Stat of the Game: We just lost to a team that shot 2 of 16 from 3-point range, including a whopping 0 for 5 from their "sharpshooter" Wil Sullivan.
-
I already said in the other thread that I felt like we didn't push the issue enough tonight. But there's a lot of other areas where fouls can occur, and still, it was a 34 to 13 FT advantage. The frustration from our bench obviously has boiled over.
-
Time to bump this back up again. I think Keith is going to get fined after tonight. The officiating problem seems to have finally gotten to him, and he openly talked about it in the postgame radio interview. We've only had TWO games all year where we got more FT attempts than our opponents. And, we've shot 116 fewer FTs. The play where Kwan doesn't get a foul call going to the basket, but Kretzer getting a foul on the rebound seemed particularly frustrating to him.
-
The turnovers were frustrating, but we clearly had some combinations of personnel on the floor at times that wouldn't have been there without the shortages. Sorry, but a technical from the bench with an 11 point lead in the 2nd half is just stupid. Strange night, and strange year. Too many bad breaks in one year.

So, we're in the Bonus with about 10 min. left in the half, and we spent the rest of the half shooting jumpers?
-
As someone else who would never root for Ken+, I guess I can make an exception when I KNOW that a Ken+ win benefits us.
-
Well, that's the problem, of course. They find sitting at home as a better option than going to their school's basketball game. But, there's plenty of schools that don't have to put on a Broadway Musical at halftime and during timeouts to draw fans, and many of them are not on a 10 year run of far more victories than defeats. You've pinpointed the problem. But I think it has a lot more to do with the culture of UA's students not taking enough pride in UA sports, rather than a lack of entertainment value in the basketball arena.

Hmm. That's interesting considering that there's a general thought out there that we aren't closing games. Maybe that deserves a closer look. Is it possible that we are just not closing out victories in which we have already expended resources to come back from behind?

I admire anyone who actually was THERE that day. I chickened out. And it always pisses me off that one of the greatest days in Akron D-1 football history was an unbearable day that very few people ever got to personally enjoy. Imagine how much fun that would have been to have a 50 degree day, and possibly have 20k+ enjoying tailgating, a blowout win against Ken+, an East Div. title, and our first trip to the MAC title game.

Car payment? I don't think any of us could get approved for a car payment at 18 yrs. old making $3 per hour. We bought junkers with cash. I'm willing to acknowledge that 2015 college is more expensive, even in today's dollars, than it was in 1980. But I think we are going way overboard with all of this "people didn't need to work jobs back then" or "kids can't afford cars like you guys did". Heck, I have to say that it sounds a little silly to be paying for Netflix and Xbox subscriptions, while not even caring if you have transportation. How do students visit family on long weekends and holidays these days? Prioritize!!!

Here's my big overall question mark for this year, and it's been discussed many times already. We lost a hefty Sr. class, so it would seem that there's some big holes to fill, plus D'Orazio. So, were these guys all good enough to keep the younger guys on the bench, or were we "saving" the young guys? I hope we were saving the young guys to some extent, even though I have my doubts that a coach would do that. If the Sr. class was just better, I think there's little chance that we have the ammo to surpass that 5-win plateau in 2015.

Watch it Balsy. I'm told that the 50s are the new 20s. Just for the record, I worked a lot when I was in school. And most people I know were doing the same thing.

Well, that explains the old "Akron University" shirt that I have. Thanks. I actually never remember if that was an old official name or not.
-
LOL...so true. Were we ever officially "Akron University" in the past before we became "The University of Akron"? I'm not even sure if any of that is official, and I don't see a name change on this list. I know that I personally still have an "AKRON UNIVERSITY" shirt from the early 80s.

Knowing that Marshall got to 11-0 last year, and we're barely an afterthought in the playoff rankings, I think we sadly know that there would never be a chance of ever getting into a football playoff under the current system that will always reward the biggest names with the largest fan bases.

You could be right. "Back in the Day" we packed 5 guys into a $500 a month house that was falling down. Maybe we were always looking for something to do. I've taken tours of some of those dorms and apartments. I don't know how a college students affords that style of living. Which also makes you seriously have to think......what is $5 worth to a college student who has $10,000 per semester in tuition and living expenses at today's U of A.

I think you've completely missed what's been pointed out. There were no massive marketing campaigns, bribes, points toward getting free merchandise....and God forbid.....flat out PAYING for students to attend. We went to basketball games because we wanted to go to basketball games. Nobody is attacking current students. I've posted here plenty of times simply trying to understand why they don't have a similar interest.

True. Why would we, with a 150 year history, even remotely entertain the idea of being a branch school of another Ohio state school? Unless, of course, some people at my alma mater really want to get the full effect of that TeamOhio concept.
-
Wright State? And you have the Suckeyes twice, so I think there's still one missing. I also fixed something in your post. See bold type above.
-
Actually, we're both wrong. Cincinnati is absolutely a State school. But, I mistakenly put Dayton on that list, and they are indeed private.
-
No kidding. For years, our HOME basketball uniforms have incorporated a small amount of Blue trim, but absolutely no Gold at all. It's unbelievable.
-
For a couple of you who have felt the need to flex your prognostication skills recently, Northern Iowa got beat badly by Wichita today. Just thought I'd point that out
-
It's actually interesting to look at this... BG, Youngstown, Cleveland all took the word STATE as part of their name. Akron, Toledo, Cincinnati, Dayton all did not. Then OSWho and OU did something else all together. The old Memphis State changed their name to University of Memphis about 10 years ago, so I guess name changes do happen.
-
It doesn't matter what we name it. If any of us win, we all share in the glory. #TeamOhio

I'll focus on a couple of local media-related items this morning. First of all, where was Willie Alvarez last night? Was he suspended or injured? He never played As if you think the ABJ is bad, you have to see what this PD article had to say this morning. http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2015/02/akron_ends_mac_basketball_losi.html#incart_river 1) We play at Buffalo on Tuesday and close the season at home against Miami on Friday?? Really?? 2) OU and Akron played in the MAC Tournament Final every year between 2009 and 2013?? It gets funnier all the time.
