i wondered what people think about the zips defense next year.i am not really talking about formation, but personell.i know jd has some jc db on the way.bain would be a big help also.i wondered about the lb positon.the guys we have coming back at lb are not very big.i know the 3-3-5 calls for alott of quick lb's.i just don't see how a 200 lb is going to take on a 300lb o-lineman in the run game.we can never get pressure on the qb either;so how is all this so called speed helping?i really think whatever defense we play.jd needs to find some size at the lb spot.i think the 4-3 will help, but he still needs to find a big lb or two that can play right away.i also think the d-line coaching is not very good.i am not calling out any one coach, but we never can put pressure on the qb.i don't know how many times we would have third/long,and the opponent would get a first down.

the spacebar.is right below the keys 'c'-'m'.and the shift key, used for capitalization, is to the left of the 'z' key, and to the right of the '?' key.your posts would be much easier to read (decipher) if you used them.did you graduate from Can't? ;)

I honestly cannot believe the defensive staff is being left intact. Unlike my good friend Barack Obama (sarcasm), Mr. Brookhart apparently doesn't believe in "change", and as a result, we as Zip fans have no "hope". :(

I've said this before, but what this defense needs more than anything else is a couple of impact players. Playmakers like Mackey and Stokes were not easy to replace, and that was obvious this year. I hope Bain is one of those guys, but we need a couple of guys in the LB and Secondary to emerge as well.

SO you think the defense was good last year with Mackey and Stokes??It sucked with them too. Just not as bad. There are mulitple levels of sucktitude. To make this defense work you would need playmakers like Ray Lewis, Jason Taylor, Dre Bly, Troy Polomaua(sp) Ed Reed, Shawm Merriman and Brian Urlacher....Sorry, but those guys don't come to Akron for college.

Buckzip, I mostly agree with your post....but...I do distinctly remember a player named Jason Taylor or somthing similar who went to Akron lol.

That was intentional. I didn't think that would be caught so quickly...LOL

We may not see a Jason Taylor caliber player again for a long time, but you desperately need impact players on that side of the ball. I'm sure maybe people can name a few others who might fit that bill in recent years besides Stokes and Mackey...you might even be able to put the 2007 version of Reggie Corner into that category. But, if anyone wants to take a stab at labeling the players who were big difference makers on our 2008 defense, I'd love to hear it.

Cincy had a very good defense this year, their DC is Joe Tresey, the same guy that LO brought in for his last year or 2. What I remember is that Tresey was an upgrade from past D's but we went from downright horrible to just bad. And Tresey did not get much love on the board. I have a feeling that even if we had Bill Belichick running our defense we would still be bad. I know the scheme stinks, but why can't we seem to get playmakers on D? Over the last 20 years, how many of them have we even had a fair defense, maybe 4 or 5 years out of 20?

Racer, you are killing me with your never ending quest to discover capitals and punctuation. You can't be that lazy or did you really go to Can't? Hopefully, you are just a student who doesn't give a damn. The real world will be a shock one day. :D It is Christmas, though, and we should love everyone, even Can't fans. On second thought, let me think about that for a while. But you do have a good point in that our D lacks any linebackers with the size to make an impact at the line when plugging holes. We have rarely had the size at LB to play the 3-3-5. Yet we stay with it. I assume the coaches are doing their best to bring in the talent we need. That being said we have to show the flexibility to use the defensive scheme that suits our talent and is effective. The 3-3-5 may suit our talent, but is not effective. Hence JD has got to change. If he opens next year in the 3-3-5 I would read that as an open admission that he is beyond his coaching ability and we need to plan a change at the end of the season. There has got to be a potential D coordinator out there who can do a better job than Fleming did if Fleming is not committed to change. I hope JD finds that guy this off-season.What a nice Christmas present that would be. BTW, let's throw in a QB who can win games in the fourth quarter.Happy New Year!

I think it goes both ways. I think the players have to be put in a good position so they can become play-makers.I believe we do have play-makers on the defensive side of the ball right now, we need some teaching/coaching.Not being able to replace Mackey and Stokes...that gave me a good morning laugh, thanks.

Right....we have some big time playmakers on our defense right now...and they will suddenly and mysteriously emerge just as soon as they get a little bit more "coaching and teaching".
Good, disciplined players play within the scheme the coaches give them. They are restricted to doing their job, and trusting that everyone else will be in the right spot, ESPECIALLY in the 33 stack. If a scheme sucks, and players aren't given the opportunities to make plays, it doesn't matter how good the player is, unless he just decides to say screw the scheme and try to make plays on his own, which can lead to whole 'nother set of issues. The 33 stack defense has it's advantages at times, but overall, it isn't effective as a base scheme, which we've witnessed over the last few years. We need to go to either a 3-4 or a 4-3 and get another big body on the field so teams aren't just pulling guards and running power up and down the field on us the entire game. Personally, I'm a fan of the 3-4 because it gives you more options in blitz packages and coverage schemes, allows more disguise, and allows you more of an ability to confuse offensive lineman and quarterbacks.
