Game 1- Arkansas State: Nov 4th @ 8pm EST
UAZippers replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Zips are making good drives and taking good shots for the most part. Just need to start making more of them. Too many missed 3s early. -
He said in the post game that he was trying to call a time out as the foul occurred. He just wanted the ball in the front court first.
-
He had 32 against OU last season
-
Zips starting to really struggle on offense again
-
ok Tavari!
-
Enrique and Ali both showed up to play. Everybody else doesn't seem to even know where they are right now.
-
Toledo is living up to their history so far. Only 24 points in the first half and down by 4. If Santiago/Sullinger would pass the ball, Kent would probably be up by a good amount more.
-
I think this is truly the first time all year that it looks like the Zips aren't even trying. A lot of standing around and watching. What is happening?

Its a new rule this season. The refs handled it completely correctly according to the rules. They are supposed to check it at the next media TO. Look at the 2nd bullet point at the bottom of this article: https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/ncaa-approves-change-to-determining-block-or-charge-calls-and-other-rule-modifications-for-upcoming-season/
-
These refs are unbelievable. Letting so many egregious fouls go, then calling the smallest touches. The terrible calls are going both ways at least.
-
he has 4 fouls
-
Zips really need to stop leaving good shooters open trying to sneak in and get backside steals. Kent was missing them early, but not so much anymore.

You still can't add transfers mid-season except for some pretty crazy exceptions (I can't think of any, but you never know), so I'm not sure what nil has to do with improving this team, this year. As you said, Groce has been very active in the portal, so again, I'm not sure why you think the Zips aren't doing their best to get the best players they can into the team. It just didn't line up right for us to get a top tier big this past off season, you can say that it was a problem, and I would have liked to see another post that as well, but I am happy with the additions we made instead.

I don't know, a lot of us on here are always complaining about the lack of attention that our program receives, so I refuse to hate on this kind of article. Yeah, it puts unneeded pressure/expectations on the team, but this is also the kind of thing that can draw out the "Joe Akrons" that claim they won't support the Zips because they aren't really relevant. Articles like this are what the "big programs" get all the time. Baby steps, but it seems like our program has made a bit of progress this season. Between the extra press I've seen the Zips get both from the ABJ/random national press on social media and getting selected for multiple games on ESPN2, there is a different feel in my opinion. Hopefully UA can build on this in terms of keeping momentum in getting better talent and increasing attendance.

If the Zips guards could consistently hit a decent percentage of wide open kick out 3s, this team would be so unstoppable.
-
yeah it is. Weird for a broadcasted game to have absolutely nothing on at halftime like this.
-
Trust me, I love Enrique as much as anybody else on here. 3 out of the 4 other Zips on the court have been putrid offensively and Freeman has still been fairly passive on offense this half. Payton has even been off the court for much more time than we could have possibly hoped. He needs to be willing to take on the double team and fight through it if we want to start scoring again. We can't continue to rely on step back threes from Ali being the only offense for minutes at a time. Zips had 31 points with 7 minutes remaining. They have 36 at the half with only 1 made shot in that time.
-
I was saying the same thing as the announcer was saying it. Zips offense has fallen apart (luckily the defense is still out of this world). Freeman needs to demand the ball and make something happen.
-
Zips are lucky that WMUs big man couldn't hit the broadside of the barn with his shot.
-
I find it quite hard to believe that there is an even slightly significant group of people that are willing to spend $7 but not $10 on a ticket. If you can't justify dropping a $10 bill, you probably aren't going if the tickets were free. Which gets back to the bigger problem, that there aren't enough fans that believe that a Zips basketball game is worth their time at any price. The struggle is increasing the value, not decreasing the cost.

All I can comment on this topic is that we were having this exact same conversation last season. X was graduating, Scott, Ali, and Thornton hadn't signed, and a lot of people thought this season would be a rebuilding year. I remember people commenting that Groce would maybe try to leave for a better job while he had the chance. Now people are commenting that this season is the great team that is going to fall off. Just goes to show that you never know what the future will bring.

I am loving the high-low post with Ali and Freeman. That can be an absolutely lethal combo.
-
Zips guards are just nowhere near the level they need to be right now. There is no threat on offense whatsoever.

From my understanding, the last few years, pretty much since Covid, the NCAA has been very lenient on giving out waivers for 2nd transfers. All you had to do was claim some kind of hardship and your waiver would be approved. Earlier this year, they announced that they were going to be a lot more strict, but only after many players transferred assuming they would get the waiver. It is the same issue that affected Aziz in Cincy and the Kent WR that transferred to UNC. I understand why it is annoying for people who are losing out, but I am happy that the rules seem to be more uniform once again and it doesn't feel like the NCAA is playing favorites.
