  1. 500 members probably equals at least 2,000 potential customers, assuming family and friends. These people are football fans used to paying $100.00 for game tickets, big money for parking, sitting in nosebleed seats and watching their team get waxed every week. At the Zips game they will be getting tickets at 1/10th the Browns' price, great seats, field access, a shirt, cheap parking with tailgating... and a chance to see "their" team actually win. I hope it works out, and they have a great experience. If so, the dividends will only multiply in the future.

  2. A quick Zips-related strip club story - Back in the Rubber Bowl days, "Rumors" was a strip club across the street from the stadium entrance. Heading into the stadium circa 2004, my 3-year old son in his back booster seat asked "What's that place?" I said "Rumors. Its a place where girls dance on tables." He says - "Can we go there?" I reply - "Maybe after the game." After the game we're heading home and pass Rumors. I thought the kid was asleep, but he starts screaming "YOU PROMISED WE'D GO TO RUMORS! I WANNA GO TO RUMORS!" Tears were streaming down his face. We hopped on 77 North and went home. It took him at least 10 minutes to settle down. Go Zips.

  3. Great video. Deontae Moore's hit was truly epic. Lord have mercy. I'm surprised Litton could walk in a straight line after that one.

  4. Yeah if you're driving up here please don't go to a chain restaurant. Go to Luigi's, Lockview, Swensons or something of that variety mentioned above.

  5. The last (and only) time I went to the Tilted Kilt the food was mediocre at best and our waitress was downright ugly! I try to avoid chain restaurants unless there are no other options.

  6. It's amazing how a progrum can become notorious forever for one landmark win. That certainly means much more than our "almost win" in Ann Arbor, which was probably soon forgotten. But, I probably will never forget Akron running that final play from the 1 yard line. I think it's the closest I've ever gotten to a real heart attack.....well....other than about 5 or 6 of our basketball MAC tournament games.

  9. In my building I recently had a conversation with a lady who lives on my floor. She's an old school Ohio State honk, but her and her daughter will be going to the game against App. State. She said it's the first Zips game that they've ever been to, but she said she couldn't wait to see the the team that beat Michigan, and the team that almost beat Michigan, play (not to mention she has heard good things about the Zips). It's probably because OSU has a bye-week this week, but hopefully the Zips can put on a nice show for them.

  10. Nice scoop and run by Venckus but you kinda wish the TD was credited to Moore. At any rate I guess it will show in his sack and forced fumble stats.

  12. 9 hours ago, Dr Z said: How would you describe your scheme in the secondary? They will be challenged this weekend. I know the Mountaineers play a 3-4 defensive scheme but I can't pick up what they are doing on the backend from watching ESPN3. Our offensive line will have their work cut out for them stopping the pass rush. I really wish Warren Ball had a crack at their 3-4 front, I feel the size matchup would have been conducive to some broken tackles. It appears they are basically in a zone coverage, with a cover two look, our DC will move the LB's into coverage if need be, they are recruited for the position, fast but able to run stop and play coverage. The angle here is to keep every thing in front of them. Its prone to being beat over the top. Basic, but does well when its firing on all cylinders. LB's cover the gaps on run plays. Safeties take care of outside containment. Just couldn't do it against Miami. And our secondary is really young. Front 7 are stout. Hope that help Dr. Z.

  13. That was an exciting season for more reasons than being the best record in our I-A history. It was also our first season in the MAC, after playing about 5 seasons as an Independent, so there was a prize to play for. But most memorable for me was that Toledo Acme/Zip game where Daron Alcorn kicked the 56 yard field goal to end it. Still to this day, that might be the best Steve French radio call of all time. That's interesting that the OOC games were at the back end of the schedule.

  14. Legends Bar and grill is pretty good. It's only a mile of so up the road in Green. Smoke the Burger Joint is real good too. If you like Mexican food, Nuevo Acapulco has great Margaritas and food. If you want more upscale you can't go wrong with the Twisted Olive . Finally, if you are a whiskey connoisseur, you will really like Whiskey Ranch. They have over 150 brands of whiskey in stock. All of the places are just a few minutes drive from where you are staying.

  15. Don't know how many have seen this but it's a little crazy. Eastern kicked off from Charlotte's 20 yard line due to multiple personal fouls. Of course EMU tried an onside kick.

  16. If we want to talk about actually increasing parity, drop the scholarship number to 75-80 instead of 85. In the current state a team like OSU is able to hoard guys on their 3rd string that would be starters for most other teams. Ball last season finished behind Zeke, Miller, Samuel, and Dunn in carries and now he is the Zips featured back. Had OSU only had 77 or so scholarships to begin with they might not have offered him in the 1st place and he would have ended up at MSU or someplace similar. This would trickle other current P5 players down to MAC and other G5 schools. I'm counting 64 P5 schools x 8 scholarships = 512 players

  17. Did you guys notice that the right guard is looking back into the back field just like a center in some of these pics. I'm guessing this is to get the signal as to if he is pulling and to what side. Did anyone see this in the Miami game?

  19. ABJ game story (staff report ) http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/university-of-akron-football-composed-zips-rally-to-dominate-marshall-65-38-1.712506 "UA quarterback Thomas Woodson led the onslaught, completing 21-of-32 passes for 379 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions." That equates to a Quarterback Rating of 206.36!!!

  20. If this were the Zips basketball team, the App State game would be the one where fans get all excited, buy in to the team 100%...and then Lucy yanks the ball away. Without placing any undue significance on game #3 of a 12 game regular season...App State is a big one for the Zips Program and Joe Akron. Can the Zips pull through? A win gets the bandwagon in high gear. A loss... and it's "the same ol' Zips."

  21. Best Zips win in a long, long time. Very much more impressive than the Pitt win, if you ask me. Going to bed tonight as a very happy Zips fan. For those of you that want to take pot shots at the "naysayers". . . Give me a break. No one ever came on this board to do anything but give their take. If speaking out when coaching has been bad (and it happens at every level) is a sin, I guess I'm going to Hell. Sports used to be one of the last places where men could be men and not have to worry about the pc police scrutinizing every comment. Every poster who has ever been labeled as a naysayer, Debbie Downer, or a Drano Chugger has been a true blue fan of the Zips. We've lost enough to spread out over a few generations. I want to win, goddamn it and I will not be ashamed for speaking my true feelings and baring my soul on this board. That being said, I will apologize for personal attacks that came from my keyboard. Perhaps, because I never posted behind an anonymous screen name, I felt justified in saying whatever I damn well pleased. I will take my lumps for that and own up to it. Will you please forgive me? It has become patently obvious lately that I have fallen behind the times and I do not have the wherewithal to conduct myself with the proper netiquette required to stay in the good graces of an internet community. I am a dinosaur. Farewell, Zipsnation. I am going back underground as a lurker. I will be around in real life and I hope to see some of you real soon. I can't post any more because I can't have my fandom questioned. I love all things Akron. Forever. I bask in her glories and curse her defeats. I am Akron. Y'all take care & GO ZIPS!
