I feel like I'm reading a bunch geezers right now (I really do mean the affectionately) :P But I've touched on this before...Students also work a lot more today, while in school, than they ever did before.

Watch it Balsy. I'm told that the 50s are the new 20s. ;)

Just for the record, I worked a lot when I was in school. And most people I know were doing the same thing.

I was talking to some friends the other day about our teenagers….A few of us had boys who had turned 16 last year and didn't seem real anxious to get their drivers licenses (which is OK by me). We joked about how each of us, when we were young, got our drivers licenses on THE DAY we turned 16 and how liberating it was. We scratched our heads trying to figure out what had changed with our boys.

The answer we came up with was in our day if you wanted to do something - i.e.. hang out with buddies, play games, attend a game, etc…..you had to go somewhere.

Today, with the internet, XBOX, PS4, Twitter, Facebook, video messaging, iPhones, iPads, etc……………you really don't have to go anywhere for entertainment - you can have food delivered to you and stay in the comfort of your home, dorm or wherever you might be. Kinda sad.

How much was a car's cost back then compared to inflation? How much was gas to fill it up? Maintainence/upkeep? Some of these new cars, you can't easily change the oil yourself and that's by design.

These days, kids have bills before they graduate high school. Phone bills, Netflix subscriptions, XBox subscriptions. That's like $75/month. Why would kids want to add car payments on top of that, especially if they're going to be living on a campus for a few years where everything is within walking distance or has shuttle service?

Car payment? I don't think any of us could get approved for a car payment at 18 yrs. old making $3 per hour. We bought junkers with cash.

I'm willing to acknowledge that 2015 college is more expensive, even in today's dollars, than it was in 1980. But I think we are going way overboard with all of this "people didn't need to work jobs back then" or "kids can't afford cars like you guys did".

Heck, I have to say that it sounds a little silly to be paying for Netflix and Xbox subscriptions, while not even caring if you have transportation. How do students visit family on long weekends and holidays these days?

Prioritize!!! ;)

Those are two different budgets. The team itself and the marketing department have different budgets.

You are correct, but who sets the men's basketball marketing budget? In governmental/non-profit accounting there can be restricted funds (interest on principal can only be spent - think endowment), temporarily restricted funds (ex- I will donate 5 million dollars, but only to go towards a new business school). However, both of those funds come from donors. I highly doubt anybody is donated funds to be used specifically for men's basketball marketing.

My point is that the men's basketball marketing budget 99% likely comes from a general fund that is set from the AD or whoever. Meaning the U has full control of the budget. I get that, in the end, the promotion didn't end up costing much. But I think setting an amount of 800/avg with a MAC title on the line with games against Toledo and OU was a reasonable guess beforehand. Meaning the U was willing to spend ~16000 on the promotion. I think thats a fair estimate. Which takes me back to my main point that IF (not saying it is because I don't know, just what I've heard on here) the men's basketball budget is stopping the team from winning games because we can't make reasonable travel plans, we need to set priorities.

No. Just trying to rationalize why kids don't go out and support their teams nowadays when there are more students living on a nicer campus now than in the past.

Because there are other better, easier options. UA needs to figure out how make the game experience better than sitting at home and watching it on ESPN3 in HD. This problem isn't limited to just UA.

Well, that's the problem, of course. They find sitting at home as a better option than going to their school's basketball game. But, there's plenty of schools that don't have to put on a Broadway Musical at halftime and during timeouts to draw fans, and many of them are not on a 10 year run of far more victories than defeats.

You've pinpointed the problem. But I think it has a lot more to do with the culture of UA's students not taking enough pride in UA sports, rather than a lack of entertainment value in the basketball arena.

I got my license the day I turned 16. I'm only 23, so we had Xbox, Playstation, iPhone, all that good stuff. Way to generalize though.

Hardly any students are sitting at home watching the game on ESPN3 rather than going to the game. They aren't watching at all.

I just looked at Sunday's Beacon Journal and saw and ad for the Canton Charge Fridays game. They are having Mascot Mania and giving out 500 T shirts for Friday's game.

What is our AD, Tom Wistercell doing to promote Monday's Game?

It's a joke. Season ticket holders haven't even received an email about game time ....or even the fact that there is a game!

I received a phone call on Friday (and I think an e-mail I've since deleted) from my IMG ticket rep that there was a game Monday - time TBA and reminded me that I had already paid for the tickets in my season package.

I don't know if the MAC allows it, but they should discount the GA tickets for the first round to encourage attendance to this "short notice" scheduled game. Of course you would still need to communicate that somehow to the masses.

Maybe they can get an ad in the ABJ on Wednesday

2,500 at the game tonight.

I am pretty sure that this game could have been promoted better. I wonder how many season ticket holders didn't know about the game? I know I still didn't receive a call or email that there was a game. It'll be interesting to see how hard they push for tickets Wednesday (and beyond).

Also, can anyone shed some insight on why no loud music, lights off during intros, etc? I'm guessing it is because it is a tournament game but i found it odd. What's the point of home games if its treated like a neutral site game? Money (i.e. cost to play Round 1 at the Q?)

I don't think there were more than 2,000 tops at the JAR. Plenty of blue seats open, but, because they were sold as part of the season ticket package, they count.

I did get an email last Friday after the Can't State game and another one after the women secured the 3 seed that confirmed the 7 PM starting time.

As far as the noise and the intros, it is a tournament thing. I guess they were also out of sponsor freebies and t-shirts.

We also noticed they didn't even have any of the young kids under the baskets with water for the refs. Even Coach was surprised, as he walked down under the basket as he does every game to shake their hands and there was no one there.

Even the band didn't play every second of every time out.

Sweet.

There is a long list of "does and don'ts" when you are hosting a league or NCAA tournament event. You noticed a few of them. You may have missed it but there was no Zips Sponsor advertising on the media boards, no contests on the floor during media timeouts, etc. It has been this way for many years but we haven't noticed the rules since we have gone straight to CLE in past seasons.

I was called and emailed (twice), I think season ticket holders knew about the game. You wouldn't be a season ticket holder and not have a pulse on what's going on with the team.

Monday is just about the worst day for a basketball game, especially when it's held at the JAR.

And for God's sake, it was on the same night as The Bachelor finale !!!

I'll say this....For a small crowd, I actually felt a lot of involvement from the fans. There is something to be said for the fact that we should judge crowds by quality and not quantity. When there is 5,000 people in the place, and only 1,000 of them are interested in the game, that tends to stick out.

I wonder how many people were really there last night, when you know that ALL season tickets were automatically counted as attendance.

I don't know about the rest of the season ticket holders. But in my package of tickets received before the start of the season I received a ticket that said: Zips Basketball vs. Opponent TBD Mid-American Conference Tournament Opening Round (if necessary) Monday, March 9, James A. Rhodes Arena. I know we're not used to using these. But the minute the Zips lost to Miami I knew when and where I was going to be using that ticket.

I agree with Skip that the smaller than hoped for crowd that showed up for the NIU game was noisier and more enthusiastic than many larger crowds I've seen at the JAR. Maybe it had something to do with the type of fans who came vs. the ones who stayed home. Maybe it also had something to do with not having the band playing so loudly all the time and no gimmicky contests being held on the court. Everyone who just wanted to see pure basketball without all the frills was free to make as much noise as they wanted whenever they wanted without interruption. What a novel idea. ;)

Maybe I have a ticket rep that isn't as good as others?

I knew about the game because I follow the team and know what's going on. Not all season ticket holders do I am sure. My point is, if they aren't reaching out to ALL of the ticket holders, imagine what they are missing for people that don't already have tickets.

I did receive an email from my ticket rep today though telling me about a pre-party at the Winking Lizard this week and where to buy tickets for the tournament.
