akzipper
We never had a shot a Leach anyway. Plenty of BCS schools were going to give the guy a second chance. In reality there aren't any coaches I can imagine us having a chance to get that will bring excitement to the community. Of course I'd like to see Stoops, but he just left Arizona so I don't see that happening. Winters is okay, but I doubt any casual fans would even know who he is. Bowden isn't coming here Honestly a DC from a BCS school would give me a little confidence. Reason being I think a successful program begins with defense. You can air it out and score 30+ points every game, but if your defense sucks you're not going anywhere.
Lee Adams
We need to get off the hiring of the 'hot' young coordinators with no HC experieince. This program needs stability. It doesn't need another assistant with no experience running a program trying to learn on the job. Its time for Wistrcill to get on the phone and contact some of the HC's in the GLIAC,Gatweway,Penna State Athl Conf, the OVC etc. who are having some success now. These guys recruit the same areas as Akron, they are familiar with the turf. They may be older guys. They may not have the name recognition of the names being thrown around here. But there are some guys with track records who might be conviced by the facilities and the right $$$ to come here. Winters probably falls into that category. Its tiring watching these guys try to learn on the job then leave with the program in worse shape than when they arrived.

I'm gonna sound like Dave when I say this, but there is no recipe for a good choice. Some great HC's had their first job as a HC in the MAC. Previously their highest position was a coordinator. Urban Meyer, Brady Hoke, Al Golden, Gary Pinkel... Point is, we need to find the right coach for us. He may have been a head coach for 30 years, or never. ZachTheZip
I will say that it is encouraging that Tressel is advising. He's "advising" us to take a position coach with no experience running a team or calling plays. That's not encouraging at all.

Admittedly, Johnson was an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Miami (Oh) before he became the DB coach at OSU. I still prefer someone with actual head coaching experience though... ZipRoo
Gotta say, if Tressel's not taking the UA job himself, I'm not so sure I like him "advising" us on candidates. I think he's got his own agenda now: placing his former associates (coordinators or less) in good jobs. I don't think he's got the same vision of the UA job as we do. I get the feeling he'd recommend anyone if we'd hire them...even if they weren't the right person for the job, as long as his goal is taken care of. In other words, fine...listen to his suggestions, but don't take his word on this hire as the be-all, end-all.
RowdyZip
Can we all just chill out on the rumor stuff. Modern media sucks. How do we KNOW who JT is recommending?
skip-zip
I'd certainly feel better about him recommending someone, if it wasn't someone WHO WORKED FOR HIM.
Dave in Green
I think the best thing for ZN.o is for Zach to pick the coach, because then if the coach doesn't turn the Zips around, we won't have to read all of Zach's posts about the idiot who picked the head coach. icchamp1
The latest from footballscoop... Akron: Multiple sources tell us that the University has spoken with Joe Moorhead (quarterbacks coach at UConn), Paul Winters (head coach at D-II Wayne State) and Mike Johnson (offensive coordinator / interim head coach at UCLA). All three have good ties to Akron. We believe Johnson will provide his input; but remain on the west coast. Both Moorhead and Winters are coaching this weekend. Winters' team, a 6 seed, is playing the defending national champion MN - Duluth and UConn is at Cincinnati needing a win to be bowl eligible. Should get interesting in Akron next week. I would be interested in hearing what DC either could/would hire. Would Paul just bring his DC from D-II? (He has MAC ties) For future reference:
