Dr Z
One week Plain Dealer quotes Browns players saying "it's there job to fly around and break up passes"...this week, not so. Hilltopper
suspend head-hunting harrison. the NFL's mandatory removal of the game of Cribbs and Massaquoi rewards helmet to helmet headhunting and it's really stupid. I understand the safety issues with concussions, but we already have pink-skirt rules in the NFL anyway. Harrisson should have been flagged on the first shot on cribbs, and ejected for the second shot. Two players removed from the game because of that crap. What rules were broken? Even some Browns call them clean hits. Whats that saying? The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree? http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/r/23517483/detail.html The mother of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct Tuesday in Akron, Ohio. Harrison hasn't done anything wrong. I'm not sure what the referece to his mother has to do with anything. I saw Harrison at a hockey game once. Between periods, he said hello to and took photos with anybody who asked. He isn't a bad guy, just a hardass....the kind of hardass any Browns fan would love to have on their team. Dr Z
You could of bought a photo of the hit on the NFL website if you were quick. According to NFL.com, Harrison is considering retiring now. "I'm going to sit down and have a serious conversation with my coach tomorrow and see if I can actually play by NFL rules and still be effective," Harrison said. "If not, I may have to give up playing football." source

Dr Z
Give up playing the game because he can't drill opposing players with his head? Just attention, or for real? Bill Parise, Harrison's agent, confirmed that the linebacker is contemplating retirement, which is why he met with Tomlin this morning."That's exactly true,'' Parise said. "He met with the coach and left for today. He's in the process of contemplating is it possible to play football under these new rules . . . 'if I go to work and tackle somebody and get a fine.'" Parise said there is "no fighting, no arguing," just discussions. He said Harrison has been talking with his coaches, the Steelers, his mother and the agent. Harrison signed a six-year, $51.2 million contract in April 2009 that included a reported $20 million in bonuses. If Harrison would retire before the contract expires, the Steelers could demand he pay back some of those bonuses. Can anybody play ESPiN now-a-days? What are the odds that Silverback is the first person in NFL history suspended because of an "illegal" hit? Tennesee game film from this year!?!? The Zips could use three of him. You listen to him speak and you wouldn't think he could find his way to practice, you watch film on him and the guy is rarely out of position in one of the most complex schemes in football. MDZip
GP1 may be right. Far from being all McCoy but the Browns knocking off New Orleans and now maybe New England? Maybe they can just beat teams that start with New because they think they are expansion teams?
you am i
I see some Brian Sipe-type qualities in McCoy. Not ideal physical skills, but football smart, intelligent, gutty. The team seems to responds to him. And having Hillis in the backfield sure helps the passing game.

He doesn't look great, but he is managing the game and not losing it for the team. It will be interesting once teams have more game film on him and learn his tendencies to see if he can continue to improve. As of right now, it looks like the Browns may have their QB. I don't eve see him being an all pro type, but maybe he can just be a nice steady QB.

BZ just zeroed in on what ultimately makes a back-up QB, a starter and a great player. Every QB goes through bad spurts as teams adjust to their play. The key is to break through the obstacles put in front of you and then break through the next and then the next and then the next and so on. There isn't a QB in the NFL who can't string together a good game or two or three. Doing it week in and week oiut is the question.
zippy5
He reminds me of Big Ben in '04. He was 14-19, nothing too great, 170 yards or so I believe. But not many mistakes. We'll see how he looks next year when they open the playbook for him, but I think he'll succeed. He seems like a hard worker with a good head on his shoulders. And he is a winner. Yikes, go Steelers
Dr Z
I'm not one to give the Browns advice as I am a Steelers fan. I guess it isn't as much advice to the Browns as much as it is advice to Browns fans. Here it goes. Try to control your stupidity and don't run McCoy out of Cleveland. Get the guy some help in the form of a better #1 receiver and a better RB than Touchdown Tommy Hillis...or whatever his name is. McCoy handled himself well yesterday against a great defense on the road and for his first game ever. If the Browns do the right things around this guy, they can be a playoff team in the future. In 2-3 years, McCoy may be one of the one half of all starting NFL QBs who doesn't have his head up his butt. Time will tell, but even the Great GP1 and many in the crowd of Steelers fans at Dixies Tavern in Charlotte were impressed by McCoy. The guy can play, now get him some help.I couldn't give an educated opinion to your post until today. I never really got to see the little guy play before, and I can't judge a QB in recent years against the Steelers secondary. Why a team would ever run the ball against the Steelers is beyond me, but that's a different topic (see Tom Brady). I got talked into to taking free tickets to the Browns game yesterday, after swearing to never step foot in that stadium again. I knew the season ticket holders, and knew some people around the seats so I knew it wouldn't be sooooo bad. Being that the only game in the Cleveland market that was being shown was this game at 1 and my regular NFL package guy was out of town, I figured I would go an evaluate the little guy in person since that is the only real way to see exactly what is going on. I saw a guy that either doesn't have the arm to be an NFL QB, or a guy that is REALLY effected by the cold weather. I saw a lot of bad decisions, throwing into double coverage when others were open. The little guy seems to lock on to his receiver and doesn't really go through any progressions. I heard Aikman announcing the GB game yesterday and say that there are cold weather QB's and there are QB's that hate the cold. He mentioned he hated the cold and never played well in the cold. I'm judging all of this on watching the little guy for three quarters, but I'll keep an eye on it. For what it's worth I was listening to Marty Schottenheimer last week on NFL radio (sports fans dream), caller asked about the little guy. Marty politely said, I think Mr Holgrem is going to have to address his quarterback situation in another way.

I'm sure they get thousands a week from Fantasy Footballers and they take them very seriously. You also mention Troy Aikman in your post. I'm old enough to remember this Hall of Fame QB in his first season at Dallas. You could have said the same thing about him. By no means do I think McCoy is a Hall of Famer, but he can be a good player. He has to get better, but everyone has to get better in the NFL or the league catches up with you. If they could get some better players around him (attention Browns fans, Touchdown Tommy Hilis is not the answer), they could win more than they lose or at least go .500 within 2-3 years. Who are we kidding?........By then, Browns fan will have run him out of Cleveland for the next hot prospect. The last time I went to a Browns game in Cleveland that close to Christmas was the Christmas Eve Massacre vs the Steelers. My wife and I were laughing at that game this morning while driving home from Hilton Head. We had club level seats behind the Browns bench. Literally, we had an entire section to ourselves half way through the fourth quarter.

My laughter was reserved for the bitch smacking the Browns put on Rothliesberer....I think they sacked him seven times. It wasn't nearly as fun as watching the 51-0 beat down Bud Carson's boys put on the Steelers in there worse loss ever.

The Browns 2.0 get their one victory every five years against the Steelers and the fans gloat. Then they bring up the past when the Baltimore Ravens blew out the Steelers. That was before Cowher coached Pittsburgh and he was the coach for 15 years. I'd go as far as to say we wouldn't even be having this discussion if the NFL had done the right thing and not given Cleveland back a team after they moved to Baltimore. If not Texas Colt, then who? There isn't a good free agent anywhere who would want to go to Cleveland and they run every young QB they get out of town as soon as they can. That's the problem the Browns have. They need to spend at least the next 2-3 years developing the little guy and getting some better players around him. It was fun watching the destruction of the Browns last weekend and a fantastic way to finish up a holiday weekend. They were finished after the interception in the first quarter. God knows I wouldn't want to have to stand in the pocket down that much against the Steelers defense.

My evaluation of Andy Dalton is almost opposite of my first hand impression of Colt. To evaluate a QB, I truly believe you have to be at the game and sit high enough to watch the way the defense defends the QB and see how he reacts. Dalton is a smart QB, he makes good decisions with the ball. Not the most mobile QB, but is not afraid to get rid of the ball to avoid a sack. He has a strong arm and gets the ball where it needs to be on time. He is able to take what the defense is giving him, but still likes to take his shot down the field. Both of his TD passes yesterday are examples of each. IMO, if Dalton continues to progress, I think he'll be a successful QB in the NFL.
