Statement by the University, emphasis mine:

“When Jim Tressel and other alumni assisted us in our search for a football coach last December, we began to engage in dynamic conversations about Jim’s professional goals outside of athletics. We share a common interest in innovative programs for student success. Our discussions continue.”

I would hope so as well. If this is true, I'm not certain why Proenza couldn't leave well enough alone. I don't want this to be like the horrible situation Faust was put into when Dennison worked as an athletic director.

you would be against this.

This is a great thing for the University!! Getting people like Bowden and Tressel here is what is going to make this "sleeping giant" awake.

What I've heard fits with what's being reported. It would not be an athletic position.

Ok, that's what I figured. However, it doesn't rule out an athletic position once the show clause has expired. Tressel would be 63 at the time, probably too old for another head coaching job, but still young enough to take over the athletic department ... ala Barry Alvarez ... into retirement.

Maybe this is wishful thinking, but I'm dreaming of a plan that sees Tressel take over as AD in five years, and running the department for another five, then giving way to Terry Bowden once he's done coaching. TB can have the position for another five or so years until he retires and gives way to Keith Dambrot. That would set the university up for the next 15-20 years to have great leadership at the top. ... and all guys who love the University of Akron and see the potential the school has in athletics.

NBC Sports has it as a top college news story:

http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2...trator/related/

Over the weekend, a Twitter “report” surfaced that former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel is interested in going back to the collegiate level – at Ohio St. or somewhere else — in an administrative capacity.

Based on another report, that could very well come to fruition sooner rather than later.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Tressel has been in discussions with the University of Akron regarding an administrative position with the school. The Plain Dealer states that an announcement of Tressel’s hiring by the NE Ohio school could take place as early as Thursday.

In a statement, the university did nothing to shoot down the speculation. In fact, they added more fuel to the speculative fire.

“When Jim Tressel and other alumni assisted us in our search for a football coach last December, we began to engage in dynamic conversations about Jim’s professional goals outside of athletics,” the unattributed statement read. “We share a common interest in innovative programs for student success. Our discussions continue.”

There was no detail provided as to whether the administrative position would be inside or outside of the Zips athletic department. Tom Wistrcill was hired as Akron’s athletic director in August of 2009, and has been considered to be by and large a success during his brief tenure.

Since retiring/resigning/being fired as Ohio State’s head coach last memorial Day weekend, Tressel served as a game-day instant replay advisor for the Indianapolis Colts. He was interviewed — twice — for the NFL club’s head coaching vacancy earlier this year, but lost out on the job to Chuck Pagano.

He had also been rumored as a potential head coaching candidate for the Zips before the school hired Terry Bowden.

The paper also reported that Tressel was being considered for administrative leadership posts at Baldwin Wallace College and Wittenberg University. BW was wear his father Lee Tressel became an Ohio small college coaching legend.

Love the statement I put in bold lol...

We went from talking about hiring a bunch of no-name coaches to possibly having both Terry Bowden and Jim Tressel at UA. Holy shit.

Don't forget Amato.

Anyway, that's easily three of the four most recognizable "coaches" in the MAC at the University of Akron. Solich is the only other one in the discussion.

Anybody think he is using Akron to get his name in the press...again?

I don't think he did that the 1st time. Seemed to me like some in the area created rumors that spun out of control. I think it's extremely telling that UA came out with a statement right away and did nothing but add to the fire.

A source has kept telling me there was something going on between UA and Tressel, even after Bowden was hired. Tressel has a lot to bring to a university in Ohio that aspires to greater things. If it isn't obvious now what Tressel would bring to UA, it will become clearer to everyone as this plays out. Buckle up and prepare yourselves for an exciting ride that will carry UA and Zips athletics into a new dimension. Think Big.

You are killing me with this stuff...I need to know!

Taking an academic position doesn't really seem like anything that can influence us athletically. Other than a day of publicity what could we really gain? Give it a few weeks and people will forget he even worked there. Not to mention something like that wouldn't seem like a very permanent job. More of a random job just to pass the time, similar to his stay in Indianapolis. More importantly I think this would be even more pointless than that, since at least in Indy he was doing something football related.

If you put him in charge of general fundraising, it can have a fairly large impact on the university. Same with anything to do with getting back in touch with alumni. He would be out in public and at events stumping for UA.

I do believe a conference change is in Akron's future. But it won't be the Big East.

I guess technically moving to FCS would mean a conference change...

But all joking aside, I always though C-USA was in our future...Big East would have a tough time accepting a 1-win football team

...I still have hopes for an athletic position for Tressel, even though it may be a long shot.

Yeah, hope they cleared this with Coach Bowden.

WKRK reported tonight that Tress helped Akron with it's head coach search. So I gotta think yeah, Coach Bowden is on board with this.

Zach, you hit the nail on the head! He's being hired to whore for $$$, which is all he's either eligible, or capable, of doing at this time. Personally, I'll send my money to the school in Portage Cty. before I'll send a dollar to a school that hires this disgraced ex-Suckeye.

Bowden has come to UA with the attitude that he wants to see the school succeed in every aspect. I don't see any reason why he wouldn't want Tressel to take an administrative job.

Wow, I don't know where to begin. Well, I guess here. Jim Tressel is a University of Akron alum, just like me, and I'll guess you. And whether you like it or not, he is THE biggest college name in Ohio, regardless the title.

And what's not to like about the biggest name in Ohio "Whoring" for money for his alma mater?

Go ahead, send your money to Can't, god knows they need it after the basketball court fiasco. I'm sure Jim Tressel won't have any trouble finding your replacement.
