Jerry Slocum retires from YSU & Gary Waters retires from CSU

Recommended Posts

Thad Matta has plateaued, and has been plateaued for some time now. His tournament appearances are like Dambrot's 21 win seasons - participation trophies. Not to mention he had the one big run to the Championship game and has progressively regressed year after year. It shouldn't be this hard to have more success at OSUcks. He also supposedly has some major health problems.

Plus, if Senderoff is Mr. Pinky, Matta is Mr. Red. Not sure I've ever seen someone get so red so easily.

I could live with that "success"

Two straight years of not having a prayer of being in the NCAA Tournament, an RPI anywhere from 20 to 40 points lower than the best team in the MAC during that same period, finishing 11th in conference play, and just coming off of the previous off-season where you had a mass exodus of transfers leaving the program?

Sure, I'll define that as "success" as well.

5 Sweet 16 appearances

3 Elite 8 appearances

2 Final 4 appearances

You wouldn't call that success?

His predecessor followed a similar path.  Initial success with a Final Four appearance in 1999 followed soon after by a complete implosion, and eventually 3 years probation for NCAA violations.

But they don't care about basketball (that's why they spend over 8 MILLION on men's basketball).  Just like they don't care about soccer either.  That's why they bus students up here for soccer matches after a string of 12 years where they haven't been able to beat us.

Are you seriously trying to compare O'Brien to Matta?

Nobody said they didn't care about basketball. What was said is outside of a brief period in the 60s they've never been a historically great basketball program. They are football power, not a basketball power like UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, etc. Matta made OSU basketball nationally relevant again the same way Dantonio made MSU nationally relevant in football. MSU shouldn't fire Dantonio for 1-2 down seasons and OSU shouldn't fire Matta because he had 1-2 down years.

Hasn't Matta lost some key assistants in recent years? The head coach always gets the praise and the condemnations but often times it is the staff as a whole that determines who wins and loses both on the court and off of it. I feel like OSU's recruiting has been weaker lately and that could certainly be directly tied to changes in assistant coaches. I am not an OSU fan by any stretch of the imagination but I do think his past success has earned him the right to get a chance to turn things around, at least in the short-term.

... lost to Rutgers tonight in the Big Ten tourney.

Then their season is almost certainly over. You can drop one off that 21 wins every year for the last X amount of years. Now its just us, Kansas, Duke and Gonzaga.  Hey it may not be much but it's all we've got right now.

I'd gladly forfeit that cherry picked stat for 1 Sweet 16 appearance.

Agreed.  That stat may actually be handicapping us.  I can't figure out why we don't play a more challenging non-con schedule & trying to keep the 21-win streak alive is all I can come up with.

Go into the lion's den, KD.  Hit the road & schedule the big boys.  (This should have been the year to do it w/ Dog & Kwan both seniors.  Next year's group is going to perhaps need a softer non-con schedule to learn to play together w/o the big two.  But I digress...)

It's not fair to say that Waters failed at CSU. He had good success when he started. He won a game or two at the tourney few years back and was always competitive in the horizon league and had a player drafted to the NBA. However, 3 years ago, he had his 3 top players mysteriously transfer to Michigan St. and Louisville. He couldn't rebound out of that. Those 3 kids killed his career.
