jem101
I was there 40 minutes before tip and didn't see anything. If that happened, it was waaaay before tip. I've seen the Zips do this before once when I showed up an hour before the game for the Can't game.
tpsjugglerdude
They do this before pretty much every game at the JAR this year. It's generally before people get inside the arena. I see no problem with it and it is fun to watch. Tree could have won the NBA dunk contest.

If they add a few passes in the paint, they can have a dunk contest during a game, not just before.
taxpayer
Lumberjack, I care as much as you but take a deep breath and watch the game again. First it's U of Akron. Second of all, the Zips had several players melt in last nights OU heat. Blown defensive assignments led to open shots by OU as did our defensive agression of chasing most of OU's players all over the floor. They spread us out, penetrated and kicked when our help defender had to rotate since we were being beat off the dribble by their pg. They hit their jumpers. What upset me was the number of layups OU made without being made to pay the price of hard closeouts and some hard fouls. Our biggest sin was lack of intensity followed by a low level of battle. Believe me when I tell you OU played like their lives depended on the outcome. We played like it was just another game. Add all that up and add some really bad nights by quite a few of the Zips and you get the outcome we got. We were not a tough team to play against last night; not physically, mentally or defensively. If don't become better defensively we aren't going to win against good competiton.

burrdie
As an alumni and avid follower I am saddened by last night's game. However, right now I am thinking it as a fluke, just to stay positive. Let's see what happens on Wednesday night and let's see what OU does to Can't. Who is to blame for last night? There is enough blame to go around. Either they are a team or they are not, they will have to prove it. As I have said in the past, you cannot KEEP moving guys in and out and expect consistancy and team play, not going to happen, coach! Right now I am not a KD fan at all. Does he have this team under control, disciplined and eager to play and WIN? and be unselfish, I think not. I think not. Not saying any more. Oh one last thing, if AA lets the ball roll down the floor again with 15 min. left to play slap his hands. That is a hot dog play. He was not in the contest this year. I've seen Tree do better dunks then this year's contest (besides the double dunk of course).
burrdie
Estremely well said I applaud you, you are right on target. This is what bothers me more than anything and probably is why I haven't been on this site lately. Prior to ORU the team was almost set with the rotation being key in the way AU could potentially run over teams. The coaching staff decided to change up and returned back to the good old boys lineup and disrupted the order of things. The two games after that also relied on that network but was NOT an issue until the lost last night which makes it very apparent to me and anyone who knows anything about the game. Adding to misery the coaching staff allows for selfish game play from a few players, who wants to pad their STATS, which only adds to a losing mentality playing good teams. All season long the best mult-dementional scorer has not been allow to do what he was recruited to do by not being placed in scoring position, and forced to play out of position because of his athleticism. The best three players have been limited to the least amount of minutes on the team and its not about defense or confidence but a hierarchy that seek unrealistic results. Out of 5 coaches on the bench not one has stepped up and made this observation where a lot of analyst have said the same thing I've been thinking and saying all along. This to me has pissed me off because it doesn't make good logical sense to have a power house and potentially sweet 16 team and not let them play ball. Q and Gilliam play well together and offer a dual treat on the wing, why haven't this been done more? Add Tree and Harney who play well together in their perspective roles and I mean perspective and they add to the dominance adding Zeke and Alex. I like Zeke and he may be a pro but the coaches should have worked on his footwork making him a more dominate presence on the floor on offense ( like Hubbert at GT). Also the team has one of the best inside outside game players in Zeke and Gilliam and this has been ignored all season long with exception of 2 games. Add Q on the other side and you have a dual threat. I've said this before, I saw this team play over the summer and the combination of players who play best together have been used a few times over the season. In fact this combination beat the other players so bad so many times in a summer pick up game that the good old boys got pissed and walk off in frustration (as in being a punk). Thats what they are doing now, walking off when a team really get into and need them. Another thing, if you have a player with a 44 inch vertical that won a dunk contest in high school jumping over 6 people not being put in position for back door cut/alley's is a waste of his talents? If you recruit super athletes let them play a supersize game and those who can't be prepared to come off the bench as role players. Murray state doesn't have a problem doing that and a few other mid majors who are stacked as AU. Unfortunately, when are they going to wake up and put the best players on the floor before or after it is too late. Recognizing that those who know how to win with guts, desire and knowing how to close out games and send a strong message. Meantime until that recognition this is a big fat waste of time...If we are not going to play the best together at the right time then maybe its best that the team get eliminated. That way they can learn from their mistakes and potentially make adjustments in the future. In my opinion there is no way this team should have gotten beat down by Ohio U even on their worst day and I blame this all on a coaching staff that thinks way too small. MDZip
The news collector is even more pessimistic than some on this site. It is only hoping for a home game in the first round (which is not possible since the Zips have already clinched a top three seed). I would hope even the News Collector would have hope that a win clinches the double bye and the number one seed. Which I fully believe will happen, the Bulls are not a good road team (losses at Miami, Ohio and Can't). UA looks to secure a home game in the first round of the MAC Tournament with a senior night win over Buffalo Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the JAR View the full article at www.GoZips.com

Every player who've played the game know to spread the defense and make the offense work harder for the shots like last night. We did a poor job and paid dearly for it. I was heartbreaking because it was on national television where those opportunities are hard for some schools to come by. I talked to one player and he stated that they will be set for the tourney. I have no doubt that they will try but every team for the rest of the season will use this tape and think they can beat UA. Also that he felt the team has no hard feelings about the lost. They are over confident and arrogant which makes for a bad recipe. It would be nice to think they have learned but I don't think so. The team need intensity and the sense of urgency like their lives depend on the win.

Hilltopper
Some of the posters here seem to think that the players are some kind of robots or objects in a video game that the coach can manipulate at will. All they are is a bunch of kids and young adults playing a game. I would love for the Zips to win every game , but sometimes the other team just plays better. Bottom line for me is the reality that they are just human, the coaches too.

zipdiehard
I was reading some of that stuff over there as well. It is amazing how insecure their fans are. One idiot even thought our "Buffalo is in Canada" joke was because we didn't know it was in the U.S.! Of course to them, it is a lame joke, while their "High School" jokes from the 70's are clever. That isn't surprising when they believe they have invented every fan chant, pre game video, and band formation. Some of you that think we are bad at being little brother to OS U should read the posts over there. This actually ties into that other football thread about Akron and the MAC. We should take pride that they waste so much time on us, as winning breeds hatred. If we weren't winning in basketball all the time, they wouldn't be focusing on us. Sunday should have provided a huge wake up call to everybody associated with this team. The have to want it bad and and have the fire to get it done. Sometimes it seems like the guys think that they can just toss their jerseys on the floor and scare the other team into submission. I was actually thinking that getting their butts kicked all over the floor may be good for this bunch in the long run but your post has me worried. Their response vs. a decent and dangerous Buffalo team should tell us quite a bit about this teams character.

I thought about this a while ago and I came to the same conclusion. Ohio fans seem to be the most insecure bunch in the MAC, and this has to be why. In their defense, it's probably annoying when you travel outside of Ohio and tell someone you went to school at Ohio and the response is Oh, so you're a buckeye! Most of the posters there are old farts. They think it's still 1976 and Akron is still Hilltop High. Times are a changin' and they can't handle it.
