Zips Blips

Recommended Posts

The Zips has commitments from 3 "preferred walk-ons."Brigham VanEtten is a 6' 3" 210 lb WR. The Zips had maxed-out on WR scholarships. VanEtten and his parents loved the Akron program and decided to sit out a year and wait for something to open up. He's got great size, and is an exceptional student. Click for BioJason Kaiser is a 6" 1" 175 burner from Bellaire. He ran a 4.29 40 at the Zips camp this summer. He'll need a year to build up his strength, then...look out.Zach Campbell was the punter/kicker for Cantom McKinley in 2006. He will compete with Igor for the starting kicker job this summer, and is a solid fall-back if Igor's back-related heath issues continue.Click for PicOther Notes:Derron Smith, an LB listed in last year's recruiting class, did not enroll at Akron this spring. He's presently at a prep school. Probably 40/60 odds he'll ever see the field in a Zips uniform. The Zips have four remaining scholarships to give. Look for two of them to be awarded within the next month. The awardees will be "impact" student athletes. One will be visiting campus next weekend. No names at this time. The other two scholarships will likely be held until the summer.

Thanks for the update - one question, I thought the max was 25 scholarhips per year. If we signed 24, how can we give 4 more out this year?
There is no max. It's all about how many scholarships you have open off your 85. If we chose to sign 10 guys this year and had 40 open next year, we could sign 40 guys. With all the comings and goings we've seen my guess would be we have quite a few schollies on the table.

That is incorrect. The NCAA Bylaws state that you are only allowed 25 initial scholarships per year, meaning 25 scholarships to give out in a recruiting class. However, there are a few exceptions. First, you can bring in greyshirts that actually sign now but don't receive their scholarships until January of 2008 so they count as one of the 25 initials for the 2008 class instead of the 2007 class. Also, I believe there are one or two other exceptions that can be used, but are used very rarely. I forget exactly what those exceptions are and I don't have the time to look up the bylaws right now. You do usually see a couple of schools each year that sign over the 25 initials max, and it is because of one of the exceptions.....greyshirt or other exceptions. The rules are no more than 85 total scholarships at any given time and a maximum of 25 initials per recruiting class.

I don't pretend to know the "shell game" that goes on with scholarships. I'm sure greyshirting comes into play. I can say that, by some means, we have 4 left to give. And that two of them will likely happen within the month.

If the zips have twenty-five schlorships to give and "sign" twenty-five recruits but eight of the recruits are non-qualifyers or prop 48s, whatever the damn distingtion (sp) is, how many schlorships do the zips actually obligate on the 2007 recruits when classes begin september 2007 - 17 0r 25? If seventeen, does that mean some non schlorships players are given aid for one year. If not - what ? B) DEFENSE SPEED DEFENSE SPEED DEFENSE SPEED DEFENSE SPEED DEENSE SPEED DEFENSE SPEED

Blue and Gold asked.....What does "preferred walk-on" mean, exactly? Does it mean they have an inside track on earning a scholarship next season? Are they eligible to play this season? As Rosanne Rosanadana used to say, You have a lot of questions Blue and Gold. Heres the answer to all three:Preferred walk on still means the same thing it has always meant....someone who isn't good enough to get a scholarship.No.If by "this" season you mean next season, and they are academically eligible....Yes.

The only thing I will add to this is:In these cases, the kids that are "preferred walk-ons" were thought of pretty highly by the Zips. They aren't simply the Honorable Mention All ICL, D-5, Mineral Ridge, 5' 8" JP Morgan trying out for the team. The WR has a great chance to get a scholarship next season. We just didn't have another scholarship to give to a WR this year. The kid from Bellaire is small, but lightning fast. If he can put on some weight between now and fall 2008 he has a good chance at a scholarship. The kicker is in a great position. Igor's health fails, then he's got a starting job. Beyond that, he may win the job outright this summer. The Zips can't afford to have two scholarship kickers in Feb 2007 (no D1 school can), so he's a walk-on at this time.

Here is another name to add to the list of new recruits. Kade Wagner, 6'2" 200lbs QB/FS Green HS has signed a letter of intent to play for UA. Kade is a tough kid who comes from a good family and should contribute to the program down the road. :D
I seen this kid play and wasent impressed with him. I also have a link to his highlight film if anyone would like to see it. He would be by far the worst QB on the team. and he doesnt have the speed to play FS at the D1 level.

Lets see the link. I think he looked pretty godd when I saw him play around a dozen or so games. Does he have 4.4 speed? No, but he is mobile. Give the kid a chance.

Sorry it took so long to respond, here is his highlight film. Notice the passes he throws are small swing passes, and he doesnt really have any pressure on him. his official size is also not 200 LBS, I was told by the coach at green that he is only at around 6'3 190 right now, so he is undersized for a LB in D1 also. below is what is listed to the scouts who he sent his highlight film to.http://scoutingohio.com/Kade_Wagner_Part2video.htmKade WagnerQB Green High SchoolClass of 20076'3" 185 lbs
