Game #8 Ball State

I don't think it's the show's responsibility to ask "tough" questions, per se.. That's on the media. George, what the heck is going on with our QB situation?

It isn't a tough question. It is the most basic, elementary piece of information on the mind of every Zips football fan -

Is Kyle Pohl healthy, and if so, when will he return? Why no mention of his health progress? Has he lost his job to Woodson?

This is basic, basic stuff. If you are interviewing an NCAA Division 1 Head Football Coach you address this issue.

Remember on Bewitched when Darrin #1 got replaced by Darrin #2? And everyone knew it was a different Darrin, but Samantha acted like it was the same guy? That's what I feel like...there's a new starting QB and everyone is pretending like nothing happened.

Before the taping of the show, Bowden and Joe Dunn discuss what the content of the show will be. The show is designed to make the program and the HC look good so I doubt you are going to see any criticism of either. All the footage is provided by the university and Joe's job is to ask leading questions so the coach can get his message across. This show is not independently produced but is just a marketing platform by UA. When was the last time you heard a tough question on this type of program? Never.

When "What's Kyle Pohl's status?" is considered a "tough question," I laugh.

Fair enough.. Which makes it more mind blowing that our beat writer has nothing for us. It's not like it's our punt returner being replaced, it's the freaking QB, help us out George.

Why would anyone connected with the Zips program want to broadcast an official statement on which Zips QB BGSU should focus on preparing to face until the last possible moment?

It would be nice for me to know so I can decide whether or not to be in front of my TV next Tuesday.

BINGO!! And that is how all Coaches shows are and how they should be. It is promotional and is meant to be positive not negative or controversial. The place to ask the types of questions around strategy, personnel, etc is the press conference after the game.

One final Ball State game comment. BSU blows. This includes the president on down to the parking attendants.

Trying to park at the game was nearly impossible. First the cops lied as to when we all could get in and then the attendants lied and were pricks as to where we could park..

Not to mention we had to wait until 11 am to get in. They made us drive out and around since we were early and once in the lot, they parked us 300 yards from the stadium.

By the time we set-up to grill, it was 11:40.

Hats off to UA for letting those who come early to park where they want. Next time BSU comes to UA, I would park those a-holes at the Rubber Bowl and make them walk.

The host of the show has zero input as to the content of the show. He is a paid announcer who is given a script to follow. It's the way that every coaches show is done. It's not 60 Minutes.

Well, if the host cannot get us simple information about the status of the QB of a D1 program, the show isn't worthy of my time. I will pass.

Stop talking like a sane person. It has all gotten so strange in a two week period it's hard to even describe.

Want to have the craziness reinforced? Send a note to a friend out of state describing exactly what is going on and wait for their reaction. I did. The person thought I was making up the story.

The status is clear. Pohl can play and they don't want him playing because they think an exciting, turnover prone QB is better. Pohl's days at Akron are over. I'm more interested in why they are over. That's the real story. It's all very strange.

I’ve been pretty busy since I got back from Muncie, but here are a few observations after reading some of the most “shot-from-the-hip” commentary I’ve ever seen on ZNo:

  1. Ball State has quite a nice tailgating atmosphere. It was almost as if there were more people tailgating than those who eventually attended the game.
  2. Woodson’s 4 picks need no further attention in terms of their immediate and drastic impact on the 2nd half, but Amani Davis’s muffed punt was an incalculable momentum switch. Mizell had just leveled Edwards (it was even more impressive in person) causing the Zip sideline to erupt with much needed hope. All that hope was gone in less than 60 seconds. Maybe it’s time to stick Drew Philips back for punts and kickoffs. He looks very comfortable in that role. I’m tired of holding my breath when the other team is punting.
  3. Of course 4 INTs will kill your chances of winning every time, but Tyler Williams and Andrew Pratt simply have to catch those deep balls. The one to Williams was underthrown due to the strong headwind, but he made the necessary adjustment (the hard part) but dropped the ball (the easier part) as he was falling to the turf. Pratt’s ball was laid right into his hands – in fact I didn’t realize he hadn’t caught it until he stood up without the ball.
  4. With Hundley having another fine outing and DJ Jones willing and able to spell him, maybe it’s time to move Chisholm to slot receiver for the remainder of the year. He has better hands than some of the guys playing there and his speed just might provide somewhat of a deep threat.
  5. You could certainly see Woodson’s confidence rapidly erode with each new misstep. I could be wrong, but it’s hard for me to imagine him shaking this off any time soon. It’s a shame because he played a really good 1st half.
  6. At the risk of being branded a loser or a Bowden apologist, I can’t help but frame the Zips current 4-4 (2-2) record against the backdrop of 30+ years of D1 gridiron frustration. People generally like to see improvement in a linear fashion. Unfortunately, that’s typically not the case. Improvement in areas such as athletics tends to follow more of a “stock market like” ascent, with the temporary setbacks being difficult to swallow. The mysterious QB situation is concerning and hopefully things will be cleared up very soon in this regard. Regardless, this team has everything left to play for in 2014. I’m more than willing to see how things transpire before concluding anything about this season or about this staff.

Joe Dunn is a lightweight, company man. Always has been. Always will be .He needs his job. As far as the rag called the BJ(for good reason) why would anyone ever expect anything more from a first rate second rate newspaper?

I'm actually, I'm looking for value in my stock, both short and long term. Stocks aren't about what you have done. They are about what you think a company will do. A good stock analyst is an expert in their field and understand when to buy and sell one based upon current conditions and past experience in an industry. They know the signs of a failing stock and react accordingly. If we Zips fans understand anything, it is losing and the impact of losing.

Losing short term impacts everything you need to attract good players long term....winning. If we get destroyed by BG next week, they remain the best capable in the MAC East to attract good players. Solich won't be down for long at OU....Hell, they proved to be better than us this year. Bowden has put the program in a horrible long term and short term position. Losing keeps you out of bowl games, which is another reason to sell. Losing makes your program less marketable to the general public in addition to recruits. In a world where people buy, sell or hold stocks, this losing may be causing a lot of people to sell their Bowden stock and maybe for good reason. It could be at its high point right now. Stocks don't always go up. Sometimes people within companies make such bad decisions that the stock never recovers.

I've sold some of my position in Bowden and have made a good profit. If they lose next week I'll sell some more with the amount being dependent upon how bad we lose and I'll probably still make some money. After that, I'll probably hold the remainder unless we don't win a game the rest of the season. I probably won't be buying any Bowden stock next year. At this point, if the stock goes to zero, I've made money overall so I can write the loss off. Too bad I can't write the past 25+ years off.

Yep. I took it the other way. I figured Hilltopper had a little bit of the old "inside information". ;)

That was definitely my concern. It's pretty bizarre, but I don't think ANYONE on here has a real handle on this. The usual Tuesday presser must not be happening this week, so we might have to wait a while.

Or you could be missing out on a big run-up due to insufficient research from the street.

I've lost a lot of confidence in my GP1 stock. Lot of blowhard, but very little substance.

Just who exactly would you have here over Bowden? Who exactly could do here what Bowden has done so far? (I'll go cue up the crickets).

LOL….no kidding. People have gone crazy here. In typical Akron fashion…..the glass is half empty. We are 7-4 in our last 11 games. The Pitt victory is forgotten, close games at Michigan and Penn State forgotten….unfortunate losses to Ohio and BSU but not the blowouts they have been.

The fact that we are in 2nd place playing for a chance to take the lead over BG has been clouded by someones conspiracy theory that TB does not play Pohl because can't play "Bowden Ball". No facts around that…. just speculation that has gone viral on here. Speaking of crickets Balsy….we will likely hear them at Infocision for the rest of the year. Good luck getting good recruits with that.

Using the buying and selling of stock to compare firing a coach????? LOL……If such a thing could be done, I would buy every share of TB you own GP1 and in a year or two enjoy my profits between a couple of palm trees on a tropical island.
