Hilltopper
I like to see what the other MAC teams fans think about the Zips, so I go look at their message boards. It's pretty much been the same thing over and over this season after the Zips knock them off. Threads are started just like this one, Akron could go undefeated in the MAC next year . I don't care how we do it, I just want to win.
Blue & Gold
Good coaches sometimes will their teams to victory on the road. Dambrot does that. Be happy you have him and not John Groce of OU, who has built one of the league's softest teams. Disgusting. STO's Steve Mix also stated last night that he didn't think OU was a very good road team. It kinda surprises me because John Groce seems like such a fiery competitor.
skip-zip
I can't believe all the teeth gnashing and complaining about the fact that we are 9-1 and in sole possession of first place in the MAC. Seriously! Ha Ha. I was waiting for someone to do that. Hilltopper, even the very best teams, in every sport, pro or college, will have critical discussions among fans. And with 4 of those games going down to the wire, which very easily could have gone the other way, there's a lot to talk about.

Quit being so caught up in how you think we should look and sit back and enjoy the ride. If the greatest golfer in the world hits one into the trees off the tee and then hits the next shot into the hole for an eagle 2, do you think we should focus on the bad tee shot or the great second shot? No matter which, it still goes on the scorecard as a 2. I prefer to look at the fact that in crunch time when it really matters, we took care of business. Blue & Gold
KD still rides Nic & McClanahan in crunch time. He obviously doesn't want to make an issue of their struggles. KD's said in the past (concerning free throw shooting) that sometimes the worst thing you can do is talk about a situation. So he doesn't point out free throw struggles, he just has the team practice them during the natural course of practice. He doesn't want it to get into their heads that, "Man, I'm no good at free throws!" This must be what he's doing with Nic & B-Mac. Neither of them are helping the team at all right now. Hopefully KD's strategy works & they keep their confidence up & snap out of their respective funks. (Nic, IMHO, needs a bit of coaching & needs to be told to get his 6'8" 240 lbs. down in the paint.) If they don't snap out of it, KD will probaby severly limit their PT (especially B-Mac's) during the MAC Tourney. Maybe even sooner (OU, K.e.nt & Buffalo) if KD is serious about winning the MAC East & getting the #1 seed.

You think we win those games against Georgetown? I pray that the players do not have the same attitude you do or it is going to be a short March. Class of 82
My take on last night's game... 1) I give a lot of credit to WMU for taking advantage of the way the game was being called... as in rebounding (especially in the first half) was allowed to be an absolute free-for-all when usually MAC officials won't allow you to even LOOK like you MIGHT have gone over the back. It seemed like we took forever to fight fire with fire, and we got absolutely clobbered on the boards. (Didn't help that we shot a really bad percentage.) 2) I give a lot of credit to WMU for scrapping and clawing like their season depended on this one game. Their point guard, especially, played his behind off, but the big fat dude who looks like the little brother on Orange County Choppers played an amazingly strong game. Their whole team, though, played like they were on a mission. 3) KD did not get out-coached. I thought he did just about everything right once we clawed our way back into the game in the second half. If anything, I thought WMU's coach... and their entire bench... kind of panicked near the end of regulation. In contrast to the WMU bench, you could see KD's and the assistants' confidence, and I think the Zips players responded in kind. While I was nervous at the beginning of OT, I was pretty certain we would win, and I'm just a fan watching on TV. 4) The poke steal by Abreu was one of the most clutch defensive plays I've ever seen a Zip make. How fricking huge was that? 5) We WON!!!! Go Zips!
Blue & Gold
4) The poke steal by Abreu was one of the most clutch defensive plays I've ever seen a Zip make. How fricking huge was that? And his resulting 3 was straight as an arrow, it just rimmed out. Steve Mix even called it good while it was still in the air. Good shot. Great series by AA. Seriously! It's not teeth gnashing and complaining to want more when you know there's more to be had. I'm ecstatic that our Zips are 9-1 in the MAC and in sole possession of the top spot in the MAC, 1 game ahead of Buffalo and 2 games ahead of others. However, I want to see signs of this team really coming together to do better than any other D-1 Zips team has done in March. They're capable of making a run deep into the NCAA Tournament, but they're not showing it. Perhaps I'm asking too soon and should just wait until March. However, I would remind them that it doesn't just happen. It takes effort and hard work. This is Akron and we shouldn't just be satisfied with being best in the MAC. GO ZIPS! RowdyZip
FYI....Valpo has jumped on CSU an the Convocation Center. 25-8, late in the 1st half. If Valpo wins, our "bad loss" disappears, as they'll infiltrate the top 100 RPI.

I agree with you. Furthermore, while everybody should be ecstatic with 9-1, something that has only been done one other time in the school's history in 2006-07. However, that team got to 9-1, for the most part, by playing up to their full potential. This team, even despite the MAC being even stronger now, is 9-1 and hasn't come close to reaching full potential. So far, if not in terms of wins and losses, but in terms of overall performance, this team has underachieved. That's not meant as disrespect to this group, but rather a big show of respect. They are 9-1 despite only playing one great game (and even that one had a 10-minute lull that allowed EMU to get back into it momentarily) in league play. If any other of KD's teams had played like this group, people would be up in arms because the Zips would be maybe 5-5 at best. It just so happens this team has enough talent, so far, where they can play 20-30 minutes of bad basketball then just turn it on and out-talent the competition for 10 minutes and get a win. That can't continue to happen because sooner or later it will catch up to them. How big of a downer would it be knowing that the Akron team best suited to make a run in the tournament, didn't even get there because they never were able to put a full 40 minutes together? To me, more devastating than a Doug Penno banked 3-pointer at the buzzer of a MAC championship game. This team has Sweet 16, or better, talent. They need to learn how to play like a Sweet 16 team. zippy5
Luckily, we don't need to worry about the sweet sixteen for a month or so. KD has a knack for getting his teams to peak at the right time, and i doubt this year will be any different. Bad news for the MAC, we're 9-1 and haven't peaked yet. Good news for us, they're learning how to win close games, and a tournament run doesn't happen without that.
MDZip
Nik 30 min, 0-6 fg, 3 to, 6 reb, 2 pts Brett 14 min, 0-5 fg, 1 to, 0 pts/ast/reb Why were they both in at the end of regulation and in ot? One reason for Brett at at the end of a tight game: #9 in the conference in assist/turnover ratio One reason for Nik: #12 in rebounds per game. Both are good defenders. It isn't always scoring.
