I thought we were all told that he hadn't taken a snap at QB since high school. And his only passing experience at Akron in a game was taking the handoff on the reverse and throwing the TD pass to Woody in the bowl game last year. You're right. Unbelievable.

Did anyone watch Wheel of Fortune tonight? The final big-prize puzzle had "On The Map" as the clue. And the letters came up..... _ _ RON OH_O I couldn't believe it. My wife and I almost jumped off of the couch.

Yep, it does give you that "we've been down this road before" feeling, after so many Next Great QB's haven't materialized. If Kato doesn't become "the man", I'll be really pissed that we went to great lengths to save him when we desperately needed a QB the last few games of this season. I mean, we basically cost ourselves a bowl bid and a possible division title with that move. I hope it's worth it to have him for an extra year.

I'll say this much. Having two QB's ready to play, one that you 100% intend to redshirt, and a walk on who is essentially not able to contribute anything.......is not enough. But, if we're lucky enough that Woody and/or TC stay healthy next year, nobody will even be talking about this at all. Again...IF we're fortunate. My beef is that, about a year or two ago, we had about 7 QB's, didn't we? Somebody screwed up somewhere.

Hey, I remember that play. But I never saw the push-off. That shows it pretty clearly.

Again, nice job digging up the info. Kreed. I don't have time to go look at all of that, but I can see the difference in the two counties from your description. It fits with everything I've been told all along, that there is just no source of money to get this done. I guess we need to build more hotels But even with something like a bed tax (which primarily brings in revenue from people who live outside the area), would our county officials ever feel as if an Arena is worthy of that expense? Who knows. With what I know, here's how I am guessing this will all go down, in this order..... 1) JAR renovations 2) The University looking at the their own new arena about a decade or so down the road. 3) The city will look at building an arena. The only recent events that might swap items 2 and 3 is if this new mayor continues on his path of wanting to work more with the University. So, back to the subject at hand: An Akron vs. Gonzaga home game anytime soon would need the Cleveland arena. And we'll need a MAC Championship or better overall turnout to make that trip for one game if it ever has any potential of happening.

Nice job looking that up. I think we always get back to the same problem with this. Cuyahoga County wanting to pull this money for the benefit of the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Summit County wanting to pull this money for the benefit of the Zips, and other various events. They know that it's easy to convince people up there that the Cavs and their Arena is a huge revenue generator for the City. Unfortunately, we've already found out that this argument is not going to work here.

Who is your favorite "Marshall?"
skip-zip replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
OK, I'll get in on this. -
He owes him a lot more than that. I never would have guessed that LeBron would ever even think of coming back here and play for him again after that nonsense. Whenever people would talk about LeBron coming back again, my response was always, "When the team is sold to a new owner".

The other old guys here would certainly remember the 1987 game against Pitt when they were in the Top-5, which was played at the Richfield Coliseum. I don't remember the attendance numbers that day, but I recall the place being maybe 1/2 to 3/4 full? I would think a game like this in Cleveland might draw a similar crowd. I think it would HAVE to be that large, or there's no way that we'd even be able to lobby to put it in a venue that large. As long as Gonzaga would still be highly ranked at the time, it might work. The only other factors I can think of that may have additionally influenced that 1987 crowd was that Pitt fans were able to travel, and it was a homecoming for Akron St. V star Jerome Lane. Plus, we had just taken that same Pitt team to the wire at the old Fitzgerald Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh the year before. Edit: That Pitt team was #3 in the nation when they came here. I just verified that, but wish there was some way I could get the attendance for that game. I JUST FOUND IT.......Attendance 11,365 Fun Fact: The high scorer in that game was Sean Miller (yes, the current coach at Arizona)

In most of these cases, a guy is going to commit a foul like that, in that location on the floor, because he was frustrated from getting equally roughed up at the other end. It may have very well been justified. It often goes unnoticed, and is part of the normal action sometimes, but he got caught. It's also unknown to any of us just how hard he hit him, or how much of an acting job was done by the recipient. But if he had just hit him and gotten a personal foul, he's at 3 and the game goes on. The reaction that got him the Technical and his 4th foul had a far greater impact on the outcome of game, and that's what really needs to be questioned, with both the player and the officials.

I hope this happened a long time ago, and you're over it, because this is a pretty witty post that made me laugh.

You may be able to get tickets through Marshall in that corner section behind your team bench (I am assuming that is the Section L you are referencing). There are seats there for families and supporter of the visitors. But for the most part, Hilltopper's information about the lower section being sold out to season ticket holders before the start of the season is correct.

They weren't very successful at denying him the ball, but they could keep him from getting to the basket with one guy. Shooting over the top of a guy over 7' tall who could move well was a recipe for disaster for us. Then, without the double-team, it's 4-on-4 on the perimeter. That's how this Akron team gets held to 43 points, and we probably won't see a similar situation the rest of the year. But, you can combat that in two simple ways if a future opponent is successful at defending us that way again: 1) Have an effective scorer on the other post. 2) Dribble penetration from the Guards. I've said this before, but this team is a lot like the 07-08 team. Playing through a post scorer (J. Wood), and a bunch of other guys shooting 3's. We'll be a good scoring team when we can add the elements of #1 and/or #2 above, which the 07-08 team did not have.

Do you really think that the most avid of Zips Basketball fans are just going to stop talking about a new arena? Donors and Corporate Sponsors talk about it often as well. It's not just the typical fan. And it's not going to stop. But for the record, I have been the one on here who's talked often about the financial challenges of getting it done anytime soon, whether it be the City or the University as the primary payer. I'm well aware of the circumstances having been a party to discussions with many people in the categories listed above. I was just pointing out another of the benefits of having a large arena like they have in Ft. Wayne. I just wish it would sway someone to take the lead and act, sooner rather than later. By the way, I've estimated more like 10 years rather than 20. Lets hope.

Thanks for sharing. I got a lot more information out of that article, including this. The 2016 matchup with the Hoosiers will be the fourth game against a member of one of the Power Five conferences in Fort Wayne. The most recent was against Michigan State in 2008, when the Mastodons lost to the Spartans, 70-59. IPFW has also entertained Oregon State (2002) and Notre Dame (2005). Having a large arena in Ft. Wayne has landed them some other good home games over the years as well. I hope people at Akron see this.

I'd love to know more about how this Indiana vs. Fort Wayne game in Fort Wayne came about. But for what it's worth, I'd still gladly play the Suckeyes at a "neutral site" in Akron, and call them the "official home team", even if that meant that plenty of NE Ohio's Honks would also be there. But, I think that has to be Fort Wayne's arena, unless there's two big basketball arenas in Ft. Wayne, which seems very unlikely.

I said this earlier, but I believe that Antino missed the front end of that 1-and-1 not long after Ivey missed 2 out of 3 when he was fouled on the 3 pointer. The Gonzaga lead was still only 2-3 possessions at that point. But right after that, Gonzaga broke into that double-digit margin, and it was all over. These types of games always shift by a player or two making a play when it really matters. Yes, there were plenty of other factors that may have decided this game. But at that particular juncture, it was as simple as burying a few free throws, and we may have been able to take that game down closer to the wire.

Mivid. Your opinion is your opinion. Maybe you're right, Who knows. But, I have to inquire, just because it's such a definitive statement that offers nothing else. So, what is it that you see in the way Keith coaches this team that tells you that we are completely incapable of winning an NCAA tournament game?
-
Huh? If he lowered his shoulder into the guy, that's a personal foul. Not a technical. The technical came after the play.
-
And the one where Ivey pulled down a rebound, and their Big Lug clubbed him to the floor with a no-call might have been even worse.
-
Yep. Like I kept saying this week and last week, these games have all seemed to follow the same pattern for so long now. Game ended on a 19-3 run. All of these games seem to have that 5 min. period that blows the whole thing apart. The breakthrough might happen at some point. I'm still waiting and hoping.
-
And he missed 2 of the 3 FTs, and then Antino missed the front end of a 1-and-1 right after that. That was a killer !!
