I don't feel good about this team if the roster stands as Catdaddy has predicted. Too many question marks with no solid QB or OL amongst the biggest ones. Please Santa return with more productive players i don't care where Santa finds them (TP, Bench, HS, JC).

I feel fine about the starting OL, but the depth is concerning. And there is no way we make it through an entire season unscathed there.
 

Safety is also a question mark simply because it’s unproven at this level. Similar to our DL last year. 
 

To me, QB is the position that is going to make or break us.

@catdaddyp, what do you make of us apparently not re-offering Kamarii Landers?  According to twitter/X he has received an offer from Coastal Carolina.  But as far as I can tell that's his only current offer.  I thought he had tremendous potential - I can't figure out teams (including us) not taking a gamble on a good left tackle.

My best guess if it was a grades issue, they may not trust that he will return and keep things in good standing. Might also be an admissions issue if grades were a problem before? 
 

I also assume the staff is high on James and Morris. If Blanchard comes back healthy and one of the two redshirt freshmen are ready for significant snaps, we should be fine there. That’s a lot of “ifs” though.

I’d like to see someone overtake Chambers. He’s played a lot due to injuries, but has really been pegged as a back up his whole career. Him starting this year feels like it would be a necessity rather than earned. I’d hope at least Kindred would be able beat him out if we don’t bring in someone else. Would also like to bring in another interior OL for depth at the very least.

 

Also as time goes on, our holes being filled should start to come from HS recruits more and more. We’ve had a few already like Williams, Davis, McCoy, and Marcus Moore and Norton to an extent. But them stepping up along with others like Kaiwan Murphy, David Jester, Zayden Laing-Taylor, etc should go a long way.

Agreed. I thought Chambers seemed solid as a RT, but was sometimes out of his depth at LT. Kindred definitely has more natural ability. I think the HS OL recruiting has been strong and we need those guys to become regular contributors soon. Landers, Williams, and Davis already have (did) from the first class. Would like to think James, Morris, and Mann will do the same in 2024. while Williams and Davis continue to progress. Unfortunately, there’s just no quick fix to the OL. Year 3 should prove to be the best (although that may not be saying much) in JoeMo’s tenure.

 

I think we’re two in vs two out on scholarship OL and have offered over 20 portal OL. So have to think at least a few more guys are on their way out.

Walk on WR Jax Smith is still listed even though he transferred to Southwestern Oklahoma State.

DT Terray Jones is still listed, but I’m pretty sure he’s out of eligibility.

 

Im certain most of the 2023 HS class that did not play and are listed as Sophomores are actually redshirt freshmen.

 

Im going to remove the above players from the position previews and will add back if it turns out they are still on the team.

The next rule the NCAA may throw by the wayside is eligibility expiration. I predict, starting in 2027, you’ll be able to play as many years as you’d like as long as you’re in school. 
 

Mid-season transfers with immediate eligibility will also become the norm.

The reality is we are still adding another 6-10 players in total, with most or all of them being transfer portal players. Still opportunity to bring it a lot more talent.

 

QB - do we (or can we even convince) another experienced QB to come in and fight for the job? We currently technically do have one less scholly in that position group than last year. 

RB - I think we're OK here. Two intriguing transfers brought in and Kellom another offseason to improve.

TE - Fine in my mind, but I think they bring in one more.

WR - a lot of intriguing options, but nobody has really done much at the FBS level aside from Adams. Would lean towards being fine to stay put here unless you can bring in a Shocky/George/Adams type from a good P5.

OL - I think this unit is at worst case an improvement over last year, but probably still a long way to go. 2 more P5 transfers a la Whigan or Seymore would be clutch.

DL - Same level as last year at worst. Would bring in another DT and DE to add more depth at worst, or find another Nunnally/Jones type as best.

LB - Good.

CB - with Jackson bailing, want another outside corner. I think we're good at Nickel with Lewis and Thomas backing him up. Surprised Thomas didn't play more than he did last year. I thought he looked the part in the spring game.

S - our least experienced unit on the team (just above TE). There are some intriguing young options, but nobody on the team has ever started a FBS game, let alone played much at this level. I think Paul Lewis is a shoe in at one of the spots, but the other is up for grabs. I'd bring in another as insurance at worst.

I'd LOVE to see Kamarii back. I was in touch with him via twitter last September and at the time he was planning on getting his grades together @ JUCO & then come back to Akron. I'd been hoping for that scenario to play out.

Right now all the new players are going through the compliance process. If they can not get eligible, they will move on.
