  1. St. Peter's is us, but in the Elite 8. In your face defense (our D is better), methodical offense, and solid free throw shooting. Groce has the winning formula. Time to execute.

  2. Regarding free throws ... of the 5 guys Kansas has on the court late against Providence, 70% is the lowest FT % of any of those 5. A shot anyone at any level can practice all day long.

  4. Everything you've written is 100% true, and I would LOVE for John Groce to think the same way as you. It just never seems to work out that way. Dambrot was an "Akron Guy." Here for 13 years. He said a million times to Steve French - "I ain't going anywhere." And, he went somewhere. You can live pretty good in Summit County with a $650,000 salary, and a whopper of a nest egg courtesy of his Illinois stint. Low pressure...the media hardly pays attention and you're not beholden to any meddling old money alumni. Assuming his super sophs stick around through their full eligibility, he'll be favored to take the Zips to the NCAA tourney three straight seasons. Coaching them has to be more fun than leaving to pick up the pieces of some broken down P5 program that just fired their coach. We'll see how it plays out. Next season should be a blast, and we'll take it from there.

  5. Akron lead their game against UCLA most of the game. UCLA managed to slide thru. Tonight UCLA lead their game against North Carolina most of the way. Tar heels pulled it out. OH well... enjoy that long flight back to L.A. Bruins!!!!

  6. Wasn't quite sure where to put this, but congrats to Western Michigan who won their very first NCAA hockey tournament game on a fantastic wrap around overtime goal. I tend to root for other Mac teams in tournaments especially in sports we do not play. 😊

  7. The topic of Groce leaving interests me because he is really at a "precipice of a great crossroads" (one of Carmine Jr's many malapropisms from The Sopranos). First, I'll say this. He has made great money as a basketball coach. Kind of money over his time as a head coach and assistant at OSU that put him in the top 1% of incomes in the United States. As you get older, you start to think more and more about the end game (retirement). Groce is 50 and has from what I can tell is 12-13 years as a public employee in Ohio. Roughly 7-8 more years would put him at 20 and probably set up for a comfortable retirement on whatever retirement system Ohio has set up for public employees plus his investments. He might have one more run at a big time job, but he is getting closer to the point where that is probably unlikely. Akron could be a great place for him to ride out those last few years of years in the Ohio retirement system. He has a winning program and is in a pretty safe position at Akron. I wouldn't be in a hurry to go anywhere else. Heck, 8 more years at Akron, retire a legend and consult for a few years. Consulting or part time work is great for early retirement if all you are looking for is some extra scratch and health insurance. You don't want to pay for health insurance out of your investment principal if you want to go into early/semi-retirement. Not a bad life plan if you ask me.

  8. The next thing you're going to tell me is the "Craig J. Ehlo" that's compiling for Kent State football articles isn't really the former NBA player. What's Dre doing photographing and posting 6 year old articles?

  9. That's a different Mark Price and I think that timeline was in conjunction with a 2014 article he wrote about the Acme Zip game, a year before the Potato Bowl. Mark writes a weekly Akron history article for the Beacon, one of the few things worth reading in the Beacon.

  10. I know this is hard to comprehend, but I loved the Rubber Bowl. When it got new turf and a facelift plus new benches it was an impressive place. The Zips had enough good games there whereby you were always hoping they could do it again. My memories are also impacted because my dad and I would go to most of the games. He loved to see the Zips play and enjoyed every minute there. I miss him, the bowl and good Zip football.

  11. Buffalo is looking for a new head coach after Felisha Legette-Jack is taking the Syracuse head coaching job (her alma mater). I wonder how many of their returners (including Fair, Woolley, others) follow her to Syracuse or transfer elsewhere. https://twitter.com/CuseWBB/status/1507794519080636421

  12. Interesting article liked by Charles Guthrie on LinkedIn. This is smart business. I'm surprised to see the MAC at the forefront of this. The revenue should only grow as more and more states legalize sports betting. Sports betting and media deals - that's where the money is in sports. Whatever we do to capitalize on that should greatly improve our financial situation. Look at Pat McAfee's FanDuel deal if you need an example of the kind of money being thrown around in the sports betting world.
