Joe Moorhead Officially Hired as Head Football Coach
LoyalZIP replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Football
Whose salary will be higher, Moorhead or Groce? -
A-Roo is always a nostalgic logo. I remember a number of UA admins back in the day referring to it as the “rat head” but it was our rat head! As much as I associate it with the helmets of the era of a MAC title, we had those helmet decals all through the Ianello years so I also associate it with the death of Akron football. The Z represents a time of change and “moving on” if you will. The potato bowl uniform may be my favorite Akron has ever worn, either that or what we wore at Oklahoma. Script Akron? I loved it as a basketball logo. Football? I associate it with 0-12, 1-5, 2-10. And it’s just not flashy in any way. I’ve heard that they’re working on something different, hoping it’s true.

The entire football office got let go. A GA or two could be retained, but that will be up to JoMo. I would be shocked if anyone of any significance is brought back. The program was just as much a mess on the inside as it was on the field. Moorhead would likely not have a hard time filling spots with far more experienced and competent people, and if it costs a couple of players not wanting to stay, they know where the door is.

That's a very fun opponent to play. One that will not back down and will make you uncomfortable. Rarely do I get annoyed with visiting nonconference coaches, I thought that was a lot of fun! With that said, it was nice to see the Zips execute their offense after the first ten minutes. Trimble has had a very nice homestand shooting the ball, Ali not so much. Dawson was very good once again, and I thought Castaneda played a nice game as well. I'm so impressed by Tribble putting the team on his back, and he led at the foul line today. Freeman is awesome! This group still has a ton of work to do. I like the depth, but there are too many empty minutes by Aziz and Clarke right now. I'd like to see Wynn worked in a little bit more too. On to the next one.

Today in Akron fandom: Moorhead hire official...✅ Kent gets destroyed in football title game...✅ Now it's your turn, Groce! Go Zips!

This is a very interesting convo that can probably be much better explained by a lot more people than me, but I'll give it a shot. I think it largely comes down to scheming and using the personnel in the right places. I knocked Feeney because routinely players would run across the field under the defense wide open, or players would be wide open on the sidelines constantly. That shouldn't happen repeatedly for three season. At some point, you need to give up on a strong pass rush and drop guys into coverage and make the QB beat you another way. Offensively, it can be style and playcalling in addition to the using of the right personnel. You're playing a matchups game.

JOE BLEEPING MOORHEAD!!!!!!! Let's get drrrrrrruuuuuunkkkk!!!!!!
-
Goodness gracious, relax. I just want the John Carroll players to go to John Carroll. I don't give a flying you know what about scholly numbers and all that crap. If the roster isn't unrecognizable from what it currently is in two years, I would be absolutely shocked. This roster is currently one of the worst to ever play 1A football for Akron. Be gone.

Tweets from random fans that are in actuality fringe college football fans just don’t get it. You wonder why he’s taking a “step down” or saying he “could do so much better”? Read his quotes from the other day. They say it all. End of discussion. He’s not the first coach to make a move like this, and he certainly won’t be the last.

The Falcons have a nice little winning streak going against KD. Who would've thought that would ever be possible?
-
Well duh. But I'm talking Thomas Hammock kind of stuff. I'm expecting/hoping for at least 60% of the roster to be brand new. By year two, 90%. Somewhere in that ballpark.

I like the expectation of 6 wins. I think it’s fairly reasonable based on the track record. I would put my own personal expectations for him around 4 in large part due to the severe lack of talent on the roster. He will almost undoubtedly use the portal to turnover the roster completely. I am very optimistic. This must be what Miami fans felt like in 2010 when they landed LeBron. This almost guarantees you success. Bring on St. Francis!! Pack Infocision!!!

You know it!

This is still crazy to me. I mean, when Moorhead was at Penn State, he was one of the hottest names and biggest stories of those two years in all of college football! Now he's going to be the head ball coach for YOUR UNIVERSITY OF AKRON ZIPS!!! I can't wait for the announcement. I'm hoping it comes early tomorrow afternoon so it can dwarf whatever else is going on in the league at the time. 😉

Zips certainly had their fair share of uncharacteristic blown coverages last night. As soon as they took their biggest lead, Aziz sagged off of shooters on back to back possessions (mismatch to begin with) and the lead disappeared instantly. On XC, I would be very worried if he was shooting at a high volume inefficiently, but he's not shot the ball much at all. His effective field goal percentage (eFG) is 64% and he's 16-19 at the foul line. He's not creating much of any of his own shots, which is a concern. Maybe seeing him run the 2-guard would help as he could work to get open and spot up, maybe take on off the dribble. I'm most concerned about 11 assists all year so far. He's got to be more impactful. I don't think he's necessarily holding the Zips back in any way, he's just failing to be a floor general.

Agreed. I remember hearing back when he left that it wasn't on great terms, as there was kind of a "watch your own death" situation happening with that final season of theirs being full of weird turmoil. But he worked his way up here, he was very well-respected, he was a hell of a recruiter, he coached a great group of RBs. Bring him home Joe. Edit: I will never understand why I remember all of this completely useless nonsense about history of Akron athletics, but a quick search and here we go!
-
Agreed. He wasn't present on the stat sheet so much, but he played a really good game. His D on Taylor with a couple seconds to go was superb, and a guy that had been hitting a whole lot of junk all night missed the shot. The free throws as well. The missed layup to set up the tying play (LOL), and challenging the inbound after Freeman's free throws. I'm more concerned about Clarke. He's allowed Tribble to surpass him in both leadership and ability. But we know what Clarke is capable of, he had some very impressive moments buried on the depth chart last year. I'm ready to see him blossom. Groce missed on Walton. I'm sure Ball State is laughing, as they should. I'm bummed about the wasted scholly, but as far as the basketball and chemistry part at this point, it's addition by subtraction. Like I said, be thankful it happened now when there's plenty of time to improve and grow.

Syracuse let go of former Zip support staffer Reno Ferri this week. He was here with Moorhead and knows what winning looks like at Akron. Other than that, I could see Charlie coming to be OC. But I'm not sure he's as close with Moorhead as everyone thinks. As long as he doesn't poach a handful of the new staff from Ravenna U like Mr. Arth did, I trust his judgement and am eager to see how this staff shapes up.

The Joe Moorhead effect on offense! What a wild game. That might be Tribble’s best as a Zip, though he flamed out a bit in the second half. Freeman was a monster though, he played tough all game and Marshall guarded him pretty well. Also heard KJ Walton quit. He took disappearing far too seriously! I’m glad it’s happening now instead of a month or two from now though. That was anyones game, Akron just made the most plays in the last 40 seconds. Whatever it takes, right? Go Zips!!
-
I'd clean it daily. Wax it every two months. Get those tires shining. Maybe a monthly detail. If this guy can get double digit wins at Akron, Zip fans would be shoving me out of the way so they can have the honor!

The grin says it all!!!!

This is truly amazing. I can't wait to see the official Tweet with the graphic that reads: JOE MOORHEAD--HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON The future is now. Akron football has a good an opportunity as it has ever had to return the magic. I believe in Joe!
