The Hip Zip
WMU fan here. Sorry for trolling and registering on your board. I read this thread regarding the Puerto Rican Tip Off tourney for 2012. My Broncos were in the field this year. If any of you are considering a trip to San Juan to watch Akron, let me know, I can give you a few helpful tips. I actually took my wife, 3 year old and 1 year old. We had a blast. I had a few reservations about the trip, but it was seriously awesome. Our team's results were horrible, but I got to see some great basketball. It looks like your field should be solid as well. Take it home for the MAC! Looking forward to a potential rematch friday...IF we get there. Thanks for dropping by. I always enjoy reading the views of some of our MAC rival fans. Whether it be discussion about the games or events such as your trip to PR, feel free to share your thoughts at any time. Welcome

Muskegon & Grand Haven are two of my favorite spots on earth! I visit Kalamazoo once in a while & walk around WMU's campus. Beautiful area. I was tossing around the idea of making the Puerto Rico trip, so I'm especially glad you stopped by!

Dave in Green
Back to basketball, I'd like to see the Zips schedule more Big East teams -- home and home.
taxpayer
Wife and I are going to Puerto Rico, great place to visit if you haven't been there. The arena is similar to the Q and I'm hoping we will benefit from Rico and Melo having a homecoming of sorts. Crowds are usually very small so that means you get some great close up looks at the games. Xavier backed out; I'm not sure of their replacement. Can't wait to see the brackets to see who we draw. Xavier's been replaced by UNC-Asheville. No idea how good they are this year, but last year they dominated their conference and lost to Syracuse by just 7 in the NCAAs. mrelegazna
UNC-Asheville is their replacement. They dominated their conference last year and nearly upset 'Cuse in the big dance. No idea how good they are this year.
taxpayer
UNC-Asheville is their replacement. They dominated their conference last year and nearly upset 'Cuse in the big dance. No idea how good they are this year. Thanks for the update. I'd have rather seen Xavier and played them than to play a team like UNC-A. Insiders might appreciate a win over such a team but the general population would see a Zip win over Xavier as a much bigger accomplishment even if UNC-A is better this year than Xavier. I thought the Zips would beat Xavier at a neutral site and get a big bump in recognition. I'm disappointed the Zips won't get that chance. The seedings/bracket in this tournament will be interesting. I believe the Zips have to play NC State in their arena as a part of this tournament and that isn't an appetizing thought. NC State is a very good team and playing them at home will be a huge challenge; I'd much rather play them in Puerto Rico where the crowd wouldn't be a factor. GP1
UNC-Asheville is their replacement. They dominated their conference last year and nearly upset 'Cuse in the big dance. No idea how good they are this year. If losing successful seniors matters, and I think it does in mid major basketball, UNCA will be a little down this coming season. Dickey, Primm and Stephenson were 1, 2 and 3 last year in scoring. All three were seniors. These three were in the top four in minutes played. One guy can be replaced....two, maybe....all three is very difficult in the short term. Still a solid program, but no X. X is a solid program in a very good mid major conference. In fact, the A10 would be a conference I'd like to see the Zips compete in more. Charting our success against programs like X really tells us where we are in realation to other mid major programs. 20 wins is good. 20 wins with wins against programs like X means more. taxpayer
GP1 - thanks for the update on UNC-A; sounds like we should handle them based on their roster changes. What are your thoughts on the Zips vs NC State?
Captain Kangaroo
X is a solid program in a very good mid major conference. I think the A-10 is now a major basketball conference.
Zipmeister
I think the A-10 is now a major basketball conference. I think they may be the highest mid-major BB conference.

Zipmeister
Getting back on topic............. I think we should schedule all the Big Ten teams to play us in Akron. If any of them want us to play at their place, we should if they are willing to do a 2 for 1 deal.

Doubt we will, but it would be nice to shut up the Suckeyes fans.
taxpayer
Duquesne, Pitt, OSU, Xavier, Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State.......they might schedule us in their buildings but I seriously doubt they would play in the JAR. The exception might be Duquesne as they can't "dictate" to mid majors like the others can. Cincy might not even want us in their gym, their OCC is a joke historically. I think the others would schedule us into their building but I seriously doubt they would come into the JAR. After last years "game" versus Valapariso, I'd love to host them in the JAR and would even love to play them at a neutral site game as long as the 3 homers who ref'ed the game last year weren't allowed in the building.
