  1. The only player who saw the floor for Akron yesterday to score fewer than 5 points was Greg Tribble, who had 3. Also had 3 assists and 3 turnovers. I found it interesting that he, again, passed up a pretty open look in the paint. Still so valuable despite that performance. As I said last night, it still seems like the game is a little fast for Scott. He has yet to make a three vs. a D1 team, but has shown to be a good finisher in transition, which is important considering he's a pretty good defensive guard. He and Tavari, along with Thornton who is transitioning to winning basketball bit quicken than his NIU teammate Hankerson, will be a handful for opposing guards. Tribble too, obviously. I was somewhat worried Freeman would have too quick a trigger from three at times, but he's taken really smart ones. He's 3-5 on the season, and none bigger than the dagger yesterday. His perimeter work may have also helped his FT shooting too, with only 6 misses through 4 games. Before all games were televised in some way or another, I used to rely on Steve French and Joe Dunn to tell the story for games like these. I have so many memories over the years of these early season away-from-home games against teams we should beat 9/10 times. I could hear them last night in my head, in disbelief at all of the bad passes and steals, jealous of the 3pt. shooting of Krivokapic. But last night, unlike so many of those Akron teams over the last 20 years, they sealed the deal. Not too unlike So. Miss, the flood gates opened late, and it started on DEFENSE. Much like South Dakota State was one of the more impressive nonconference wins (despite the fact they still have not won a D1 game), beating Utah State would be just as impressive. In our third trip to the Caymans in six years, we only made it to the semis last year, which wound up being a sizable loss to LSU, in which the Zips led for a good chunk. There are 362 Division 1 teams, and the Zips and Aggies are separated by only 4 spots in KenPom. Their only loss was in OT at Bradley, a soon to be common opponent, and have a great offense-defense balance. They even play a similar tempo to Akron. Zips are -1.5 at the books.
  2. So bad. The same tournament bit Toledo in the rear last year too. They lost to a sub-300 UMKC team by 12 and a mediocre ECU by 11.
  3. The horrors of the Gulf Coast Showcase. That game against Evansville where they finally won was even hard to watch. The KJ Walton quit game.
  4. You’ve seen them held to 55, what’s the difference?? A perfect cap to a great day to be a Zip.
  5. Many “Austin Peay’s” have bitten us in the past. Ohio States, Fordhams. I was surprised, but not shocked, when Joe Dunn first mentioned this as a possibility last week. 2013 team started 0-1 with an OT loss to a bad Coastal team to open their new arena. 2012 started something like 3-5. 2020 lost at WVU in game 2.
  6. Krivokapic missed his first 13 three-point attempts on the season, but has hit 8-12 since. Almost single-handedly beat us.
  7. FIU-Marshall will be fun tomorrow. Zips have their hands full tomorrow. They’re not what they were the last couple years, but Utah State is a very solid program. The press had a lot to do with the struggles today. Zips couldn’t control the pace, and didn’t when they had the chance. They played on edge, and it showed in every facet. Rematch of the Potato Bowl is cool.
  8. Very fortunate. Clutch as hell. Dawson with the nearly costly turnover but made up for it at the other end. Getting it out of 23’s hands until it was out of reach was enormous.
  9. Unreal that we have more fouls on us. And can’t hit a foul shot.
  10. It shouldn’t shock you that Matt Potter was one of the refs for UCLA.
  11. Not loving this right now. The longer the less-skilled team hangs around, the b tougher they are. Too many 0-1 pass possessions for Akron. FIU also starting to get away with more physicality.
  12. Congrats to ‘Riq! Fortunate to be up 7. Guards got to chill out.
  13. Just came here to post the same thing. They’re 9-3, and that’s with a week 0 loss at HOME to UMass. Incredible.
  14. Amazing what happens when you follow the contract you signed
  15. Yup. The U wants to find a big regular season game to replace the Hoban-St. V game. Also would love to host the state titles, but logistically would be a big challenge.
  16. There will not be 10,000 fans at the stadium. It will look like 20k, but that’s because fans of MAC sports programs no longer know how to judge actual attendance anymore. Also, the bag policy is the same now as it was for the two times that Hoban played at Akron last year in the playoffs. There’s a reason the schools and OHSAA love playing at Akron. They are the best host these schools get until Canton.
  17. My sources tell me they’ve changed their name to the Walsh CavalUSers following that huge scrimmage. Greg Gumbel is sure to mention it on Selection Sunday when awarding Oakland their 16-seed play-in spot.
  18. Same for taking the FG on 4th and 2 from the 5 at Indiana in 2OT. Poorly read situations by the staff.
  19. Hell of a gritty win to give Gensler the first, of hopefully many, of his HC career, 63-58 over Robert Morris in their education day game. Zips got into OT and really began to play well. Alexis Mobley with a sweet turnaround fadeway late in the shot clock with about 16 seconds left put the Zips up 3. Bass then stuffed a 3 pt. attempt and dribbled into the front court before the Zips were fouled with a little over a second to go. Hit both shots, ball game.
  20. Not a clue. He did not participate in shootaround before the doors opened either.
