zipinnc
Do we want any possible transfers from Penn State? If I'm a player that wants to leave, what are my options? Many BCS schools have used all of their scholarships. Do I want to pay for a year to go to a BCS school? Or do I want to go somewhere that I can be an elite player and keep my scholarship benefits? Many different choices and options for these players. Where do we fit in? Let's discuss.
Let'sGoZips94
I was going to start a thread about this. I think it is a very interesting topic and route to go. If I am Bowden, I am calling them and marketing Akron. Here are my selling points: 1) State-of-the-art facilities. 2) You will play. Have you seen our previous records? 3) Help us build something special. 4) If you went to PSU for the tradition, come to Akron and play for Bowden, Amato, and Buckley. Not to mention we have Tressel at the University. I really think this would be a great way to jump start this program.
zestycoyote
I'd love to see some PSU transfers wearing Zips uniforms. The thing is, the players can transfer ANYWHERE with no restrictions. I think that alone puts Akron in a very tough position.

GP1
1) State-of-the-art facilities. 2) You will play. Have you seen our previous records? 3) Help us build something special. 4) If you went to PSU for the tradition, come to Akron and play for Bowden, Amato, and Buckley. Not to mention we have Tressel at the University. #1...He could play in better facilities and has seen better facilities. What we have is nice, but not as nice was what most BCS schools have. #2...Most kids who would transfer to a MAC school would probably start in the Big Ten in front of tens of thousands of people. #3...He could have a building process at PSU as well. #4...Toledo has better tradition. The Bowden name is important to us (unless TB never wins more than five games in a season in one of the next five years, at which point he is doomed) if you believe in that kind of thing. I believe in good coaching and I think TB provides that. Tressel? So what? I think a kid who has lived through this whole mess at psu might be looking for something other than Jim Tressel. He has seen enough "legends". Here is how you sell Akron... Assume marginal BCS player coming to Akron. 1. Potential to win a conference championship. 2. Potential to go to a bowl game. 3. Chance to play right away with a fresh start. That's about all we/MAC offer to a kid who has played at PSU.
akronzips71
I see it slightly differently: No one at PSU right now can ever go to a bowl game. Nor will they get TV exposure. You can bet your Cheerios that the TV networks are going to run away from any PSU games as fast as they can. Yes, there are probably a few commitments they can not break, figure two years from now there will not be any televised PSU games. There is no rebuilding. The unborn (high school seniors this coming season) are the first with a chance at post season. As college seniors. None of this is attractive to someone with a shot at the NFL. PSU is going to be ignored the next few years. They are playing for nothing. Akron does have one asset that can be useful. It is pretty close to State College. Someone with a sweetheart or family in the PSU area could find Akron VERY attractive, as in you can see your girlfriends on weekends and still play Div 1 football. Don't sell it short, we do have a chance to pick up a couple of players, who will indeed play.
ZachTheZip
There are PSU players from NE Ohio who might want to move closer to home. We can also sell transfers on starting right away, where they might end up on the bench at a BCS school. It's really a matter of how many open scholarships we have. TennesseeZippy
Even in this situation, I don't believe that UA is allowed to call another school's players. The players have to initiate the contact. Actually, schools can initiate contact w/PSU players. They must first notify PSU of their interest in recruiting a player, and then they can proceed w/out restriction from PSU. A school not on recruiting sanctions can sign a player and that player would not count against the 85 player limit THIS YEAR, but that scholarship must be deducted from the next year's count. A school that is currently being sanctioned by the NCAA for recruiting violations (i.e. USC), can sign a Penn State player, but they cannot exceed their max scholarships as imposed by the NCAA for their own recruiting violations in order to add a PSU player to their roster. I've attached a copy of the official NCAA guidelines on PSU players' recruitment in case you need any further info. Hope this helps! "if a student-athlete transfers for the fall of 2012 to a school that has reached its scholarship limits, the school may exceed these numbers for the 2012-13 academic year, provided it reduces such limits proportionately in the 2013-14 academic year. For example, if one student-athlete transfers to a Division I school already at the legislated limits of 25 initial counters and 85 overall counters for 2012-13, the school will be limited to 24 initial counters and 84 overall counters in 2013-14." NewZipsFan
Jokes about the quality of Penn State recruits slipping from 4.5 stars... to 0.25 moon rocks? All I can say is that if a "walk on - who was NOT invited to pre-season camp at Akron" has transferred to Penn State - and that player ever sees the field -- they are in much worse shape than I could have ever imagined. Just sayin'....
