catdaddyp Posted December 20, 2025 Author Report Posted December 20, 2025 Bump for updates and a few notes. - EMU signed the largest class in the first signing period, with many of the signees being freshmen. - Toledo has lost nearly half their freshmen signees due to the coaching change. I don’t think that matters much anymore with the portal having become the more relevant recruiting source, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway. - Supposedly, UMASS has used their NIL funds towards retention of 15 players, and 13 of them have indicated they will stay at UMASS. - I’ll continue to update this thread as I see more activity. 2 2 Quote

I'm sure it's cheaper and easier to retain your own players than getting into bidding wars for others. It's probably the better long-term building strategy assuming you can bring in players that are capable of being developed. That said, UMass appeared to be a mid-tier FCS caliber roster last year. One would think if they have the deep pockets they claim to have they would at least try to jump start this rebuild by bringing in a few day 1 contributors. Someone on UMass board says they plan to spent $3 million in NIL for 2026. Without some outside talent I'm not sure how that money is going to get spent. Do they just plan to grossly overpay their current roster? Quote

Do they just plan to grossly overpay their current roster? My guess is they feel there will be a solid enough base to make them competitive in 2026 with the retention of their 13–15 “quality” players, plus a decent recruiting class. I’d think this past year was more of a learn-on-the-job experience for their HC, where he found out football at the G5 level is a bit more difficult than at FCS. I don’t know if UMass has the right guy for the job or not, but I’d love to see Akron find a way to retain most of our best players. 1 Quote

I more just doubt they have 12-15 quality players worth building around, but time will tell. I do agree it's a winning formula if you have a solid foundation in place already. Quote
catdaddyp Posted January 1 Author Report Posted January 1 (edited) Bump before the portal officially opens tomorrow. For portal departures, I’ve only included players who I believe are on scholarship and walk-ons who played significant snaps. Edited January 1 by catdaddyp 2 Quote
ZippyDoo Posted January 1 Report Posted January 1 Marcus Moore Jr hit the portal again. I guess his two assisted tackles wasn't worth the money he got at Purdue... Probably didn't see himself climbing the depth chart anytime soon... My guess is he will end up back in the MAC... Quote

This year it’s been slightly smaller so far, though we may still sign a few more. Like Captain alluded to, most immediate impact players are going to come from either the portal or JUCO. Although to this point, our JUCO signees have mostly been depth pieces, outside of a few guys. 1 1 Quote

Probably didn't see himself climbing the depth chart anytime soon... My guess is he will end up back in the MAC... We need DL help and I think he’s a borderline all conference player. I’d take him back. 3 Quote
ZippyDoo Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 Personally, I would not. I'm petty like that. I met the kid very nice kid i wish him nothing but blessings and success but he chose the road he wanted to take and that was to chase the dollar signs. First to Bowlong Green, remember. He couldn't get out fast enough, no fault to him... i just would not take him make nor do i think there is any way he would want to come back after being at purdue. sometimes you have to live by your decisions. Had he stayed he may have gotten more money and more experience and went somewhere to play consequences to your decisions. not all about chasing the fast cash 1 Quote

But then, I thought "they could just travel to local schools and get more players that way". I could see budget affecting our ability to get quality players but not so much affecting the number of players. But I'm sure our budget doesn't help matters at all either. Quote

Getting bodies for the sake of bodies is the Arth Approach. It’s proven that you go 1-11 or 0-12 that way, and when those players hit the portal, no one picks them up and it kills your graduation compliance numbers. 4 Quote
