LZIp
Only cynics would see this as a bad thing. I mean its not like we have some rowdy atmosphere where there are going to be riots or anything or students arent sneaking in liquor already or anything (oops). Lee Adams
To be fair, financial aid and scholarship monies are being raised in compensation with the tuition/fee raises. While a school like Akron is still RELATIVELY a good bargain, there is still a woeful lack of support for higher education in general. Not everyone can get a scholly or grant. And,many peoplecan not afford to go into debt to attend school. Priorities about where we spend money need to change. Sorry, this is not exactly football. ctmjbowes@sbcglobal.net
Same here. Why it makes such a difference to people whether or not they can drink beer inside the gate puzzles me. I have been trying to lure people to the games through the FANTASTIC food and beverage available at the tailgate and been largely unsuccessful. Now people are interested in coming because they can drink a Budweiser in their seat? Makes no sense to me, but if it draws people in, great. I am one who hated it that I couldn't buy a beer inside the stadium during games. I am an adult with a plethora of entertainment options. I also enjoy getting my buzz on as a part of enjoying many of those recreational activities, especially when driving, riding a motorcycle on one wheel and performing microsurgery on peoples' brains. Actually, I kid about the driving, wheelying and brain surgery things. Anyway, telling people like me that we can't grab a beer or two during the games just simply provides a chilling effect to the proceedings for me, whether or not I choose to have those beers. There is the implication that attendees cannot be adult enough to behave while having a drink, and/or that this is a university event that must stay somehow "cleaner" than other entertainment venues for the good of the students, or that there is just some Bull--it moralistic reason why I shouldn't drink a beer at a football game. In any event, for many many people, the chilling effect is real and it's a downer. College football games are adult entertainment environments, hence the tailgating and outside revelry. You chop off a certain number of potential attendees by clamping down on beer sales. I'm very happy to see that UA has changed this one and would bet that the game day experience will be better and that more adult ticket buyers will now go to games at the Info. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more state funding for higher education, but as long as 75% of the population doesn't value education (look at the state of our country's public schools), funding will only get worse. But more than anything, I think this comes down to why people pursue higher education vs. why higher education exists. Higher education isn't a job factory. If you want a job, get a technical (associate) degree or pursue an apprenticeship. BA, MA, PhD, etc. are for the pursuit of KNOWLEDGE, not a career. Yeah, a career can follow sometimes, but people need to quit generalizing technical degrees and 4-year degrees. Not at all the same. I know everyone doesn't qualify for funding or cannot afford to go into debt to get a degree from The University of Akron or any other university. My response is that those people should take a step back and consider why they're pursuing the degree. Despite what everyone's high school teachers say, not every student is university material. The huge number of unqualified students is part of what drives the price of education higher and higher.
LZIp
The huge number of unqualified students is part of what drives the price of education higher and higher. Im quite curious to hear an explanation for this reasoning. If true, would that not mean a place like Harvard would be cheaper than a place like UA ? When you say that not every 'student'is 'university material',I agree. One group of these 'students' who tend to be visible are athletes. Just like the student body in general, there are athletes who get the opportunity to attend college but are not 'university material'. SOME of them, certainly not all have the privilege of attending college mainly due to their athletic ability, not necessarily their ability to eventually obtain a degree. What then is their objective? Do they deserve the opportunity even though they will likey not obtain a degree? I am not sure. I can say that had I not obtained a 4 year degree I would not have been able to obtain the 'job' that I eventually got. I guess I was 'university material' coming out of high school. But without the degree I would not have had the options that I had.

zippy5
Link Some of you might find this interesting. Indeed. Ever try it? I might have to find somewhere with it next February, just to try it. If I remember by then.
GP1
Indeed. Ever try it? I have not. Normally, I drink to get drunk and I can't drink 15-20 of those style beers. I get too full after a small number.
K92
Link Some of you might find this interesting. I have never seen Pliny the Younger (or the Elder) available for purchase, but would love to try either. I thought I might be able to enjoy one at World of Beer, but no luck. The bartender said those 2 beers are on their most wanted list, but they haven't been able to stock either one. I saw some people at the Cleveland Beer Fest wearing PtY t-shirts, but Russian River Brewery was not there. Again,
Lee Adams
22 out of 120? Still not a high %. Fans who 'drink to get shit faced" are going to do it in the parking lot or in the seats. Doesn't really matter. Just admit its a financial move nothing more. And,while universities continue to preach against alcohol abuse by students which indeed is a problem, make sure to figure out how to reconcile the mixed message. Even if you can 'control'beer sales inside, the people who simply drink to get drunk will enter the stadium drunk and drink more inside. Gonna be interesting to see how the cops handle the first incidents that occur due to embibing a bit too much. By the way I always have a few before I go to the games. scottditzen
I'm sure they've already dealt with drunk fans. Lee Adams
At the Bowl I saw them pull out one kid. I am sure there were some others. There didn't seem to be much of an issue at the Bowl when they startedpumping beer. Significantly,it didn't improve attendance either!
