That was my thinking too. The locals should still be here on Tuesday evening. I wouldn't expect travelers coming into Akron to visit family on Wednesday night would rush here to get to a 7pm Akron football game.
-
By Wednesday afternoon, everyone is on the road. It's the busiest travel day of the year in this country. And the campus would be deserted by game time. There would be ZERO chance of getting any students to this game if it were on Wednesday. I don't want to argue over Tuesday vs. Wednesday, because neither will produce a blockbuster difference. But 7pm Wednesday would be a disaster.

A nationally-ranked Akron team, or a nationally-ranked opponent. And that's not Kent I actually agree with you that people are coming into town for the Holiday weekend, which would seem to add some potential fans. But an Akron football game is not going to be high on their agenda. And unfortunately, people are also leaving town for the Holiday weekend too.

WOW Breaking News. That's the kind of information that keeps Zips fans informed, up to the minute.

According to the link to the bracket, which I posted earlier, we beat Fresno State in the Semifinal.
-
We can't deny that. That's why I am hoping that the 50 degree (or better) forecast holds up.
-
You're right, Lee. It is the same situation. And truthfully, a Tuesday night should draw better than Thanksgiving DAY (when the blizzard bowl was played). I'll keep hoping. I expect more than the OU game. For those who think that 15k should be expected, they are going to be sorely disappointed. Under the best weather conditions, I will hold out hope that we can get somewhere close to 10k in the seats.

Duquesne Basketball Coach Keith Dambrot
skip-zip replied to Valpo Zip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
I think you've hit on something I preach about all the time. We shouldn't really want any program within our state or region to do well. On some level, it affects us. In some cases it might be in recruiting. In other instances, for the schools that are closer to us, it's in lack of media coverage. And that's all tough for me to say in this case. Because I know the situation with Keith, and I like him, and I would otherwise want him to set the world on fire at Duquesne, after making a move that he really was never wanting to make. -
Some of them didn't show up? I'd say probably 90% of them didn't use their tickets. I probably could have looked down at any point on Tuesday and counted, and I'd say there were more of us in the suites than there were in the stands. Sad.

Exactly my point. Read my post again, where I was referencing those who think the problem will be solved if we just win more games. Just winning more MAC football games is not what's going to make a significant difference. Unless there's a massive effort over the next 5 days to get the campus and community excited, I'm afraid that factors like people wanting to kick off their long weekend of partying, and decent weather, are going to make differences in the hundreds. Not in the thousands, like we need. We thank you for that. We can't get most of the people who live 7 MINUTES from the stadium to even think about going.
-
It shouldn't. Not when most of the people on this forum think that all we have to do is win more, and people will come. Unfortunately, winning the MAC East doesn't mean squat to anyone who doesn't already have at least a mild interest in Zips Athletics. I just hope everyone who can actually influence crowd size does whatever they can to get a few thousand more people in there who want to make some noise and give us a little bit of "atmosphere" for such an important game in our history.
-
That's a big rivalry game. Anything can happen. I just hope that common rule doesn't apply to us next week.
-
I never said we did. I said this one was awful.
-
That won't happen. But I think 10k might be attainable if the media and campus get involved. We need that buzz that this is a DIVISION TITLE clincher. The key words being "a few years back" It's actually been almost 5 years now, believe it or not.
-
I have looked at the OU QB's long touchdown run a few times. Gosh, that was a real defensive mistake. Two guys gambled at the same time to try to make a Tackle for Loss, both whiffed, and there was no help behind them. It's actually still hard for me to believe that OU rushed for 6.6 yards per carry in that game, and went to the pass as often as they did.
-
I'm sure they were probably correct, by the written rule. And they were reviewed and confirmed. But from the player's standpoint, it's hard to play. And the results are devastating to the team far beyond the penalty yards. I've seen some deliberate and dirty helmet hits, and I've seem some that appeared rather unavoidable because of the speed of the action. Yet, they are treated the same.
-
Geez Lee. Do you know how large of a debate you would ignite if you ask us all to throw out the records, and actually argue over which team appeared to be the best? I'm sure I was correcting someone who didn't know which season produced our best record. But since I've spent some time already talking about that 2005 team, they did indeed have NIU's number that year. Once at The Bowl, and the incredible comeback in Detroit. But remember, that team also lost 20-0 to Army...AT HOME. It was a wild year. And they needed a lot of help over that last month to get into that title game.
-
Very interesting. I didn't realize that each of the last 2 game mirrored the 2005 games. I can add this also: I know we didn't have a scenario where we just needed to win the last 2 games that year. Some other losses helped us over those last few weeks, and we were fortunate to find that the Kent game was going to get us into the championship game. For quite some time now, we've known that an OU win and Kent win would get us in. That should have allowed the campus and community to start building some excitement leading up to these two games. I sure hope that crossing over the OU hurdle will help. We've got 6 days to get a lot of people on board with the idea that we're going to Detroit for the first time in 12 years.

The schedule on our website says ESPNU/3 for next week. I hope it can change to ESPN2. But, our 2 previous games showed ESPN2 for awhile, so I always thought these were set in stone.
-
I would have said the score would have been about 45-7 It's unbelievable that we overcame that.
-
We did some stupid things. But when Penalty Yards are 167 to 19....something is wrong. The officials could have ensured that we lost that game. They seemed like they were trying. Before this game was played, how many people here would have said that we had any better than a 1% chance of winning this game if you were told what the penalty yardage was going to be?
-
Hey, 2005 was a wild year too. We had plenty of good and bad games. I think I'll try not to finish characterizing this team until they do what the 2005 did.....They FINISHED THE JOB when it mattered, by demolishing a bad Kent team
-
I already saw that. I guess it would have been nice if we could have wrapped up the MAC East Title on one of the "real" ESPN channels, in front of a true national viewing audience. But, I'd imagine that ESPN never could have foreseen the implications of this game when they selected the games, and their channels.

The picture of the Punt Block was pretty unbelievable. Nice work.

Don't be so sure about the "no blizzard". The forecast right now (luckily) is calling for a 50 degree day on Tuesday, but it will be sandwiched between cold and snow this Sunday, and cold and snow by Thanksgiving. Lets hope that timeline doesn't shift. But for right now, it looks like Tuesday will be the best day of the week.
