I think some may be taking joy in Akron's losses and that is much weirder5 points

Idk.... I doubt any OU fans are wishing Groce success here. It's not like he left us for a clearly better job a la Fleck to Minnesota, Groce to IL, etc., etc. He is still the competition..whether it be for current players (the ones he took), future players (we've already recruited against him multiple times), fans (seems like some people were more KD fans than Zips fans), and even on the court (if he ever has the cojones to schedule us). Not saying you, but its interesting to me that there are people who are the biggest OSU haters on the site and claim that they are our competition, yet are seemingly rooting for KD at Duquesne. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. It is a bit agitating to see this board praising a coach who Akron wasn't good enough for. Its very easy to argue he took a step down while taking a slight pay raise. And yes, I certainly appreciated what he did he and wish he didn't leave before anyone tries to say otherwise.3 points

I catch myself sometimes wondering how KD would do with this team. I then realize he would do very poorly given the difficulty of coaching two division 1 basketball teams at the same time.3 points

I am EXCITED! I have seen Biros play for years, and have also caught Tojaga play in four different matches. I am very impressed with both, and like Biro's' style. Jared nailed it in his description of Colin on GoZips.com. He will be a good fit wherever, andis a great 'tweener. And two Portugese??? Two Joaos would be great, but if we got a half a Joao from each that would equal one Joao (I love to say Joao!!!)2 points

Some of you taking joy in Duquesne losses is one of the weirder subplots of the 17-18 season.2 points

To think after all the crap that's happened, we're one 2OT game at BSU and a buzzer beater at Toledo from having a bye.2 points

Would using the word "left" instead of "abandoned" make you feel that much better? Sheesh.2 points

Come on. This year was bound to be a struggle. Next year, we'll get a chance to evaluate Groce and what he can bring far better. The same with Keith at Duquesn.2 points

When Keith took over, he had Romeo, DJ III and Jerimiah Wood... three of the best Zips in recent memory. Groce got, basically, a bucket of spit with one all-MAC calibre player. Huge, huge difference. Keith is my friend since junior high. Loved him here. Happy for him for his payday. Wish him well. But Groce is handling a situation that Keith never faced at Akron.2 points

I'm excited, too. These 10 players + the 3 players that joined for Spring 2018 + ??? (remember Joao joined in the fall with no prior announcement) [I like saying Joao, too] GO ZIPS!!!1 point

For the entire time KD spent at Akron, I don't remember any ZN member calling KD "classless." I don't know the incident that the fan is referring to, but I would be surprised if KD exhibited behavior that called for that.1 point

I've rooted for Bob Huggins ever since he left here to go to Cincinnati, even though our program tanked after his departure, and he took Buford with him. In one sense, I think I knew that I could always point to his beginnings at Akron to everyone I encounter who's a college basketball fan, once he was successful at a higher level. And I still do that to this day. But more importantly, I simply have rooted for him to do well as my "thank you" for everything he did for Akron, and all of the joy I got to be a part of during my student days.1 point

FWIW We're 5th right now in the MAC in attendance behind Ohio, Toledo, Ball State, and Buffalo. We have Ball State, Miami, and Kent left at home.1 point

Take the chip off your shoulder. Abandoned, left, skipped, skedaddled, vamoosed... it's all the same to me.1 point

Oh stop. There were worse crowds during Dambrot's cupcake OOC schedule; actually I remember some similar attendance numbers during conference play under Dambrot when some garbage MAC West teams would come in. Half the issue is the MAC isn't interesting. Of course MAC-play attendance might be down a bit this year, but we've had some solid crowds for how decimated this team. It's up to Groce & co. to win games worth a damn in future seasons to build interest back up. My "filled in decently well" comment was in reference to what the place looked like 10+ minutes before tip, which was a ghost town.1 point

What an informative article, thanks. • Alce chose Akron over eight other Division I teams, including the likes of Miami, Wisconsin, USF and Pittsburgh. • While several schools wanted Alce as a linebacker, Akron pursued him to play running back. • Abraham Alce and Shedro Louis have been known as Thunder and Lightning. Akron was the only DI school to offer Louis. • Alce pulled a fast one on the crowd, revealing a Miami hat....quickly tossed the Canes hat into the crowd and said "I’m taking my talents to the University of Akron" • Zips running backs coach Eric Hickson visited Alce last March....A native of Fort Lauderdale, Hickson recruits South Florida with vigor every year. • Louis (Wide receiver/defensive back) has impacted on offense, defense and special teams....led a deep, talented receiving corps with 614 yards and 11 touchdowns. Louis tended to bring his best in big games1 point

I'd think we could elaborate further than two games (both of which went to OT) when it comes to discussing the merits of each coach, but sure. Again, I'm not saying Groce isn't a good coach or that Dambrot is the greatest of all-time. But as skip-zip pointed out, Dambrot always did more with less. There were so many times I expected a huge dropoff, only to find myself at The Q on Saturday night cheering for the Zips in another title game. I'm confident Groce will have a much better year here next season, and strongly believe he'll get us a NCAA Tournament win before moving on. I base this on my opinion that he is an elite recruiter, which I do not think KD is. But if I'm giving both coaches the same roster of players to work with in this hypothetical situation, yeah, KD's going to squeeze more wins out of the group every single time.1 point

Along with laziness. His defense is always, "Hey, I do what my employer asks of me and nothing more." My father was an employee of the ABJ back in the day. During the blizzard of '78, he and several co-workers tried to WALK to work to make sure the paper got out. Now proofreading your own copy is too much to ask. BTW, my dad only made it to Highland Square before he realized his folly. The owner of the Bucket Shop was cleaning up from the previous night, so pops had many beers before calling for us to pick him up. My mom told him to walk back home (3 miles).1 point
