If we go 6-6 or better this year then we can worry about golfing next year. As far as "contributor's" from last year, they were few and far between so everyone should get a fair shot, of course the way JD handled his talent leaves alot to be desired. Overall just win and I don't give a damn about the fluff

Overall just win and I don't give a damn about the fluff +1 ....... do this and even the merchandizing madness might take care of itself......might I guess I'm not TOO surprised that the early "negative" opinion of RI is slightly out-polling the "positive" opinion. I wonder how much of this is him and how much is due to the fan base (including myself) being in sort of a funk at this point. I would think that with most programs breaking in a new coach in a nearly new stadium, that optimism would reign supreme. That surely isn't the case here. Is it NE Ohio sports mentality creeping in? Or is it simply that many of us have been Zip gridiron fans for too long?
InTheZone
I'm disturbed by Rasor's reporting of a "rebuilding" attitude by Ianello. Say what you will about JD, but his last couple recruiting classes were solid and he did not "leave the cupboard bare." There is the talent on the team to win the MAC next year and it is not the time to start playing a bunch of freshman to hopefully be good 2-3 years down the road. Neither the fans nor Proenza have the patience for that. If you want to build something here, win right out the gate and establish a culture of winning here, and get the fans excited. Another 3-9 season reestablishes the culture of losing that has been Akron football the last 5 years.
ZachTheZip
It's not so much "rebuilding" as it is "reorganizing". You can't trade away your players to another team for prospects in college. The best players will play. Under JD, that wasn't always the case. JD had too much loyalty toward his upperclassmen. This is a chance for some of the talent JD recruited to finally get to play, instead of being stuck behind other players.

It's not very often that you see a returning starter beaten out for his starting job. Yes, it does happen, but not very often. I think this is the best thing if he is building. If there is a returning senior starter that is barely ahead of a freshman or soph, I would rather paly the younger guy knowing he will improve. If UA can have a decent season with a lot of youth playing, that is good for the next year.

I would always be surprised if a coach actually really sacrificed quality of play to play his "favorites". Every college coach wants to win....and HAS to win. Could a coach be sticking with his older players because he believes that experience matters? And how do we know that our new coach won't at some point stick with his older players for the same reason as they age in their careers? It's just hard for me to buy into the the idea that, with the fragile nature of college coaching jobs, a coach would put guys on the field that can't help us win...only because they like them. scottditzen
Interesting points on favoritism and the logic of winning. Most recently we've seen Rich Rodriguez up in Michigan favor his "system" above all else, despite not having the players to effectively implement it. Chalk it up to either persistence or being blindly stubborn. It's not so much "rebuilding" as it is "reorganizing". You can't trade away your players to another team for prospects in college. Overall just win and I don't give a damn about the fluff My sentiments exactly. Most of what Razor writes is really pertainent and is very insightful, but I have a hard time understanding the importance of rating a coach before the season begins. If he wins, but treats the media the way Bill Belicheck does, then I'm okay with that. But if he loses, he will be run out of town just like the last two were. I didn't vote in the poll because I felt it was too soon to pass down judgement. Lets take a vote after the first six games and then again at the end of the season. RACER
when you have two wins last season akron is in a rebuilding mode.just watch some bcs bowl games. from watching texas tech play boise there is big difference in team speed especially on defense. some people thought jd was a bad coach, but had some talent on the field.the only place akron has some players is on the d-line,and one linebacker.our offense was terrible.the qb is going to be good, but he cannot throw the ball to himself.until RI gets some speed on defense akron is going nowhere. i think our defense was competitive last year, but did not have any help from he offense. i jus don't think jd left enough talent to win more then 3-4 games.maybe allen comes back 100% which will help, and the d-line can carry the team for the first few games.if not this will be along season. Another 3-9 season reestablishes the culture of losing that has been Akron football the last 5 years. I agree. I've seen enough building and rebuilding over the past 20+ years. It's time to start winning. Think of the logic. We are always focused on "building" so we get what is supposed to be building and no winning. Maybe if we focus on "winning" we will get winning. Let's try focusing on some W's.
GP1
when you have two wins last season akron is in a rebuilding mode.just watch some bcs bowl games. Akron isn't a BCS school. We are a MAC school. We have enough talent to win in the MAC. A good defensive line and LBs are a good start. A good QB is an even better start. A WRs performance can improve with an accurate QB because the ball is easier to catch. UofA has as good of a chance of making a bowl game next year as anyone else in the MAC. They just have to get the job done.

RACER
i have watched enough of akron losing to mac teams. we beat one d-1 team last year.if you hire a new coach you need to give the time to build a competitve team.the one game that really showed the lack of talent was the temple game.we looked like a high school team.i do think we have a good d-line,and some decent lb.we have a good qb.we have no rb unless allen comes back 100%.one decent wr,and our o-line played terrible last year.if he can turn things around in year one that's great.i just think it's unfair to expect a new coach to have winning season this year.i really did not like the hire of RI,but now that's he is here we need to give the guy a fair chance. OK... what team do you consider 1-AA: K.e.n.t. or Eastern Michigan? The MAC is a weak conference. LIke ITZ state -- JD's last couple recruiting classes were solid. They just came too late to save him. The Zips should compete for a MAC East title this season.

zipboy
From the PD when Rob was hired on Dec 10th Yet the core question is can Ianello win here immediately, with seven starters coming back on offense and nine coming back on defense off a team that was initially projected to be a contender in the Mid-American Conference before suspensions and injuries effectively chop-blocked any chance at success. "That's the expectation, that we go out and do some special things early on," Ianello said. "I told our players, 'I am not standing in front of you talking about five years from now,' I'm here talking to you about the here and now.'" I will be disappointed if we don't go at least 6-6. 1-3 OOC and 5-3 in the MAC puts at 6-6.
ZachTheZip
The MAC has been doing a "getting to know" feature on football players for about a month now. Ianello has refused to give out any information for them to write an article, so Akron doesn't get any free publicity while other schools have two or three articles already out and more being put out daily. 72 Roo
Folks, Get ready to party all you want, but it won't be because we win the MAC East. We have way too many unsettled issues to think we will win it. We have a coach who has never run a team, a staff that thinks they are better than they are and have yet to think as one, no winning tradition, a new O scheme, a questionable O line (don't buy the crap that they were so good last year), questionable kickers, no depth at wide out, small LB's, A QB who has never been under center now getting used to a new center, and a D backfield that needs rebuilt. C'mon let's get real. I want to win as much as anyone, but we are not prepared to do it. It's just wishful thinking with no substance behind it. I give us a shot at 6-6 at best. I hope I'm wrong.
