Zips Media Day featuring Tree

Blue & Gold

"The face plastered on billboards throughout the area and the wrap-around ads in the Beacon Journal reveals an heir apparent has risen to prominence for the University of Akron basketball team. Senior forward Demetrius Treadwell will see his profile upped significantly this coming season, but that’s not nearly as important as what effect he will have on the team."

Finally, someone is getting it.

PS With the B&W graphics, "Back The Zips" is starting to grow on me.

“We have our hands full and we have to be better earlier than we’ve ever been,” Dambrot said. “Because we’ve been pretty bad early and we really have to do a good job of getting ourselves ready to play earlier.”

True true true. The "Backing the Zips" campaign won't be nearly as effective with a 3-6 start as it will be with a 7-2 start.

Sidenote: At what point is the charade that Harney and Tree are seniors end? Everyone knows they will be in a Zips BB uniform next season.

Maybe writers are hedging their bets knowing that paperwork needs to be filed properly in order for that to happen.

The NCAA distinguishes between seniors and 5th year seniors in its Summary of NCAA Regulations – Division I:

(g) If you are entering your fourth year of collegiate enrollment, you must have completed successfully at least 60 percent of the course requirements in your specific degree program and you must present a cumulative grade-point average (based on a 4.000 scale) that equals at least 100 percent of the institution's overall cumulative grade-point average required for graduation. For this purpose, a student-athlete's grade-point average will be certified on a term-by-term basis. [bylaws 14.4.3.2 and 14.4.3.3]

(h) If you are entering your fifth year of collegiate enrollment, you must have completed successfully at least 80 percent of the course requirements in your specific degree program and you must present a cumulative grade-point average (based on a 4.000 scale) that equals at least 100 percent of the institution's overall cumulative grade-point average required for graduation. For this purpose, a student-athlete's grade-point average will be certified on a term-by-term basis. [bylaws 14.4.3.2 and 14.4.3.3]

As a Nonqualifier.

(2) You will have three seasons of eligibility after your first academic year in residence. You may earn a fourth season of competition provided you complete 80 percent of your baccalaureate degree before beginning your fifth academic year of enrollment and you are within five years of your initial, full-time collegiate enrollment. [bylaw 14.3.3]

Can we agree that listing Tree as a senior, without any reference to the likelihood that he'll be gaining a 4th year of athletic eligibility, is a tad misleading?

Not going "jupitertoo" here, George. Just making a comment.

good, maybe other teams will be dumb enough to believe this is their last season!

Unless of course the NBA comes knocking on Tree's door.

The guy LOOKS like an NBA player!

He has the physical tools to be an NBA player. Quincy Diggs, however, is the player that reminds me the most of how an NBA player should look. Q just has that drive to be the best that you feel when you speak to a professional athlete.

I don't know. There were a few games last year we were way down, and Tree just took over and refused to lose.

If he can keep that desire all year, both he and we are going to be very very good.

I kinda believe u may be right. The articles say with a good season he may have a chance to play at the next level after this season. Lets hope he does.

As much as I love Tree, he isnt ready for the NBA. He still needs a lot of polishing on the offensive end before he thinks about making that jump. He needs 2 more years at UA.

Maybe u will feel different after this season. I was simply repeating what the media said...let's just wait and see. I think you may need to really pay attention to the players coming out of college. They're drafting more on upside these days anyway.

The Most Important Tree in Akron Keeps Growing

by RYAN ISLEY on NOVEMBER 1, 2013

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No – it’s Tree!

If you are driving around Akron, don’t be surprised to see the face of Demetrius “Tree” Treadwell when you pass by billboards throughout the city. It’s just part of the University of Akron’s “Back the Zips” campaign for the 2013-14 basketball season. But don’t worry – while the 6-foot-7 senior forward likes the idea of the campaign, he doesn’t see that as added pressure heading into the season.

“It’s a really good feeling, a really good honor. When I saw it, I was like ‘that’s me’,” Treadwell said at Zips media day. “I really don’t feel like there is any pressure besides handling myself day in and day out and being the best person I can be.”
