jjackson123
After everyone calms down tomorrow, I would love to hear sound reasoning from anyone suggesting that KD should be gone... and your answer has to include ideas for a replacement, because there is nobody in the country who is a better coach that would come here. KD is the best coach/ recruiter in the conference and loves Akron just as much as you and I. He has earned my patience

I'm afraid it might take them a little longer to start playing well this year. One positive note about tonight is that the freshmen got a significant amount of playing time. RootforRoo44
Ask yourself, what is the common denominator? A coach who can never manage the clock and hasn't drawn up a good last second play in his life. We have the ball with 30 seconds to go and we're tied, and we don't even get a shot off?! Embarrassing. He has earned my patience Don't get me wrong, you're probably right on us finding a better coach (i mean who wants to come here?), but what exactly has KD done to "earn" your patience? He hasn't really won anything. Btw, MAC Tournament Championships are fine and dandy, but really, who outside of Akron gives a crap?
Dr Z
A coach who can never manage the clock and hasn't drawn up a good last second play in his life. I've said this for years now. The staff could use an experienced person that can do this.
Derrt
SMH, KD is probably the best Coach Akron could get. Seriously the guy has won MAC-Championships, and went to the dance. Other coaches would have used AKRON as a stepping stone to get to a BIGGER AND BETTER school. Akron fans or the folks on this blog (hating) need to be grateful. I guarantee you once KD does decide to leave this b-ball program will fall drastically.

Dr Z
It always amazes me how any constructive criticism toward KD turns into.."fire him,"..."we can't do better"..."we win 20 games"..."we never win a tournament game" --thread. Why don't Zip fans deserve big wins (not that beating CC would have been a big win)? Is that not what we pay the guy millions for?
GP1
First of all, congrats to CCU. With MUCH less talent than what the Zips put on the floor last night, they put clinic on how to beat the Zips. Every team who plays Akron should watch the film of last night. Some rambling thoughts.... The loss of Q will hurt this team. Let's start with the basics....overall athletic talent. Running fast, jumping and hand/eye coordination. AA can run fast with the ball. There isn't anyone who can keep up with AA and the team overall is much slower and thus, less athletic. Jumping...let's see how we are when suspended players return. Hand/eye...It's there, but I think the team, overall, could use some physical conditioning. Loss of hand/eye corrdination sometimes can be a sign of fatigue and the Zips look more tired at times than they should. Depth. This team is not 10 deep and everyone needs to stop pretending it is. They have 10 guys KD plays, but the base talent isn't there to play that many. The Zips have an 8 man rotation and two guys who should play when in a pinch. Other than that, everyone should enjoy a great seat to watch the game. My favorite Zips is AA. I joked about it last night, but he is just a little chubby from his time off. Needs some exteded workouts and watch what he eats until he is 100%. Was not limping. I think he is one of the players whose eye/hand coordination will be greatly improved with conditioning. He was trying to do some things last night, but his body wasn't keeping up with his mind. Zeke is my second favorite Zip. I don't see improvement in his offensive game this year. This will be a problem because the loss of Q's point have to be made up elsewhere. He'll get points at the foul line and dunks, but not much offensive coordination there. Coastal figured that out early. They doubled early and when they realized there was no threat, they played him straight up and did a good job guarding the perimeter. It's on film now...Lesson learned for the MAC. CCU had this center who was what we called in the old days, wirey (sp?). Sort of this skinny guy who plays his butt off because he isn't very talented. He was 50% talent and 25% hustle and 25% crazy and he played a very good game against Zeke. Even though CCU went on a little run right before half, I think it was 6-0, I really felt the Zips had figured something out. Even thought the game was close, it felt as if the Zips had gained some sort of upper hand againt CCU. CCU did all of the littel things to win the game against a team with better players. Hustle and hard work really paid off for them. Nice new arena for CCU and the crowd, especially the students, were very lively. I think a lot of people are overreacting to the loss last night. There is a looooong time between now and March. My biggest concern is I see more of the same. More of the same does gets a trip to the MAC Finals and a 50/50 shot at the NCAA. Later, more of the same results in a first round NIT or NCAA loss. I understand we had two guys out, but they are part of the more of the same and I took that into consideration when i wrote the previous thoughts. I'm going to go walk on the beach. Have a great day everyone.
Class of 82
A little surprised at how hard some folks are taking this loss. On the road, inaugural game in a beautiful new arena for a scrappy team, a good home crowd, two key guys short and the Zips lose in OT. That's not shocking. Disappointing, sure. But stuff like this is going to happen on the road. It's college basketball, and November college basketball at that. Now we turn the page and look forward to the next game. GO ZIPS! UAZip0510
I'm going to stay positive. - Kretzer and McAdams can and will be an important part of this team immediately. - Abreu's ankle apparently looked fine, just needs to get in shape - There's still plenty of tough opponents left - #16 Creighton, OU (who may be ranked), etc. And I do think this team is deep: C-Marshall PF-Treadwell SF-Gilliam SG-Walsh PG-Abreu F-Harney C-Forsythe F-McAdams F-Kretzer G-Betancourt G-Justice We're going to be just fine... phil
It seems that when we have the ball with a full shot clock to win a game we hold onto the ball until 10 seconds and then the guard dribbling the ball tries a one on one move and forces a shot or we do not get a shot off. Historically, we do not have a good 10 second offense. It happened again last night when we never got a shot off. It is something we need to work on. Dave in Green
@GP1, appreciate your views on seeing this edition of the Zips for the first time. You lost me a little when you described the missing Harney and Treadwell as "more of the same." Most everyone who's seen them play has described them as very different from previous KD players. So I'm not getting the connection with "more of the same." Also, although Rico may not have been obviously limping, this was his first game back from a badly sprained ankle. The fact that he did not start and played only 29 of 45 minutes are clear signs that he was not 100%. The Zips also struggled last season and lost some close games to teams they should have beaten when Rico wasn't 100% after his knee injury and surgery. Melo is longterm backup insurance for Rico, but he struggled in his first real college game with 5 turnovers in 10 minutes -- a lot like Rico in his early Zips games as a freshman. CCU's senior guards are the stars of their team, and they used their skills and experience to advantage over Rico's bum knee and Melo's inexperience. The Zips will improve greatly at the point as the season goes on with Rico's ankle getting healthy and Melo gaining college experience. A disappointing loss, for sure. The Zips could have won this game even after losing Q for the season, even after losing Tree and Nick for 3 games, even after having Rico recovering from a bad ankle sprain, and even after playing 4 freshmen a total of 96 minutes out of 225 available player minutes. That's right -- freshmen accounted for 43% of the PT in this game. It seems like just yesterday that a popular topic of conversation on this forum was how KD never trusted giving freshmen long minutes. Amazingly, freshmen almost pulled this game out of the fire in their first real college game for the Zips. The biggest positive out of this game was the play of Kretzer and McAdams, both true freshmen. Kretzer played more minutes (43 of 45) than any other Zips player, and McAdams wasn't far behind at 34 minutes. Sure they made some freshman mistakes along the way. But their contributions overshadowed their mistakes. Kretzer and McAdams were ready to be major contributors from their very first Zips game as true freshmen, and Melo and Forsythe aren't far behind. We had a glimpse of the next 4 years, and it looks pretty good. When Rico is back to 100%, Tree and Nick rejoin the team, and as the freshmen get more experience, this is going to develop into a really good team. Every year losing OOC games we shouldnt.. Yep. Same crap, different year. I'm sure we'll be one of the last two standing in the MAC, come that Saturday night at the Q, but it stinks watching them crap down their legs against inferior teams. The road to an at large was there this year, can't do it losing to coastal carolina.
Blue & Gold
Disappointing loss. Again. At the start of each season, the Zips always throw a wet blanket on fans. Curb your enthusiasm, "Joe Akron." We'll be good come conference play. But I want to see the Zips dominant out of the shoot. I want a Top 25 ranking. The potential for that is gone now. Unless, of course, we get to 14-1 or 15-1. The hope of an at-large is gone. No way the NCAA selection committee takes a mid-major with a loss to Coastal Carolina. Yes, not having Nick & Tree was unfortunate. Good/great programs overcome circumstances & say, "We won in spite of..." We've got a solid, deep team. We still don't have a stud, go-to player. Exceedingly unfortunate loss. See the rest of you diehards at the JAR on Monday night. Go Zips!
akronzips71
The only thing I think they should have done different at the end was have Pat F in the game, GO BIG, get an inbounds alley oop try. They have the height, that would be the time to use it. The entire team looked out of shape. At the end Zeke was not running the court. AA looked - chubby- time for some wind sprints! Big Zip
Terribly depressing start to a season but at this point I've gotten used to it. So I'm not getting the connection with "more of the same." CCU is not a good team. Suspended players should not have mattered. More of the same. Zips pooping their pants n the clutch. Offense with guys standing around. No meaningful improvement YOY in key players(s). Losing easily winnable ooc games. I will say this next one as nicely as possible so I don't hurt anyone's feelings...KD was absolutely terrible last night and should give his salary for this week back....I hope he enjoyed his trip to the beach because he didn't do much else while down here. $500K a year? More waiting for the Mac to start so we can get excited about the mAC Tournament. None of this has to do with suspended players. I hope I'm wrong, but this programs looks stale to me. KD could have shaken his staff up some last year and decided not to. New ideas produce new strategies. The same old ideas produced more of the same. CCU was so much better prepared for us than we were for them it wasn't even funny. I know we are not supposed to talk about Q, but his loss is a huge problem. He just wasn't a player, he was a key player.
