Arizona State just hired 63 year old Randy Bennett whose resume is also questionable.

Randy Bennett probably took St. Mary's as far as he could. I'm not sure if you've seen them play outside of the tournament, but they play in what looks like a high school gym and he built them into a consistent at-large caliber program.

I don't think ASU made that hire looking long-term. Probably more to right the ship and fix the culture mess that Hurley left behind. Perhaps making the job more attractive in 3-5 years for whoever they pivot to in the future.

After Butler, there are none.

We'll have to see what ripple effects ND and potential UNC hiring have, but looking much better than 48 hours ago.

Never had a P5 job and won a tournament game last year

Yes, these have been good developments for us.

10 years older than Groce and the same winning percentage in the NCAA Tournament. Very hard to say for certain Groce wouldn't appeal to a P4.

Again, if he had won an NCAAT game or two at Akron, yes. As it is now, I do not see it happening, and it's not a knock on Groce. We are lucky to have him. That's just the likely perspective of any P4 AD.

You don't have to get a NCAA Tournament win to get a P4 job. This offseason we've seen Casey Alexander take Kansas State job, McNamara get the Syracuse job, and Byran Hodgson take Providence job. None of them have an NCAA tournament win.

In fact, with so much fewer mid-majors winning tournament games these days there is going to be fewer opportunities for P4 schools to hire the candidate that you described.

If Groce doesn't get offered the Butler job I expect him to commit to Akron and get to work on putting together next year's team. You never know the intentions of another person, but I think Butler is a unique opportunity in that it is close to home for him, a place he coached previously and is familiar with, and is still in the Midwest, where he has spent his entire coaching career.
