ZipsVoice
Okay, back to a better subject....I was sitting there getting steamy, despite the cold, wet weather, watching the Zips collect stupid penalty (beginning with Junk) after stupid penalty that aided the Bulls move down the field. 4 for 49 yards. Then....voila! No more! The guys go it together and played penalty free (I believe) for the remainder of the game! Way to go Zips!!! and coaching staff too!

UA1987
I was thinking 'awe SH_ T!' when their starting QB was returning just for the Zips. In hindsight, this may have lifted the play of Akron as I'm sure the coaches said 'good, we want to beat their best'. Great 1 point win! I have to give a shout out to Featherstone as I wondered if he would be a liability after Guiser was lost for the season. No sir!, we are fine at safety. Go Zips down the stretch! Funny you bring up safety play. I was listening to the pregame show, and Detweiler said he was glad that George has been moved to safety with the loss of Guiser, because it was apparent that teams have been targeting a player not to be named. I assume he was talking about Featherstone, but I feel Featherstone has largely played solid, as with Davis. Just didn't get that comment from him. The only player I see the opposition targeting is Denzel Butler.

Initially I thought they might have flagged him for raising his forearms up around the head but not targeting with the helmet. If he has had ejections previously they were looking for him. The zeebs do that. EA's article mentions that yes, he was ejected in a previous game. So for the record I did actually learn something haha. I don't think it was a dirty play. But if you check the rule as written, there's not much room for leeway. In this instance it was unfortunate for us, but it's clear that the game is evolving away from the old school Ronnie Lott school of hitting in favor of more fundamental tackling. edit - I just saw Skip has mentioned the previous ejection. Hard to tell the snap counts, but Shawn was all over the field Saturday. Impressive if 2 and 7 are splitting time, and were the leading tacklers Saturday!?!? A product of Buffalo chucking the ball around 50 times on rainy day, but still impressive. From my perspective (which is tough sometimes, especially with weather) other than Featherstone, I thought Brian Bell was seeing the field very well. LZIp
Important to note they weren't really splitting time Saturday, at least most of the game, considering Alvin was ejected early. It is good to see them both play well though. I've always thought George was more of a natural SS or (or even a smaller LB like Bischof) than a corner, although I do think he would probably be a better corner than Butler. I really don't know who we have behind the #3 CB though...
skip-zip
I understand that a point was being made that a fill-in DB made a lot of tackles. I'm glad he was able to step in. And am I reading that correctly that he was the ONLY defensive player that had a Defended Pass on Saturday? But I see something else there too, which tells more of a story about our defense giving up so many yards on Saturday. Our top THREE tacklers were all Defensive Backs. That's never a good sign. Camara also stuck out with me for having an unusually great performance. And Bell continues to exceed all of the expectations/criticism he's received on this board. He has improved and is playing consistently better. I don't know that criticism has been unfair. I don't think ge has played well and off the field distractions don't make the program look good. Overall, people have recognized his improved play. But he was also highly touted due to his FSU recruitment. FWIW, if you caught Sunday night football, you would have seen a Steeler bend but don't break defense that kept Detroit from scoring a touchdown and allowed 5 field goals. Announcers called out that this style of defense is the result of the defense having a lot of speed.

I too agree with you and zipsoutsider...Camara's name got called a heck of a lot more Saturday for being in on tackles or pressuring QB than any past game, at least home game. He really played well, and did so at Toledo to if I remember correctly.

Maybe we are fully aware that we can't make the stops up front, and are keeping everything in front of us and hoping for mistakes. Maybe speed vs. size/strength is how we have to defend people this year. If that's how it needs to be, I just sure hope that we can continue to end almost-certain touchdown drives with endzone interceptions in the remaining games too. Those were the difference-makers in both the WMU game and the Buffalo game. Like I said earlier, maybe this is the year that the Football Gods are finally casting some good fortune on Akron. I just don't think costly mistakes like that are something you can rely upon to happen when you need them to happen.
Steve1982
My wife and I set the timer on the TV so we wouldn't miss a second of this nationally televised game. She laughed as you could count the people in the stands across the way from the cameras. It reminded me of a game at the Rubber Bowl years ago. My dad always bought 4 season tickets each year (yes he was the one!). During one season (I'm assuming a year they were good, so during the Steve Cockerham days) all of us in attendance were asked to move to the East side of the field so with the cameras on the west it would look like the Bowl was full.
