Like most, I'm a flawless 4-0 in picking the Zips wins/losses this season. But this game is much dicier. I am a huge fan of the Zips defensive line. They have size and speed, and depth. Against BG that should help take some pressure off our secondary. I think they carry the Zips to the "W."

Although each season is mutually exclusive, Arth beat these guys twice. Did BG beat Marshall? Sure. But they beat Minnesota in 2021 too, and we still won. In BG.

Zips are at home. Win by 2+ scores (is a "score" a TD?). Running game gets on-track. Via Twitter we get to watch unstable, completely amateur phone video footage of the Zips team rejoicing, and belting out "Win for Akron!" in the post game locker room.

Zips 31 BG 20

I’m also a fan of the defensive line. As I was thinking about the roster itself, I realized how poorly Arth recruited the prep scene. He certainly hit on a handful, but overall not so good.

On defense all 4 starters on the DL were transfers in some fashion. Both Johnson (JUCO) and Morton (Syracuse) were Arth recruits. Harper (Syracuse) and Thomas (JUCO). Our 3 man rotation at Safety is the same way. Martin (W. Virginia), Thompson (Duke), and JKP (Michigan State). Of course JKP was an Arth recruit, but not out of HS.

On offense it’s even more evident. Irons (JUCO) is the only Arth transfer holdover starting. SJL (Pittsburgh), George (PSU), and Adams (LSU) at WR. Banks (W. Virginia) at TE. Whigan (PSU) and Banes (Houston) on the OL.

So the only non-transfer starters on both sides are Bubba, Durant, Hooks, Lewis, Williams, Daniels, Georges. And McCoy who is not an Arth recruit.

Could add either Boateng or Terry in at the other LB spot as starters to further illustrate the point. And Golden-Nelson has also started some at CB.

I also like how our DL has begun to come into it's own. Victor Jones was a monster from Game 1, but now Zach Morton has emerged as just as much of a monster at the other DE position.  Likewise, Curtis Harper has been solid from Game 1, but now with #55 DT Kyle Thomas lining up beside him we've been stuffing the run for 3 quarters now.  Let's stuff the run & pressure the QB for all 4 quarters tomorrow!

Zips win by 2 scores.

Go Zips!

Posts hyping the DL is not what I expecting to see this morning lol.

Agree Morton has been coming along well and we have a nice rotation at DE with him, Jones, and Johnson. I'd like to see more from Jones. He popped out the first game, but not a whole lot since. Thomas has seemed to play well at DT. Hopefully we'll get Holt back soon and able to play at a high level.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what our DL can do against a less stout OL. I wouldn’t think the transfers from JSU and Coastal are that good. I hope they don’t prove me wrong.

Ha! 😄 I'm bullish on these guys. Last year we were slow, small, and inexperienced. In comparison to the DL crew we fielded against Liberty, it is night and day. If we add Holt to the mix (he could be a "Warren Ball", but I remain hopeful) we should have as solid a starting D-line as there is in the MAC. We were the worst in 2021, by a large margin.

Go Zips! I'll be in Lot 9 in roughly 26 hours! 🤘

"If" you can find the space key after a comma your post will be readable and not like a graduate of PCCC. Sorry, that was pretty low. No one should suffer that indignation. 😁

I don't want to make any score prediction, as I will probably jinx the Zips or something will go horribly wrong!

But I do like their chances tomorrow. If sports betting was legal in Ohio, I'd drop a unit or two on the Zips against the spread. There have been nice signs of progression after the first month, but I still expect this to be a season full of growing pains and quite a few frustrating moments. To me, I expect them to play every MAC team within 3 scores at the very least, maybe with a blowout sprinkled in. As for games against similar competition (such as BG tomorrow), I no longer fear of the threat of a blowout like we saw against Ohio and Buffalo last year. A blowout loss tomorrow would be very troubling, and it would be oh-so-Akron to do, losing on homecoming to a beatable opponent in embarrassing fashion. It will take years to scrub the Akron football trauma of the last 13 years, and while Joe is indeed a superhero, he's going to need a little more time to wipe away the past and bring back the Akron football magic of the early 2000s.

So, with that said, I expect there to be more growing pains tomorrow. I think the Zips will come out with some fire. I'm really hoping and quite honestly expecting Joe to start to empty the playbook a little more like he did last week as we start going for wins instead of million-dollar paychecks. Am I ready to outright say the Zips will win this game, even by a couple of touchdowns? I don't think I'm there quite yet. But I am expecting a pretty close ball game, with the winner coming out on top by no more than 10 points. BG has the edge in continuity and experience, but Akron's got the massive edge in coaching. I think it will win us some ball games in the league this year, hopefully starting tomorrow!

GO ZIPS!!!

Just saw this post. Great evaluation. To expand some, Bubba and Hooks weren’t Arth recruits either, so even worse.

I never thought I'd see someone fail worse than Ianello in evaluating and landing highschool talent but Arth was a trendsetter. Man was his staff was bad
