Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational
skip-zip replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Hmm. Maybe we just already played the Championship Game of this tournament. -
Exactly.

Sure. That's one of my questions too. I'm guessing in your scenario, since it's on the school's website, that the school is actually buying them back and reselling? Or, pocketing some of the revenue or a fee? If it's simply just an exchange between a ticket holder and another fan, doesn't the school stand to lose a lot of money from box office revenue if people are obtaining their tickets from a ticket pool of already-purchased tickets?
-
I've seen them do this at some of the biggest college basketball schools in the country. I've yet to have someone give an explanation for why we can't do it here. I'd love to have other fans come down and sit by me, especially if they are into the game. Instead, I look around at empty seats and/or people sitting in their seats the entire game. I don't know. Maybe they don't want to disturb the really old people who might want to nap during the games.

You're thinking that there has to be some way to connect people like your friends, with the hundreds of ticket that aren't used on at every game. You tech savvy people ought to find a way to come up with a page where companies and people can offer their tickets, and those seeking them can contact them. But, I doubt that the people who don't use their tickets would report it ahead of time. Yes, we certainly have services called "ticket brokers". But I wonder how many people like your friends are actually looking to BUY tickets?
-
Kreed, it's because everything points back to the same problem. People don't want to go to Akron sporting events. Clients and friends know I'm a big Zips fan. They offer me available tickets all the time. Sometimes I will take them when they tell me "we're not going to use them here...find someone who wants them". I've had times where I've had my own tickets and their tickets filling up my pockets. Sometimes a dozen or so of them. And I can't find anyone to use them either. I've even stood in the lobby of the arena and handed them to someone walking in the door, especially if it looks like a parents with their kids. Some people want to support the program. Some are buying them along with an advertising deal. There's a lot of reasons why people or companies might buy tickets and never use them. Remember, our students also have what amounts to free tickets for every game. They don't want to go. You have to make people want to go.

This isn't anything directed towards you at all. Maybe you do know some people who had this conflict. But, the list of potential excuses for why a crowd may have been disappointing for a particular Zips sporting event has really reached beyond what I could have ever imagined at this point.
-
I wonder how many people know this? It's definitely legitimate data for including the best of the mid-majors in the picture. That's why I have stated many times that I think it's damn near a crime that this system doesn't give a 13-0 team a chance to even compete for the title.

We're a Christmas gift, for sure. They ought to treat us like royalty. -

It doesn't seem like a team headed towards another possible 21+ win season would be picked to finish 6th in their league, and then would suddenly become garbage with the loss of one starter. These aren't like other games that might have been scheduled long in advance with a lot of unknowns. This particular tournament didn't even announce it's field until late June. We had a relatively good idea what we were going to be facing down there. -

Pretty amazing that we agreed to two tournaments like this. And made big road trips to do so (especially this upcoming one). I can't believe we're traveling 2,000 miles for this. This certainly became a garbage tournament. Who knows if we saw this coming. And now we run the risk of playing a tournament final against the awful home court team who will certainly be motivated. -
Now you'll just bring back another dead discussion instead. "What if we dropped down a division and just won the title every year"
-
What is more amazing? The catch? Or that there's no flag on the field for Pass Interference if he did not catch it?
-
Yes, I know how attendance is counted.
-
Yep, that's part of it too. I know companies that have blocks of seats, and only show up a handful of time a year. I thought it was interesting that the Beacon reported "huge crowd" of 3.500 in attendance. That writer will be flabbergasted when he see's the Kent crowd. Just by eyeballing the crowd, I thought it was pretty unimpressive.

Yes, Marshall did a good job of making that extra interior pass for easy baskets. It was a little frustrating to watch. I've also always been a little puzzled why our out-of-bounds plays from the baseline are always a lob to Big Dog. We did the same thing for several years with Zeke. A lot of people see this and wonder why. I was happy to see Noah scoring like that last night. I could see from the start of the season that he was looking to shoot the ball much more this year in the offensive sets. It makes me wonder how much his injury recovery last year limited his movement, which caused him to struggle to get open looks. He appears to have so much more ability to contribute points on the offensive end.

I think these guys have had some growth defensively. The tests over the last couple of weeks should help. Holding them well under their average would be a good accomplishment. Besides, I'm sure they've played plenty of teams who are not going to be nearly as defensively focused as we usually are.
-
Sorry Guys. I didn't know you were waiting for an answer. It was AKRON. And the guy guessed it right. I wish I could fine a video of it. But this was all I could find. http://wheeloffortuneclub.blogspot.com/2016/12/episode-aired-on-wednesday-december-14.html

Regardless of how I feel about Fleck, imagine how much it would turn the whole Playoff System validity upside down if WMU wins, and a team who was 14-0 playing in D-1A had no chance to even compete for the national title.

Build The Wall...Build The Wall...Build The Wall Lock Her Up..Lock Her (Oops, sorry. Elections are over)

At the time, Woodson was likely coming back soon, which is a discussion for an entirely different thread.

They've said that they changed play calls because he was in there, but changing your offense mid-season is pretty difficult. And I agree that he had difficulty throwing passes downfield, but boy did he ever throw one of the best long passes of the season to JoJo to win the game at Kent. And I will admit that I was screaming about his putrid play in the first half of that game. I'll say this again. I'll be pissed if we were saving a year of eligibility for Kato by not playing him those last 3 games. MAC East title on the line. Bowl bid on the line. This program needs wins and titles and bowl appearances much more than anything that can possibly be gained to holding out a guy for the future. Could this tell us that maybe he's simply not good enough to be that man right now?
-
And it was over a 7 footer. But I have to be fair here. They should never let that play stand when a guy throws out his elbow or forearm to clear the defender away from a chance to block the shot.
-
As we look back at the season, having backup like Chapman come in and deliver the wins against Miami and Kent should make us thankful. Is he the Next Coming? No Do we still see him as a potential full time starter? Definitely Not. I agree with all of that, but I'm still grateful that he had the ability to deliver a couple of wins for us when we needed him.
-
Exactly. Plus, how do you put a blanket on all of these local kids and imply that we "let them get away"? There's different circumstances with all of them, including that Nance went to play for a coach who coached his dad.
