to hope there was more emphasis on that in prep for the Miami game.
  18. My wife almost refused to go to the 2005 game with me. In fact I believe they were contemplating cancelling the game because it was so cold and it was snowing/blowing so much. We sat in the parking lot listening to Frenchy on the radio to see if they were gong to play. It was quite amazing. Just before the game started the snow began to back off and a bright sunshine eventually bathed the players and fans(sigh). Its almost as if the football gods decided that this game had to be played that day so that the Zips could beat KS.u and go to Detroit. That game had to happen! J.D. was later quoted as saying he knew we were going to win when KSSU fumbled and Akron ran it in for a TD. I don't know if the official temp was 14 above or 14 below. I know I have never been to a colder game. We sat in front of the press box to try to avoid some of the wind. Every 10 minutes or so my wife went to the restroom to get 'warm'. I keep thinking if that many people would show up for that game,a 'meaningful' game under those conditions, just imagine if the Zips could play meaningful games on a regular basis. They will never fill that place but if the perception of the program changed it could make a difference.
  19. Good catch. Not fast but is big body and can catch anything close. Tough match up. A little more pressure will help.

Statistically Miami would appear to have advantage. If Ragland plays healthy I think Miami has advantage at home. Would feel better if this game were at home.
  21. Watched the OU Miami game last night. OU in my humble opinion is the best team in the East. When Ragland plays for Miami they may be the second best team. Doesn't mean Akron can't beat both, but if Ragland plays he can run. Akron has trouble with running QB's,always has. Zips do not match up at all with OU's running game. Doesn't matter if OU loses to Toledo,if Akron beats Miami. Even if Akron beats Miami and OU loses to UT it still come down to the Akron-OU game. If Akron loses to OU both have 2 losses if I am not mistaken. But,OU would have the head to head tiebreaker. No reason to speculate now. Either they beat OU and KS.U or.... But at this point Bowden needs to get that offense focused.
