That is hilarious.

I think you have to look at the possibility that they have put themselves in a position to be a TCU or Boise State, where a historic accomplishment vaults you into a state of notoriety for many, many years to come. It's not just a possible MAC title we're talking about here. It's potentially much bigger than that.

My thoughts remain the same. Everyone needs to ask themselves how much AKRON benefits and how much KEN+ benefits from Ken+ being in a major Bowl Game. Their benefit is infinitely greater. They could become the new media darling of lower tier teams from the midwest, if they haven't already. Does anyone really want to compete against that for years to come? I don't.

Thanks for the info., but I think most anyone would consider Chaminade's escalation from an NAIA school to a member of NCAA Div. II as a pretty significant different in how they stand compared to an NCAA D-1 school, and just how much more inferior they would have been 30 years ago. They've even quadrupled their enrollment since that time. If there was ever a true "It will never happen again" in sport, this would be it.

Thank you to Coach Porter

For me, the real defining moment for the program was the back-to-back shutout road wins at Wake Forest and North Carolina to start the 2010 season. It showed that we had some guts to go and challenge ourselves on the road, and leave no doubt that we were here to stay, and our 2009 run was no fluke. There's alot of coaches in alot of college sports that take the whimpy way out with their non-conference schedule. We didn't do that. To be the best, you have to beat the best. And as a coach, I have so much respect for him for taking that route to grow the program. -
It IS a sorry state of affairs, and very frustrating to those of us who have supported this program for years. I don't get it either. And let me correct your math. If 5% of 20,000 students show up, that puts us at 1,000 students per game, and I don't think 1,000 students have even shown up for any single Akron basketball game other than Ken+ since the 80s. As Slick Willy Clinton would say, "I feel your pain"

OSWho's 2002 Halftime "Celebration"

Great post. And let me add, we've played them in football 3 times in the last decade, so you could easily classify the football games as being more frequent than just "every now and then". You're right that we'd play them in basketball too, if only they'd schedule us. That's been that way for years. It's too much of a risk for them, so they avoid us. And don't forget about competing against them for media attention, students, and faculty, and scholastic achievement. The people in Cincinnati have it right. They wear shirts mocking OSWho showing "Buckeye State" incorporated into the UC logo. We should be more like them. -
If that's true, I'd love to see it happen. I just don't want it to be Ken+

OSWho's 2002 Halftime "Celebration"

Obviously, I agree with most of the responses. Just trying to see how many people are aware of this debacle, and how they feel about it. When I said "too soon", I meant too soon to bring back JT, not too soon to celebrate their anniversary. -
I'm curious about how my fellow participants on this board feel about this, since I've been talking about this with numerous people since yesterday, and have listened to various sportcasters, local and national, weigh in on this. Do you think the school would have thought twice if they knew the ex-players were going to parade JT around on their shoulders like that? Does the school even care what anyone thinks? Don't you think the right thing for him to do would have been to gratiously decline? At the very least, was it too soon? Is it yet another case of OSWho arrogance? Thumbing their noses at the people who sanctioned him and the University, as some sportscasters have suggested? How about the fans who cheered for him? I even read an on-line article comment this morning that said something like..."if it weren't for what Tressel did, we wouldn't have Urban Meyer right now. So, this all worked out great." Have we really reached such a low point in terms of integrity in college athletics? Does any integrity still exist at all, especially for the University down South that's only won one football title since the 60s, even though they spend more money per athlete than any other school trying to win championships? To me, the timing was very bizarre. And since I always tend to think about the student athletes first, I have to wonder how the hard-working kids on the field felt about watching a man being paraded around the field, knowing that he was the primary reason why their season was ending yesterday.

Bowling Green is small. Akron is a large city. There might be a reason for them to do it, in order to draw from a much larger alumni population in a big city. There would be no reason for us to do it, that I can see.
-
Agreed. Sunday afternoon? Unrecognizable team? Non-conference game? Only the diehards will be pumped for this one, and are the only ones that will remember the beating we took at their place last year. We still might hit 3k, but would have to hope for MTSU to be a perennial power before we could draw much more for a home game with them.
-
Emphasis on my use of the word WERE. They were an NAIA school back then who played at a local high school because of lack of facilities. They are far more capable now of being able to pull off an upset like that, relatively speaking. For today's comparison, think of Wilberforce (a small NAIA school down in SW Ohio) beating North Carolina. Enjoy the game. I'm sure it's great for you to see a former Zip playing out there.
-
Hey, at least we have it narrowed down to two options. That's pretty rare on here Remember, we accomplished pretty much the same feat in the 1960 Olympics too. But I can guarantee you that an NAIA school will never beat the #1 D-1 basketball team in the country ever again. So, I say if something is impossible to ever be duplicated, that should be the #1 sports miracle ever.
-
Well said. I LOVED the miracle on ice, and it has great importance to me personally. But, that hockey team still consisted of top-notch college hockey players. Those kids from Chaminade were nobodys.
-
I pretty much consider this the biggest SPORTS upset of all time.
-
If it hasn't been mentioned yet......................... The two bogus pass interference calls on us in the end zone on the same drive, followed by a horrible TD catch that wasn't overturned, is another infuriating chapter in the book of MAC officiating. They don't like Akron, and I don't know why.

predictions from top drawer soccer
skip-zip replied to TennZip's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
With as much respect as possible, I have to ask how someone "predicts" a soccer game? Most games, particularly at this time of the year, are probably going to boil down to one brief lapse by somebody that causes a goal to be scored. Whoever has that brief lapse is probably going to lose. -
Since we're updating everyone on former Zips players, here's another one that I don't think any of us have caught up with in quite some time. Alex averaged 4.6 ppg last year at NW Missouri State, and twice had 15 point games. This year he is going nuts. He's averaging 19 ppg, and has already had a 28 point game. As a former Cleveland PD Player of the Year, and multiple All-State selection in DI, I was happy to see him come to Akron, and wish he would have made it here. But, glad to see him doing well.
-
I wonder if they made this prediction before the season, or right now? I'd be somewhat surprised if any prognosticator wouild be generous enough to say that we are only going to have 4 losses over the last 25 games, but I'll take it !! Now you have to ask, where does 24 wins put us? Certainly not at At-Large status with a horrible loss already on our resume. But, it would be ineteresting to see if that's more than good enough now for an NIT bid, hoping that minds have changed since the 2007 debacle.
-
Even after things turned sour for us again this year, I still think it would be huge boost for the kids going into next year if they could pull this off, regardless of whether we see Toledo at anywhere close to full strength or not. On another note, I have had my concerns all season long about going into next year (2013) with a QB with no experience. I leaned against starting the Senior, and this is why. It's hard to make an argument that it's been a decision that's worked out for us.

Thanks. I found it. I just thought it was odd that GoZips.Com didn't have to the link to the audio or video.

Where are you watching? I see no link on GoZips.com

This makes me think about something. With Akron being the largest school in NE Ohio, we likely have more alums in NE Ohio than any other school. But, do we even have a Cleveland Alumni chapter? And do they have gatherings? You would think we would probably be the most likely school to have such a chapter.
