  1. Doesn't this send the message that perhaps mid-major football is not a marketable product in Akron and environs? As much as we might wish it were otherwise, it seems silly to continue throwing money at the problem. Don't raise the specter of Acme-Zip games, either - a "papered" crowd thanks to nearly free tickets from a once-dominant retailer is not proof of pent-up demand for a D1 football program.
  2. But if she would just put on a little makeup and change her hair, your buddies would be first in line to sleep with her too.
  3. I'm sure Title IX prevented the elimination of one more sport to reach 16. I wonder about the mention of scholarship reductions. Guessing football and soccer both will lose a handful of scholarships - football may more than a handful. Personnel cuts will impact marketing and communications, I would guess. Perhaps an associate AD or two as well.
  4. It's going to be interesting to see how a school like Miami handles this inevitable pruning process. I do not see how a mid-size school like Miami can continue to support FBS football, basketball AND varsity hockey. Something's gotta give. Lots of pain for all MAC programs as well as programs like Marshall et al.
  5. I suspect Kent would fight that. Perhaps Akron, CSU and YSU - three "urban" campuses.
  6. LeBron gave his name and not a dollar more. That's how he rolls.

  8. That's over a year old. I bet they have already settled.
  9. Frank Solich shares a portion of his salary with his top assistants.
  10. Terry Pluto is the kudzu of sports journalism. He's been "scribbling" the same crap to himself and readers for 30 years. Nothing new here - he's always been dismissive of MAC football, largely because local MAC football coaches don't cozy up to him. That's also why he never writes about OSU - they don't suck up to him as do the Browns and small-college coaches. Those interested in the future of higher ed in Ohio might want to take a look at the 1970s. There was a huge build-up of public universities and facilities in the 1960s to address the explosion of high school students who wanted to avoid Vietnam. This led to a bunch of non-college caliber students enrolling at KSU, Toledo, OU, BG, Ohio State, etc. That bubble burst with the Kent State shootings. Parents who previously had sent their kids off to school were afraid to do so after May 4, 1970. Enrollments at Kent, OU, BG and others plummeted from 1971-75. OU was projected to have an enrollment of 28K on the main campus by 1971 and nearly 30K by 1975. They built more than a dozen new dorms to meet that demand. In the spring of 1970, prior to Kent, there were nearly 20K on campus. That following fall, after the shootings and the forced closure of Ohio college campuses, only 13K showed up. Thousands of students ended up at Cleveland State, Tri-C, OSU, etc. so their parents could keep an eye on them at home. To avoid bankruptcy, OU had to give up one of its most successful regional campuses (now Shawnee State) and sell several buildings back to the state. The university eventually was able to stabilize enrollment and reacquire those buildings for a medical school. I expect the same to happen with COVID. The state will be forced to take a very hard look at the number of campuses and administrations. I predict a return to the "4 in the corners and one in the middle" vision that existed prior to Gov. Rhodes. That would be 1 main university cluster in each of the state's four corners plus the behemoth in Columbus. One or more of those four "corner" schools might become "The Ohio State University at _________."
  11. Rumor in MAC circles is that new Prez and Larry Williams have agreed to go their separate ways. Only question is when it will become official. Anyone else hear anything?
  12. Frankly, there's a very real chance the Zips will be 0-0 for the 2020 season, along with every other team.
  13. While that's true, they played as well as they could have in the first half and failed to get it done. The program is still thin. Boals will make them a legitimate contender in 2 years. Saul Phillips was a $500,000/year disaster.
  14. Serious question: If Zips win the MAC Tourney (from what I've seen, it's going to be either Akron or Kent), does a bigger school come after Groce again?
  15. That's awesome. Had several friends who lived in "Gam."
  16. Well, if you're interested in facts... This young lady drove onto campus in Athens and turned on a very loud, train-like siren. She then exited the vehicle with a microphone and cameraman and approached an African-American student to request a "man on the street" interview. She then asked, "Don't you feel blacks should thank whites for the fact that we don't permit slavery today?" Question to an LGBT couple: "Why do you feel you have the same rights as everyone else?" With a few more of these gems, she had a crowd. She then started spewing crap about how she was going to bring an army of gun owners to campus. Gun Girl came to town with plans to upset people, capture some audio/video of students calling her names and then repackage that content - with strategic editing - to advance her agenda. The dangerous power of social media.
  17. If you want to see a coach get defensive, watch the latest Tom Arth press conference. Asked some tough questions, but boy does he go on and on and on in defending his approach to building a program. Average length of answer seemed like 4 minutes. Interesting note, this was the pre-Ohio press conference but there was not a single question about or mention of Tuesday's game.
  18. Really nothing left to spoil. Ohio choked again and is out of the MAC East race. Miami has the division title locked up.
  19. He went 9-5 and earned a GMAC Bowl slot in his second season, so it's not like there was a five year wait for results.
  20. Kent hired Sean Lewis 12/19. He was a great choice, IMO.
