Latest info on lack of Bowl eligible teams. NCAA meeting today to discuss options. 6-6 may be good enough.

With two weeks left in the season, there are only 71 bowl-eligible teams -- those with at least six wins. The possibility remains that some bowls may have to take sub-.500 teams to fill out the bowl landscape now largely left unregulated by the NCAA.

But isn't it cool to know we are actually one of them? With LZip's analysis it looks like 9 more teams could actually make it and hopefully that ends the debate. It would tick me off to no end if they decided to let 5 win teams in at the expense of those that are bowl eligible. I hope they make the ruling that sub 500 teams can only be taken if the bowl eligibility pool has been exhausted, so I am rooting for those other nine teams to make it. That should make it moot.

I have a hard time imagining that they would let a 5-7 team go if it meant having a 6-6 team stay home. if they are forced to take a 5-7 team or teams it will only be after all 6-6 and better teams are selected.

My question is how much control would Akron have over which bowl they go to? If there are only 77 or 78 eligible teams for the 80 spots that would mean that at least three or four bowls are looking for a team, if the Zips were the last eligible team remaining would Akron then get to pick which vacancy they'd like to fill? If that would be the way it works, should they select based on location, date, opponent, or something else?

I don't see being allowed to pick your bowl happening, but to entertain your question I think its a mixture of two..

I'm going 1a) - your opponent. You want to give yourself the best chance to win as possible at this point in the program's history.

1b) the location. Playing the game in FL against a team we have a similar shot in beating instead of playing in Boise would be more valuable to the program for recruiting purposes since that is an area we target/have players from.

That's the part that would suck, big time.

If they allow under .500 teams to be considered "eligible", because they feel that they need a larger pool to fill all of the bowl games, then does that give the bowls the option to choose whoever they want from that pool? Regardless if it's a 5-7 team, or a 6-6 or 7-5 like Akron?

Gosh, lets sure hope not. Because, I'm sure the Bowl Committees will choose a NAME team with a fan base over Akron, if they can weasel their way into getting that option. You have to remember that these low level bowl games are anxious to do anything possible to get attendance, please advertisers, and make some money.

Would love to get another crack at Marshall and set up for the scheduled game next season !!!! ................. And would LOVE to see a big game scheduled in the open slot for 2017 (Penn St, Iowa St and APP St currently) and Iowa St and Nebraska currently in 2018 !!

NO CUPCAKE OUT OF CONFERENCE GAMES !!!

That's a pretty tough OOC schedule for 2017 as it is and since the Zips will need a home game with likely no return visit, it looks like another FCS opponent will be in the works. I'm OK with one cupcake. :-)

I'm pretty sure we can find an FCS game that isn't a cupcake game ................. It will help the strength of schedule in our 2016 National Championship run !!!!

IMHO, that is the worst combination. I don't mind one cupcake, but if you're going to go that route make sure it's certifiably digestible. :) There's a rather long history of UA having some difficulty with I-AA/FCS teams from the upper echelon, and some sadly not even from that group (the infamous OT loss to Gardner-Webb in 2010 and getting torched by the Delaware State Hornets 52-26 in 1987 stand out) . We were stretched by JMU just a few years ago (will be glad to play them as a member of the FBS). I see nothing to gain from this strategy - I'd rather play another Sunbelt/C-USA team instead of one from the Missouri Valley or CAA.

You see nothing to gain in having a full schedule of quality out of conference opponents in our National Championship run in 2016 ???? ;) ..................... It was a joke

And how do you make your point using games played by has been's in 2010 and 1987 ? There are no players or coaches even at Akron from that time LOL

Cmon man ............ Lighten up :CK_brew:

Sorry for the misinterpretation  It was easy to see that the last part of your post was intended to be humorous, but that wasn't as obvious (to me anyway) with the first part. I think I'll take your advice:
