Evan Wilson’s girlfriend, Ellen Kinnaird, is a Middle Blocker for the VB team. Sammy and a couple other guys on the team usually join Evan at the games. Always so cool to see the support.

Surely, that head coach would never disappoint during a high expectation season with a 1-4 team coming to town, right?!?! https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/401020812

Akron has fired every single coach in its Division 1-A football existence. Joe Moorhead is the most accomplished head coach they have hired since Faust, and that was marginal accomplishment at best. Every time you fire a coach, especially a well-accomplished coach with a good track record, the fewer quality candidates you will find who are interested in the job. Look at Joe’s comments regarding the Brookhart firing. Most coaches worth a damn would have no interest in the Akron job if we just dumped Moorhead before he has time to actually build something. Anyone calling for his firing is someone who has no connections in the college football world or knowledge of how anything in college football works. Luke Getsy interviewed for this job in 2018. He said the AD at the time was a jackass and had no interest in ever speaking with him again. Relationships and reputations matter. Fortunately Williams isn’t here anymore, but that doesn’t mean Guthrie and Co. are immune to making their own mistakes and burned bridges. The coach-speak is old to me too, but coach-speak is coach-speak. Moorhead has won a MAC title, B1G title, coached vs. Nick Saban and Ed Orgeron. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that NIU shouldn’t be out-gaining you by 7,000 yards on homecoming. 10 years ago, in year 2, Akron lost to Ohio 43-3 on homecoming, only to rally to win 4 of their last 5 to finish 5-7. Granted, they laid an egg in 2014, but still finished strong even after a 1-6 start in ‘13 (2-17 thru 19 games with that staff). All is not lost in 2023 yet, but we are close. For 6 straight seasons, we have dealt with horrid football. In 2018, I was furious. 2019 thru 2021, pretty apathetic. 2022, optimistic, 2023, angry and disappointed. Zero happiness. Akron football isn’t for everybody.

This season is a failure. Still can be made a success, but it’s now officially labeled a failure in my eyes. Time to see what the guys are made of. And I would start to expect some coaching staff shakeups after the season.

In true MAC fashion, BG has yet to score on Miami deep into the 4th quarter following a blowout win on the road against an ACC school.

We’re going to the Rose Bowl!!!!

43-3 to OU actually

Funny enough, the homecoming game his 2nd year was just about identical to this one

Our favorite homecoming tradition

This is the Akron football I remember

Wow! Running backs! Back to back first downs! Touchdown!

It feels like college football in Akron today! Busy lots already. Nice football weather. Would love to see a W on the board today, more than usual!

I feel ashamed for not being all that excited about today. We get 5-6 home games a year to enjoy and the first two have just been so ugly that I find myself dreading the thought of watching more football there. How nice! There’s an old saying that if you have two QBs, you don’t have one. I worry about that at the prospect of doing dual QB. I’m hoping Coach could come up with something to get this offense back to life. Getting playmakers the ball, getting chunks of yards. NIU has a stellar defense. In 2015, we saw our 3rd string QB come off the bench in week 3 and wind up leading us to a 7-3 record as a starter. Then in 2021 our third stringer came off the bench at BG and led us to a blowout victory. Maybe the same thing happens today, who knows. Go Zips!

5-1! They take down CMU in 5 sets. Great game.
-
Still less shocking than kicking off x 2 vs. Gardner-Webb 🤣

NIU’s offense has been as disastrous as Akron’s. Lombardi got benched against Tulsa then looked like Tom Brady against Toledo. As with every Akron game, I expect it to end in a close loss, but if Rocky is on, it will not be close.

Line is down to -5 from -6.5. Hmmmm….

2nd year head coach Tyson Norton has the Zips playing well early in the conference season. They’re now 9-7 overall and 4-1 in the MAC after their third consecutive sweep. They’ve won 9 consecutive sets and are back home tomorrow at 6:00p vs. CMU.

In all fairness to Undercuffler, I once said the same thing. Funny enough, it was in the first half of that NIU game last year. A few throws later and we blew them out. That said, he is probably close to Ramart on the list of worst QBs to ever start a game for Akron, at least in the last 20 years.

Could be a special year, just gotta be careful of the expectations as a Zips fan. Opening in South Dakota is a hell of a challenge, and this board will probably melt down if there’s a bad showing out there. I’m hoping the previously stated Ali status is true. I heard today that it wouldn’t be determined until closer to the season. Anyway, I feel with all the guys transferring now and getting waivers, there’s no reason Ali shouldn’t be able to play this year. There are guys on their 6th, 7th, 8th years playing without having to sit out.

I view Toledo the same way now that I did Akron back in the early 2000s/End of Rubber Bowl era. They win more games and win more titles than Akron did, but the community interest is strong. You can walk into the local businesses and see a lot of Toledo gear, hear people talking about Toledo coaches and players. I used to love that about Akron. Now, when it gets to February and March, people ask me how the Zips did this year or how they're looking for next year, totally unaware of anything. This fanbase is dormant and I can't blame them. I hope it comes back to life one day, but it would take a lot more than a couple of 5 win seasons and a single winning season over 20 years.

We really are the Nebraska of the MAC. Joe taking over was like Scott Frost coming to the rescue in Lincoln, only for close losses to go from signs of encouragement to the expectation.
