  1. This article article explains it pretty simply.
  2. He might. Specialists get called in at odd times, quite often. I would be surprised if he doesn't get a shot.
  3. Rumor is he won't be here until January.
  4. Rodney Coe signed as an undated free agent with the Cowboys: http://gozips.com/sports/fball/2016-17/releases/20160430ubesa5
  5. JB1 is going to make an excellent NFL player. Beyond his talent, he has a great work ethic and I can't recall a single selfish play made by him. Very happy for him.
  6. Last minute vote change...he goes 3rd...I won't be surprised, at all, if he goes 2nd.
  7. I am guessing if there are stadium banners they will be placed, optimally for TV camera.
  8. This is good news for all Group of 5 schools. A lot of Power 5 coaches came out in defense of Group of 5 coaches on this issue.
  9. SteelersWire shows that Brown was 1 of 2 LBs to visit the Steelers facilities and gave him nabbed as ab4th rounder for the Black & Gold. It indicates that the Steelers view personality fit as more important than combines or pro days and sees those events as, "icing on the cake" per Kevin Colbert, Steelers GM. Brown could do worse than the Pittsburgh Steelers. http://steelerswire.usatoday.com/2016/04/26/four-of-these-players-will-be-selected-by-the-steelers-during-the-nfl-draft/
  10. My guess is that the Motor City bowl banner was primarily about trying to draw more interest from players who played in that game. Bowden seems very interested in getting alumni players involved.
  11. It's so true. The second half of last season really brought about the culture change we were all waiting to see. I thought attendance was higher than last year, but this is a pretty subjective take. The concession stand was running out of food and water and I guessing it was because they forecasted based of historical attendance. I am really sorry some of you had to miss it for other commitments. It was actually pretty exciting to watch.
  12. Yes, Chapman really stood out, I thought. His passes were accurate, had a nice touch, and he didn't take off running much, at all (maybe 1-2 x?) Woodson has an energy when he runs the offense that stats don't capture, however. Also, Woodson was playing against our first team defense, which is never an easy task. It was, however, a pleasant surprise to see Chapman playing as well as he did. It really gave me a better feeling knowing that we have 2 guys who can competently run the offense. I was also pleased that none of the #3-5 QBs looked bad, either. IF your offense hangs around one kid, you are way too vulnerable. I was really nervous that Woodson would get hurt last year and we would go back to losing. The very surprising thing to me was the amount of depth we have across the offense. It was very surprising (and exciting) to see the offense in such good shape during a spring game This, to me, is a sure sign that the program really made progress over the last year. The kicking game was OK, but I still have reservations. No kicker will have the experience to kick FGs under pressure that Stein had and we used Zach Paul as an extension of our defense last year. If I remember correctly, in the bowl game his last punt pinned Utah state back under the 10 yard line. That's the type of thing that doesn't show up on paper. We rarely went for it on 4th down last year because Zach could be depended upon to place the ball where our defense could contain the opposition. The punter was not bad on Saturday, and there were no real similar situations, so we will have to wait and see. Hopefully, Zach gets a shot with an NFL team.
  13. Yes, I did mean Van Edwards, thanks. DJ Jones looked very good on Saturday as did Manny Morgan. They both looked very quick. They had little trouble with the few carries they received at picking up posit ve yardage. They were not necessarily game-breaking plays, but they hit the holes really fast. The whole offense just looks really fast and although the run game was not featured (It was a long time into the action before we saw a run), to me, the run game looked healthier than it has at either of the previous 2 spring games. The RBs run north-south and hit the holes fast. Hakeem Lawrence did not play on Saturday but was recognized in the awards, so I would assume he has had a good spring. Here are the stats: http://gozips.com/sports/fball/2016-17/files/Spring_Game_Stats_041616.pdf
  14. Your link did not work for me but this one did: http://www.cantonrep.com/article/20160418/SPORTS/160419289
  15. If he does materialize as a threat it will be the icing on the cake. I think we have some decent potential at RB with Means, Lawrence, and Jones so I am not really sweating the RB position. The pass game seems strong enough to really open the run up this year. Game highlights http://gozips.com/sports/fball/2016-17/releases/20160416p2ai1s
  16. Yup. On the spring game thread.
  17. The rings are really nice. They have a jeweled center with a blue "Z" in the center. On one side it has the player's name, the Zips 2015 record and said, "Best D1A record ever" with a helmet and the other side had the bowl game score and bowl game logo.
  18. Both QBS had ample time for the most part, although the second team allowed more pressure on Chapman. The other big change with Chapman was being able to stay in the pocket longer. He was able to be patient and find that second receiver. The panic seems to be gone. He has a very nice touch on his passes and once threw a catchable 45 yard pass off his back foot. He can throw the ball very well. I also thought Brian Homer and Caleb Chapman looked improved, as well.
  19. Don't be put off by this. The speed we have with receivers is a little unreal. Good for Bowden taking kids who want to run track, too. Lane just out muscles people. Natson seems to find creases very well. Some catches were fairly well defended. I think the receiving corps is just that good.
  20. The total turnaround in the receiver department is mind-blowing. We are very deep in this position. I hope we run a lot of plays where we line up a bunch of them. Lane was a beast, but few touches. Natson was as entertaining as I had hoped. Smith has potential. Means has potential. Even kids I had not heard of were making nice catches. It was great. Chapman played very well, like a different player, altogether. I have to believe Woodson is still the guy, but Chapman made some great plays and played with a lot of presence. I am very happy for him. He seemed to take his benching as well as a kid can and remain positive. Today was what I had hoped from him last year. He had a pass batted down and the second time he had a great pump fake and if I remember right, it led to a score. The defense was fairly solid but I was troubled with the amount of holding I saw in the secondary. Not much else stood out to me on that side of the ball, but Bell saw a lot of snaps with the first team. We have a lot of young talent at LB. Special teams were OK. They were not playing live returns. The punters were OK but we will not be able to use them as part of the D as we did with Zach Paul. I see us having to put up more points as a result. O'Leary wasn't bad kicking. I believe the new kicker/punter is a grey shirt and will join the team in Jan. Edit: the schedule posters had a picture of TB and it said Bowden Ball. I think it is clear that the fast paced, higher scoring offense is back. Not a lot of run game today, but what was shown looked fine.
  21. Insignificant because we were so often without a viable option due to Williams' injuries, unfortunately. I hope the tide turns for his health. He seems like a hard working, talented kid. I like having the TE as a second or third option when coverage is good. Ideally, we wouldn't have to use the TE, often, but it is very helpful to have one who the D cannot be ignored.
  22. Absolutely. I think these camps can be a real opportunity where kids have realization that Power 5 schools are not going to give them a look and that a G5 school will be a better option. They might have either the funds or means to get to Akron for a visit. College sports can be a way out of generational poverty for some kids and this seems like a very poorly conceived rule. Honestly, I think it's time to get some diversity into group of people who make these rules.
  23. I am very hopeful that Bennett can work out as a TE. Newman Williams played this well when he was healthy, but we need 2 viable options. When Newman was there there were plays for him because of the focus on Lane by the defense.
