Because we are not a patsy who will roll over and play dead for them. Hilltopper is exactly correct. Between getting a huge payday in either cash or 3 or 4 return games plus that almost slam dunk guarantee, yes, Ole Miss would venture to South Carolina. Coaches love to keep their jobs and they are not prone to sticking their head in a vice. Playing Akron on the road is suicidal.
Dave in Green
Really, it's a little surprising that Ole Miss would reward Coastal Carolina's game in Oxford last season with a return game in Conway this season. I can understand why a big school wouldn't want to risk playing at the JAR against a dangerous Zips team. But it's unusual for a big school to play on the road at any small school, even one like CC that doesn't represent much of a challenge for Ole Miss. This is the exception and not the rule. GoZips
Coastal Carolina beat us last season. I wouldn't be so fast to call them a "slouch" I had the opportunity to watch the last five minutes of last year's game this evening. Can you say "homer"? The Zips got "homered" by the officials; including a MAC official. Oh, btw, I watched this in one of the coach's office. Fair calls, Zips win. You figure it out. Remember, the Zips did not have Treadwell or Harney for that game.

We should have beat them, but they weren't a slouch.
Dave in Green
@LZip, most teams would have trouble at Coastal Carolina if their two starting forwards were ineligible to play and their starting point guard and backup wing were hobbled with ankle and knee injuries. CC had a season record of 14-15 against teams that were playing at a lot closer to full strength than the Zips were in that game.

Should be a big crowd.

Dave in Green
I give last season's Coastal Carolina team credit for being a sub-.500 team that played their best game in an emotional effort at their new arena opening to beat in overtime a decimated Zips team that they would have had little chance to beat at full strength. This season's CC team is ranked by TeamRankings as #248 in the country while the Zips are #80. Why shouldn't Zips fans feel confident? It would be a shocking result if the highly motivated Zips don't soundly defeat the Chanticleers at the JAR.
Dr Z
#248 in the country while the Zips are #80.248!?!? Ball State, BG and Central Mich are ranked way down there for reference. This would indicate a double digit point spread to me, no? KD is usually pretty good at covering cupcakes at home.
Dave in Green
No point spread yet, but TeamRankings does project the odds of the Zips beating CC at 92%. By the way, stat guru Ken Pomeroy offered high praise for TeamRankings' preseason rating system in his blog: Pre-season ratings have been posted for the upcoming season. When I first started doing these before the 2011 season, I thought I was pretty awesome. It was kind of a big deal to get every team’s lineup data, mix in some limited recruiting info, and produce a rating that wasn’t laughably horrible. But then Hanner came along with his lineup-based approach and TeamRankings did something that is probably fairly sophisticated, and my preseason ratings became the simplest algorithm possible without being a complete joke. Dr Z
No point spread yetNo line on the game at all? WTF? How is it that there is a line on YSU vs Kennesaw State (whoever that is), but no Akron line??? Makes me go postal.

How is it that there is a line on YSU vs Kennesaw State (whoever that is), but no Akron line??? Makes me go postal. I’ve been trying to find a line as well, but it’s no dice. I can only draw one conclusion from that: The houses don’t want any part of this game. Maybe they’re afraid that no matter how high they put the spread, there would be a good chance of the Zips covering?

Derrt
Saw some great things, saw some bad things. Offense is coming together. We definetly have a problem at the PG Spot. I like Evans offensively, I prefer Carmelo on defense. Turnover City baby (Dick Vitale vocie) Diggs with 6 I believe, overall he played well. Harney & Tree did a great job attacking, Pat has to get tougher. Akron's Basketball IQ slipped a lot in second half.
Dr Z
We definetly have a problem at the PG Spot. I like Evans offensively, I prefer Carmelo on defense. This is troubling. PG was my biggest concern going into the season. We will make no noise in March if the staff can't figure this out. Unofficially, I'm putting Akron 0-1 ATS, even though there wasn't one (officially).
