The positive trend on defense continued last night.  Some lapses in the first half, but by and large a solid defensive outing.

Zero minutes for Mike Hughes and Aaron Jackson last night.  I expected Jackson's minutes to decrease but when KD said he was going deeper for stronger D, I thought we might see more of him.  As for Hughes, he's either still hurting or getting back into shape, or has surprisingly fallen completely out of the rotation.

Pogo Stick Poke keeps swatting them out of the sky!

He's even indicated that Hughes COULD be a big help.  Yet, he played a couple of minutes against OU and go pulled and never returned.  Did the same again against Ball State.

"Getting back into shape" wouldn't seem to be the issue, based on that data.  I just think Utomi and Poke are doing more for us right now, and the staff is comfortable rotating Big Dog, Kwan, Utomi, and Poke at those 2 post spots, with the majority of that time going to the top 2 guys.

I said this previously, but expect to see all of these situation as fluid, depending on the situation, match ups, opponent, etc., from here forward.

I just feel in general we need to build a solid lead 1 of these games so that way guys like Hughes can get some run. I can't imagine endurance is the problem as Poke only played 5 or 6 minutes last night himself. I just feel Hughes missed a large chunk of time and hasn't gotten the opportunity to shake off the rust. When you're down 10 with 10 minutes left, that's not the time you want your players trying to find themselves. You want the guys that you feel best help you at that moment.

Suggestion to Zips Marketing Team: When the good guys go on a huge run, have the opponent on the ropes and they call a time out, do NOT silence the crowd with silly contests during said time out. Maybe limit the contests to the scheduled media time outs?

Just curious but how would you like to to see them handle this? This isn't the first time I've seen this mentioned in this thread.

I was able to watch the replay this morning and I believe I know which point you are referring to. It was at the 4:38 mark and Kwan had just hit the big 3 to go up 59-55. To me the credit goes to the Toledo coach(not going to attempt to butcher his name) for calling the time out to limit the momentum.

The timeout led to a full two minutes between stopping and starting play, likely due to the game being broadcast and commercials being shown during breaks.

I will agree that hokey games might not be the best way to keep the crowd motivated but two minutes is a long time to be playing Zombie Nation to keep the crowd hyped up. I don't necessarily know what the right answer is for those situations.

I like the idea of limiting contests to scheduled media timeouts. A lot.

What if they marketed/sold "hype" slots? Have a Zips Rally Towel giveaway, where the cheerleaders and dance team throw Rally Towels to the crowd to wave around. Maybe do this during moments like last night, where the Zips were down by 11 and stormed back? Then have another item giveaway for when the Zips go on a nice run to extend their lead - not sure exactly what item this would be, since the MAC prohibits noise-makers. Obviously on the items, put a big Zips logo in the middle, with the sponsors logo in the corner or on the back. The first 30-45 seconds would be letting Zombie Nation play to keep the crowd hype, then keep Zombie Nation playing, or switch to WE WILL ROCK YOU for the remaining of the timeout, and have Willy announce the giveaway, but coupled with his usual hype speeches.

Definitely a good idea there.

Admittedly I haven't been to a game in the JAR for some years so I may not be the most qualified to even comment on this matter, but I'm just playing devils advocate here.

Your idea is good, but what happens if there are two moments within the final 8 minutes of a game?

Sponsors would have to pay for their products to be distributed during a certain game. Say you line up two sponsors for each game. What if a game doesn't have any such moments?

There are a lot of logistics that go into these situations that have to be accounted for.

Again, I agree that keeping the crowd engaged is a high priority, but I don't think it's so cut and dry to make it happen every game.

I'm not on the marketing team, so I'm not 100% sure how their contracts and sponsorships are set up.

As far as the two moments within the final 8 minutes goes, just have a solid supply of items ready to go. I'd set up a season-long sponsorship deal that says Company A buys a calculated X amount of items for giveaways towards the end of the game when the Zips go on a run. A certain number of items is allotted per timeout. If you have a leftover supply at the end of the season, the University can use it to giveaway to students on campus, promoting each of the University, Zips Athletics, and Company A.

As for the situation that a game doesn't have such moments, I don't know. I'll let the people who get paid to figure that out, solve that dilemma. Maybe you go through the schedule and pick out the 10 or so most anticipated home games?

Personally, I like those Arby's and Panera Bread coupons that they dropped from the rafters. It actually gets fans on their feet. I get no chain is going to agree to commit to giving those out for all 15 home games, but it would be nice to line up more of those type of deals in the future. Some possibilities that come to mind are Chipotle, Pita Pit, or Taco Bell.

They could almost certainly do that for the free Chick-fil-a sandwich coupons they hand out after games as you are walking out the door. IF they still have a partnership with Chick-fil-a that is.

I am glad you posted this.  I looked up Zombie Nation to see what that was.  I always called this the Z-I-P-S song and every person I ever asked what the real name was did not know.  Old people rejoice!

I caught one of the Panera coupons. It was for $5.00 off a catering order. Might be the worst give-away ever. It was fun to catch, I guess.

Yeah, that's dumb. I got the Arby's one and it was for a free sandwich. I just incorrectly assumed panera was the same. I was wrong.

Interesting comment by Todd Kowlacyzk at the end of the article.

Kowalczyk also gave Johnson, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, credit.

“He’s going to be player of the year in our league for a reason,” Kowalczyk said.

So at least one coach values overall performance and team contribution. I think it is entirely possible we could have two All-MAC first teamers.

The year we won 26 games and didn't get a post season invite was criminal.

If Big Dog isn't MAC POTY, it would be an even larger injustice.

And if Kwan isn't 1st team all-MAC, the offense is similar.

The Zips are running roughshod over the MAC...it's pretty much a Secretariat-like beat down,  Having the top 2 Zips as 1st Team All MAC is a given. They'd both start for any other team in the league.

My guess is that that they won't feel justified with 2 guys from the same team on the first team.

Dog will be 1st.

Kwan will be 2nd

Antino will be Honorable Mention

I won't agree, but that's what I think will happen.
