  1. Solich explained afterward, including to TB, that the last score was to retain OU's total points leadership over Toledo...as a means to get a better bowl bid.
  2. I can't believe the Board would be stupid enough to authorize this move and light (another) fire related to perceived financial mismanagement.
  3. But reality also includes the need to be financially responsible...something the U as a whole needs to be very careful about in this era.
  4. George Thomas posted his latest article about the cancellation at 9:49 p.m. last night. There were 7-8 misspellings/grammatical errors. It looks like an editor made several corrections at 10:30 last night and then several more at 8:30 this morning. But the lede remains unchanged: "A combination of weather and logistics combined forced postponement of the University of Akron’s season opener against Nebraska on Saturday night in Lincoln, Neb." I get that George doesn't know better, but they must have 1-2 decent copy editors still on staff, right?
  5. How would Treadwell know since he wasn’t here at the time of the alleged offense?
  6. Good news is that our intrepid beat reporter at the ABJ won't pick up this story...unless it's turned into a Star Wars movie he can review. Waste of flesh.
  7. Why is Akron such a better job than BG? How is the vision any better? Resources? I suspect their budget is in much better shape and enrollment more stable in recent years.
  8. Something tells me he wasn't pleased with the BOT's intervention in his daily job. There's no other reason why he would suddenly morph from highly motivated leader to someone who can't get out of town fast enough. UA's board has a less than stellar record over the past 20 years.
  9. You do realize that Dambrot was FORCED by the admin. to do something about Treadwell? He argued vehemently against it. He also argued against throwing the Puerto Rican drug trafficker off the team, so there's no place for throwing rocks here. Groce was hardly clean in Athens - he brought in a couple of very questionable people who played key roles in his post-season success. And part of his problem at Illinois was a repeated string of off-court issues among players in the first 2-3 years.
  10. Edward R. Murrow, er, George Thomas' latest article casually mentions that Saturday's game will be the final game of Duvivier's Zips career. Could George have mistakenly omitted the word "home," or is said player not planning to participate in any tournament contests?
  11. I have season tickets for the Zips, if that matters. But yes, I am an OU alum and fan.
  12. I have an interesting perspective on Groce - an honest one. But remember that I'm an OU grad. I thought he was vastly overrated in Athens...except for his recruiting. He was an exceptional recruiter and had a killer class set to come in the year after he left OU. I also thought he was a horrible X's and O's coach. Remember, he never finished higher than third in the MAC and honestly never made a serious run at Akron for regular season honors. Ho lost a ton of games that he should't have. So why did his star rise so fast? He got really lucky at the right time of the year. If DJ Cooper doesn't hit a double-clutch, desperation three-pointer thrown from his hip with a man all over him as the shot clock expired late in the championship game at Gund Arena, OU maybe qualifies for the NIT that year. Instead, they get hot against an overconfident (but by no means great) Michigan team and a decent South Fla. to advance in the NCAA's. My biggest beef with Groce was that he lets his emotions control him during the game and loses focus on the fundamental strategic moves that make coaches like Dambrot so damn good. The question for the Zips is whether Groce can continue to strike gold on the recruiting trail now that his career has been set back a bit. It will be good for the league if Akron (and Ohio) can get back to the top of the standings, so I guess I hope for his success.
  13. He did write the article - that is confirmed. But he did it by following the game online. Guild (union) rules are that if you cover a story "virtually," you don't get a byline.
  14. The only future of daily newspapers (beyond the NYT and Washington Post) is to be hyper-local, with lots of names/faces and really strong coverage of stories the internet and national media can't touch. That seems to be lost on the folks at 44 East Exchange. Black Media paid way too much for the paper and has decimated the staff/morale to try to limit their losses.
  15. Along with laziness. His defense is always, "Hey, I do what my employer asks of me and nothing more." My father was an employee of the ABJ back in the day. During the blizzard of '78, he and several co-workers tried to WALK to work to make sure the paper got out. Now proofreading your own copy is too much to ask. BTW, my dad only made it to Highland Square before he realized his folly. The owner of the Bucket Shop was cleaning up from the previous night, so pops had many beers before calling for us to pick him up. My mom told him to walk back home (3 miles).
  16. Got a kick out of GT's game story last night, in which he identified the opponent as "Ohio Bobcats University" in the lede. Proofreading ain't his thang.
  17. Bobcats aren't laughing at anyone this year.
  18. This is potentially a very big story. You would think that intrepid Zips beat reporter at 44 E. Exchange would be all over this. Uh, never mind.
  19. Akron fans seem to complain more about officials than any other MAC school. But they have a legitimate reason: they listen to Steve French, the biggest ref-baiter in the history of sports broadcasting.
  20. OU fans claim French referred to Groce as a "clown" multiple times on the radio a few years ago. Wonder how that's playing out?
