ZippyRulz
We only shot 6 free throws and we scored 82 points! And we gave up 83. We needed to draw more fouls to put their scoring butts on the bench.
zipnetter55
The foul shot disparity is troubling, but that's what happens when you are primarily a 3 pt shooting team. Deji is about our only player who drives to the hoop(Gladden to some extent when he is in).I am on record previously as a strong K.D. supporter, but I don't understand why Deji didn't get more minutes-he was the only threat to drive, plus he was hitting from outside. The time for experimenting with lineup changes is over-olay our best 5 more minutes. Also Reggie was hitting on the 3 ball, but barely saw the court most of the second half. When this team scores over 80 pts they should never lose in the MAC.
Sportsjunkie330
Deji played more minutes (22) than his season average (18).
Dave in Green
Deji's assignment is to bring high energy off the bench, which he does well. He played just 9 minutes in the first half but was 6-6 from the field. He played a higher than average 13 minutes in the second half -- second only to Noah's 14 minutes -- and was 2-5 from the field. Part of Deji's effectiveness is based on the change of pace he brings to the Zips offense. Coach Dambrot tries to use each player in the way he believes their individual skill set will best contribute to the team. If he thought having Deji start and play longer minutes would result in better results for the team, you can bet he'd be doing just that. OU Dude
I really think we beat OU in this category. It was very close though.Akron's bench defintely beats Ohio's but I don't think its even close in comparison. Treg Setty and Isaiah Johson have similar stats as do Stevie and Deji, but that's where it ends for Ohio, they only have 3 more available scholarship players and none of them see the floor much, if at all. There's nobody available this year that comes close to being able to contribute like Kretzer or McAdams. Akron's bench went 6 deep and scored 44pts in 93 minutes, Ohio's bench went 3 deep and scored 16pts in 42 minutes. Advantage Akron. The Zip's might have been victims of their own success- by getting hot from the outside they weren't forced to push the ball inside and get Ohio into foul trouble. This had a double negative impact for the Zips because it kept them off the foul line and it kept Ohio's bench players on the bench. Campbell is foul prone and in games where Ohio has struggled he and/or Ndour have gotten into foul trouble early and been forced to sit. Setty is the only servicable F replacement off the bench and his skill set is a big drop off from those two. After that its sophomore Wadley Mompremier who averages 8 minutes and 1.5pts/gm and graduate transfer Chandler Thomas whose been on the floor a total of 1 minute this year. If I'm Dambrot I'm running kamikazis at Campbell and Ndour early and often in the return game and forcing the issue.BobcatTV put together a game recap video, it's obviously heavy on the Ohio highlights but there's some Akron highlights in there too-
skip-zip
Beyond the 0 for 6 from the line, which could have resulted in 2 more opportunities since they were front ends of one and ones, there was one other things that really surprised me about this game....OU had 3 guys play more than 30 minutes (N'Dour played 40), in an up-and-down-the-court shootout. Meanwhile, Akron didn't have a guy play more than 29 minutes. And most of the rest of the team played far less. With that in mind, I was shocked that OU seemed to gain steam throughout the 2nd half, up until that last minute or so.
1981 grad
Whether Deji should start or not:We had this same discussion last year with Q. KD liked bringing Q off the bench and did it for about half the season. I hated it because he was too good not to be a starter. Tree was the only consistent scorer in the starting lineup and when he was off we started bad. KD finally made Q a starter and we played much better and he stayed a starter. When you look at Dei's stats, he deserves to start and get more time! He and Pat are leading the team in foul shot attempts. There is something wrong when we only get to the line 6 times during the game. We need more guys driving to the basket and less three point shooters.Give Deji the start tonight and see it improves the team. When he is the second leading scorer he should not be sixth on the team in minutes. He plays good defense. When he scores 13 points in 5 minutes and has a career high he should start the next game. Kretzer has player 456 minutes this season and has attempted 20 foul shots. Deji has played 399 minutes and attempted 77 foul shots. Reward the senior with the start tonight. He is the perfect player to come off of the bench.... that must be why KD gives him his 18 minutes a night with the 2nd unit. I don't know what stats jump out that say "Start Deji." You point out that he and Pat lead the team in FT's and something is wrong when the Zips only take 6 FTs in a game, Deji played the 3rd most minutes vs OU and only got to the line once.Everyone has a role on a team, just because Deji started 6-6 vs OU doesn't immediately change his role to a starter 22 games into the season. Deji's job is to provide a spark off of the bench and he does that pretty well.
LZIp
I really think we beat OU in this category. It was very close though.+1Best wing defender, best on the team in FG% outside of post players, 2nd leading scorer (with only 18 mins/game), best athlete on the team, and shoots the 3 at a respectable rate (better than one of our so called "specialists" who is starting ahead of him). Really a complete player. With all that said, 6th most minutes per game on our team. Name me another program whose best or 2nd best player on the team plays 18 minutes a game. KD must be smarter than every other coach in America. I guess as long as he's bringing energy off the bench, though. And for the record, I'm not necessarily against him coming off the bench, but the fact is he needs more minutes. For all those who want to bring up Q last season, he averaged 30 minutes a night.Looking forward to more losses against lesser opponents. I hardly mention it any more since it will be lasting until 2023. I try to ignore it and take a little nip of the "KD knows best Green Kool-Aid." Aaaaahhhh, yeah, that hits the spot. Go Zips! I felt if we had the horses to go 11 deep we should play a more uptempo game. But after watching Deji go off and not get rewarded for it, I've finally seen the light. Screw getting guys experience for experience sake, play the best guys as long as they can go.
Blue & Gold
To gain an advantage by going 11-deep, you've got to play a fast-break, run-n-gun offense and a full-court press, high-pressure defense (ala, vintage Arkansas' "40-minutes of hell").We don't employ either, so going 11-deep is no advantage at all. IMO it essentially just prevents any one player from really getting into a groove.

So I stand corrected.

Now we will see if changing the DATE, unexpectedly, will mess up some people. I don't know if I have ever seen that, beyond the flexible Fri./Sat. that they put on the season-ending Ken+ game. The first problem would be that everyone currently has tickets that are marked for the 28th. So unless they pay very close attention to Zips news, they will miss the game, for sure. Secondly, I have family and friends who I know set their work and/or business travel schedules to accommodate a Saturday night game. I'm going to really upset some people when I tell them that they are going to miss this game by flying back into town on Friday evening.
