Bama wouldn't be ranked ahead of several 2 loss P5 teams if SOS didn't matter. OSU wouldn't be ranked ahead of 1 loss Indiana. Penn State, Texas, and Georgia wouldn't be ranked ahead of Notre Dame. SOS certainly plays some sort of factor. Saying it meant nothing at all is just disingenuous. It just didn't mean as much as you wanted it to, which is fine if you feel that way. I won't argue there.

If the committee currently cared only about ratings then Alabama would be in over SMU. Bama has a vastly larger following and would attract a larger TV audience. I don't disagree that the 12 best teams likely aren't in. However, claiming who the 12 best teams are is very subjective. You don't have the large sample size like you do in basketball to more accurately measure teams. More and more conferences are moving to 9 game conference schedules. The SEC remains at 4, but they all play an FCS game so it's still really only 3 OOC games thar you can use to measure them against others.

The teams listed above over a 1 loss Indiana team were in their conference championship game. Indiana was not. Nor was Notre Dame due to not being in a conference. Plus, OSU beat Indiana and the committee said head to head was important. That’s why they were ranked where they were.

SEC was planning to move to a 9 game conference schedule, but supposedly that has been put on hold due to how the selection process played out this year.

Let's not forget that Lou left every single program he coached either on probation or on the verge of probation.

If we eliminated all of the coaches who violated NCAA rules when Holtz was a coach, the remaining coaches wouldn't fill up a phone booth.

Not Holtz related, but your Demon Deacs just landed QB Ethan Hampton from NIU.

I'm unimpressed. Average MAC QBs aren't going to get them to six wins at an ACC school. Wake has gone from John Wolford (played in the NFL) to Jamie Newman (solid QB) to Sam Hartman (NFL player) to Mitch Griffiths (talentless player who left for Marshall and then retired from football) and Hank Bachmeier (average at Boise State and disappointing at LA Tech). Bachmeier is a moron. I have no idea what they saw in a 25 year old who was that unaware.

In addition, Clawson landed a QB from GA who is only six foot tall and 175 pounds. The point is this, his offense requires a physically and mentally solid QB. He has not had one in two years resulting in two losing season. I didn't think they could be worse in 2023 than in 2024, but they somehow pulled it off. I don't see a better QB next year.

Another losing season next year will test how much good will Clawson has if this past season hasn't put it to the test already with a horrible loss to Louisiana. I think he has been at Wake for 12 years. He probably makes $4 million per year all in so he has made $48 million in a low cost of living area. If they are worse next year, the first game against Akron in 2026 could be the first game for a new coach.

I’m also unimpressed. I thought Hampton was limited as a G5 QB and now he’ll face even better competition. Maybe he’ll prove us wrong? Good luck to him.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see some changes in the near future regarding this. Even many of the big schools, who the portal benefits the most, aren't a fan that the portal is opened prior to bowls being played.

I'm not sure the timing of the portal opening fixes this problem. If a player is going to leave, he's going to leave the team whether he enters the portal in December or January.

OTOH, I would imagine schools want to get their new TP players chosen and enrolled for the winter semester to be ready for spring ball. Kind of a rock and hard place dilemma.

NIU expected to accept Mountain West invite in coming days.

They’re considering the Summit, Ohio Valley, and Horizon as potential homes for all their other sports.

Seems dumb to me, but I won't miss them at all. They better have a huge increase in their travel budget.

There's probably some value for NIU in going to the MWC for football (and having a bit less travel in all the other sports),

First of all, this wouldn't bother me in the least. Less is better for the mac.

What's the value? NIU has a proud tradition of football and this move destroys their program.

It really doesn't destroy much either way - NIU isn't really losing any major longstanding rivalry the way an Akron would if they left the MAC, and who (beyond maybe Ball State) has any buzz when NIU comes to town?

If there was one team to lose that wouldn't really upset the status quo either way (despite their success at times), it's probably NIU.

The value is likely in lower travel expenses in the Horizon League for everything else (more than offsetting the increased football travel) plus probably a little more TV revenue.  This definitely isn't a risk-free move, I'll agree.  But I see why NIU is going to try it.

Whether they're flying 1 time zone east as far as UMass or Buffalo 4 times per season versus 1-2 time zones west isn't a big cost difference. They will increase their revenue over the MAC and be done with the Tue.-Wed. games. And they're not giving up much if anything by playing other sports in a more regional league. Not sure if they'll have to move their soccer program out of the MVC.

I'm a little surprised, but not much. He made over $40 million during his time at the school. Staying on as a consultant makes sense as the medical benefits are great because they have their own health system.

Does Wake have the stomach to hire a complete sleaze bag in an era that requires total sleaze bag coaches to be successful? I doubt it.

The second bullet is a good idea because spring practice is a waste of time.

The other two just delayed the inevitable. Players are going to leave. Everyone knows who they are. What if they refuse to practice or play? The idea of moving the TP entry back assumes a player can be forced to play.

I think if the portal opening happened after bowl games, there'd be more guys that stayed for them.  But yeah, that's not going to stop some of these.

Saw something saying that the opening game in 2025 is home against Wyoming on Thursday night, August 28. Must have moved it from Saturday the 30th?

Heard Joe Dunn mention the game might not be on Saturday, but at the time that was all he could say. Is it being moved to national tv?

Don’t know but I know there are a limited amount of games that open on Thursday so I assume there is some type of decent TV coverage. My guess would be espn2 or espnU at best.
